Stage 17, Wednesday, May 22: Caravaggio - Vicenza, 214 km
Rated ascent:
- Km 197.9: Crosara (402m), 5.3 km, 7% average gradient, Category 4
The Race: Sunny skies. Before the stage was ten kilometers old, four riders went clear: Miguel Angel Rubiano, Luke Durbridge, Gert Dockx and Mexim Belkov. Omega Pharma saw this stage as another chance for a Cavendish stage win and slowly brought down a gap that had grown to five minutes. With 33 km to go the quartet had 1min 13sec.
Approaching the final climb Vini Fantini set a white-hot pace, lining out the peloton. The break (now minus Belkov) had a minute at the start of the Crosara (21km to go). Cavendish started the ascent near the front of the pack.
Surprising no one, Vini Fantini launched Danilo Di Luca and Alessando Proni. Proni went deep and then croaked, but Di Luca pressed on while Lamp re led the field up the climb. Cavendish turned himself inside out trying to stay with the leaders, but was gapped halfway up the Crosara.
Near the top Di Luca Caught the now solo Rubiano with Giovanni Visconti chasing and catching the duo. Under Visconti's powerful impetus Di Luca was dropped while Rubiano hung on for dear life.
Bam, Visconti attacked hard and dropped Rubiano. Over the top Visconti had 32 seconds on the Lampre/Astana led maglia rosa group. Visconti had 16 kilomoters to go. Omega Pharma put four men to work dragging Cavendish back up to the front group, but they had a one-minute gap to close.
Visconti descended like his hair was on fire, chased by a highly motivated peloton. At 10 km to go, with most of the technical sections of the descent completed Visconti had 32 seconds. The Cavendish group was still a minute behind the Nibali group, now only about 25 riders.
6 km to go, 22 seconds lead with attacks going off as the steam and organization of the chase seemed to go away..
4 km to go, Visconti continued to look good as his gap grew to 24 seconds.
The chasers could not get organized and Visconti cruised across the line for his second Giro stage win this year and Movistar's third in a row.

Ramunas Navardauskas wins the field sprint, surely unaware that Visconti is already drinking a coke.
Mark Cavendish couldn'y get over the hill with the leaders and fnished 49th
I'm sure Visconti would like to make a habit of this.
