Pascal Ackermann wins a wet stage in the Giro. Sirotti photo
Weather at the finish city of Terracina at 1:50 PM, local time: 13C (55F) and raining. Wind is from the east at 16 km/hr (10 mph).
The race: Tom Dumoulin started the stage, though he had crashed the day before. The knee pain from Tuesday's fall turned out to be too much and the Sunweb rider abandoned shortly after the stage started.
Here's the race summary from stage winner Pascal Ackermann's Bora-hansgrohe team.
The fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia, which stretched from Fascati to Terracina, offered a chance for the sprinters to come to the fore. The 140 km-long route contained two small ascents at the beginning, before it continued over relatively flat terrain and a category 4 climb into the finish town on the Tyrrhenian coast.
The finale was contested on a 9.5m long circuit before the riders reached the 1.5km long flat finishing stretch in the harbour townlet. The weather was not kind to the riders as rain and wet roads demanded the utmost attention from the field on today's stage. A 6-rider breakaway which formed right after the drop of the flag tried its luck in an escape but the group could not carve out more than a couple of minutes advantage.
At the first intermediate sprint, BORA – hansgrohe came to the front with some other teams and Pascal Ackermann, currently leading the points classification, collected additional bonus points. At the end of the first half of the race, the jury decided that due to the inclement weather, times would be taken at the first passage of the finish line in Terracina. However, points and time bonuses would still be awarded at the stage finish.
With 50 km, to go the breakaway split and a soloist escaped on the front until just over 20km to the finish when he was caught by the chasing peloton. And then with 7 km remaining, BORA-hansgrohe moved up to the front, to position Pascal Ackermann for the final sprint. But wet and slippery roads made the final finishing stretch dangerous to manoeuvre.
During the last two kilometres Michael Schwarzmann increased the tempo while other sprinter teams moved up to the front. When Fernando Gaviria launched his sprint, Pascal followed his wheel and was able to overtake him on the line, netting his second stage victory at the Giro d'Italia. With that, he also extended his lead in the points classification. His teammate Rafal Majka remains in 6th position in the GC while BORA-hansgrohe also leads the team classification after today's stage.
Here is the organizer's stage 5 summary:
The German rider Pascal Ackermann (Bora – Hansgrohe) won Stage 5 of the 102nd Giro d’Italia, 140km from Frascati to Terracina. Fernando Gaviria Rendon (UAE Team Emirates) and Arnaud Demare (Groupama – FDJ) finished second and third, respectively.
Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo – Visma) retains the Maglia Rosa of leader of the General Classification.
Given the weather conditions, the race organisation, in agreement with the jury of commissaries, decided that final times were taken on the first passage of the finish line in Terracina. Points and time bonuses were awarded at the stage finish.
JERSEYS:
- Maglia Rosa (pink), general classification leader, sponsored by Enel – Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo – Visma)
- Maglia Ciclamino (cyclamen), sprinter classification leader, sponsored by Segafredo – Pascal Ackermann (Bora – Hansgrohe)
- Maglia Azzurra (blue), King of the Mountains classification leader, sponsored by Banca Mediolanum – Giulio Ciccone (Trek – Segafredo)
- Maglia Bianca (white), young rider general classification leader, sponsored by Eurospin – Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Pro Team)
Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Pascal Ackermann said: “It was a two-time sprint today. I had to brake at 250 metres to go but luckily Gaviria became the perfect lead out man for me. I had a lot of power in the end. I’m just happy about today. It was scary all day under the rain. I was happy to get the cyclamen jersey back yesterday. I hope to continue winning in these colours.”
