The Race: Another wet and miserable day. Because of the dangerous conditions, the race jury decided to take the GC time 3 km before the finish.
By the time the stage was 10 km old, the day's break was gone. With 53 km to go the five men (Fabio Felline, Maurits Lammertink, Marco Marcato, Bert de Backer, Maxim Belkov) had a 2min 23sec lead.
With 17 km to go the five riders still had 1min 24sec but Bradley Wiggins was suffering with his cold and was off the back of the maglia rosa group, at least 30 seconds behind the pack. At first it looked like Sky had given up on Wiggins. He had no domestiques to pace him back to the pack.
Later Sky rider Christian Knees dropped back to help Wiggo, but the pack was moving far too fast at this point for the ill rider to regain contact. More Sky riders did drop back to help Wiggins. At 9 km to go the five-man break had 28 seconds, but the Wiggins group was two and a half minutes behind Nibali. Sky's "Plan B" rider Rigoberto Uran was with the Nibali group.
At the 5 km to go point Omega Pharma-Quick Step with help from Cannondale got serious about catching the break and setting things up for Cavendish.
The break was caught in the final kilometer and Mark Cavendish was easily the day's quickest rider. That should be Cavendish's 100th professional victory. Wiggins finished more than three minutes behind the main field.
