The Race: Stage 7's relentlessly hilly profile was perfect for breaks. With 25 km to go Adam Hansen and Emanuele Sella were two minutes ahead of the Pink Jersey group with several riders in between. The rain-slickened roads were a constant menace and riders were falling in the corners.
On the Santa Maria de Criptis ascent Danilo Di Luca exploded off the maglia rosa group but he was quickly marked by Nibali and Scarponi, shutting down the move. Meanwhile, with 15 km to go Adam Hansen was now alone continuing his break with a two-minute lead.
On a descent before the San Silvestro Nibali tried to use his spectacular descending skills to open a gap, but crashed and slid for quite a way. He was up and chasing almost immediately. Wiggins, who had been looking uncomfortable for a lot of the day, fell on the San Silvestro descent and never joined the front group. Lots of riders fell on the dangerous road. Hansen, who had been away since km 30, rode the descent very carefully and arrived at the bottom safely and drove for home. It was a hard, brutal, difficult and dangerous day.
