The race:
The 1945 Paris-Roubaix was 246 km long and raced at an average speed of 31.20 km/hr.
There were 100 starters and 28 finishers.
This was the first edition of Paris-Roubaix since the Germans had been driven from France.
Of the seven men in the lead who raced together into the Roubaix velodrome, 1944 winner De Simpelaere was the favorite. In fact, De Simpelaere had been marking and neutralizing attacks for most of the race.
To the surprise of most, Paul Maye, a Basque from Bayonne, was the winner.
Despite his winning two Tour de France stages, Paris-Tours three times as well as Paris-Roubaix, there are very few pictures of Paul Maye available. Here he is on a cover of the July 7, 1938 Le Miroir des Sports.
