Stage 11, Wednesday, May 15: Tarvisio (Cave del Predil) - Vajont 1963/2012 (Erto e Casso), 182 km

Stage 11 finish

The Race: The peloton (with Ryder Hesjedal, whose start today was doubtful) remained together for about 100 km when a big break moved away and quickly forged a five-minute lead. From that group Patrick Gretsch rode away on the Forcella Ciampigotto. Astana rode tempo at the front of the bunch for most of the stage, not too worried abut the 20-odd riders off the front.

With 26 km to go Gretsch had a 1min 20second lead over his former breakaways and 6min on the maglia rosa group. Daniel Oss and Ramunas Navadauskas left the break and quickly caught Gretsch. With 16 km to go it was Oss, Navardauskas and Gretsch chased by about 17 riders about 1min 20sec back and the main peloton led by Astana still six minutes behind.

Gretsch was clearly suffering as he tried to stay with his new break companions and at 11.5 km to go, as the road began to rise, he was shelled.

At the start of the Vajont ascent the lead pair had 2min 12sec on the break and were 6min 35sec ahead of the Pink Jersey group. Navadauskas did a couple of probing attacks and dropped Oss as he rode under the 5 km banner.

Navardauskas was not to be stopped, as he took a beautiful solo win. Astana was comfortable merely containing any threats.
