Cycling's 50 Craziest Stories

Milano - San Remo (Historic), Italy. 298 km.

Podium history of Milano - San Remo | 2011 edition | 2009 edition

The race: Thick, wet fog covered the roads in the beginning kilometers, but that didn't keep an early break of three riders from gaining over 20 minutes early in the race. After the race reached the seacoast the break was caught, mostly through the efforts of Lampre, Columbia, Quick Step and Liquigas. The attacks started on the Cipressa (see route map below the results and race photos) but they were all called back. The damage was done, however. Only about 30 riders survived the high speed of the Cipressa ascent. 2009 winner Mark Cavendish was among the casualties.

On the Poggio, Vincenzo Nibali got a small gap, but the sprinters were not going to be denied.

Liquigas, looking for a win from an on-form Daniele Bennati started the sprint, but when Oscar Freire hit the front, the race was over. Freire was just much, much faster than anyone else. Look at that photo below and you can see the gap he got. Wonder what Boonen (in black/yellow/red) is saying?
