Stage 14, Saturday, May 18: Cervere - Bardonecchia, 168 181 km
Rated Ascents:
Km 125.3: Sestriere (2,035 km), max 9% gradient, Category 2- Km 168: Bardonecchia (1,908m), 9% average gradient for the final 7.2 km, 14% max. Final 3 km average 9.7%. Category 1
The Race: Stage 14's much anticipated climb to Sestriere was cancelled because of snow. Race director Mauro Vegna announced that the day's grand finale, the climb to Bardonecchia would remain. The new route took a different road from Pinerolo to Oulx, going along the Val di Susa and bypassing Sestriere. It rejoined the planned route at Oulx. This lengthened the stage by 13km, making it 181km.
Bad weather has plagued this year's Giro, and tomorrow's Stage 15 climbs of Mt. Cenis and the Galibier have also been removed.
So far 25 riders have retired from this year's Giro.
On the Bardonecchia this morning it is cold (7-12C) and sleeting and the riders were hit with heavy rain as the stage started. That didn't stop four riders (Sonny Colbrelli, Luca Paolini, Matteo Trentin and Daniele Pietropolli) from rolling away from the pack. The lead grew to almost ten minutes but with 45 km to go the pack started to eat into the gap. For most of the race the television relay helicopters were grounded so no live television transmission was available.
With 30 km remaining the gap was 6min 50sec and at the 15 km mark the lead was down to 5min with Trentin unable to stay with the other three.
With a kilometer and a half to go, the leaders' gap was down to just 43 seconds.
Out of the fog near the finish a surprise, Vincenzo Nibali and Mauro Santambrogio had dropped everyone and caught the break. Santambrogio got the stage (Nibali didn't contest the sprint) and Nibali cemented his hold on the lead.
