Weather at the finish city of Visegrád at 1:50 PM, local time: 22C (71F), cloudy, with the wind from the east at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 4% chance of rain durng the afternoon.

Info about route: The route runs completely flat route across the Hungarian lowlands, only to rise in the final 5 kilometers. The stage starts in Budapest, on wide, straight and well-paved city roads. From km 9 to km 14, the route travels on the M6 motorway. There are a few urban areas along the route, with roundabouts, speed bumps, traffic islands, guide posts, and the like being the common impediments here. There are no major undulations or sharp corners. Past Esztergom, the route rolls along the Danube up to the foot of the closing climb in Visegrád.

Final kilometers
The final 5 km are entirely uphill. Past the Danube, the route runs through a valley until 3.8 km to go. From here on, the course makes for the castle, with gradients around 5%, nearing 8% for a short stretch, and with a few hairpins. The home straight is on tarmac road.

The race: After a 12.4 km rollout, the 2022 Giro's first stage was given its official start at 12:35 PM.

Here's the report from Wilco Kelderman's Bora-hansgrohe team:

In Budapest the first Grand Tour of the season kicked off today. A fairly flat stage with a 5km uphill drag towards the finish gave punchers, but also sprinters a possible chance to grab the first Pink Jersey of the race.

As the bunch took it quite easy in the beginning, two riders formed today’s break, but have been never a serious threat to the main contenders. After the break was caught the expected fight for positions before the final climb started. Fortunately, all BORA – hansgrohe boys stayed out of trouble due to the work of Cesare and Patrick.

With just over 2km to go Lennard launched an impressive attack and the bunch had to dig deep to bring him back. Right at that moment Wilco made another move and was leading until the home straight to take a strong fifth place in the end. More than a good start for BORA – hansgrohe at this year’s Giro.

“Actually, I was caught up behind that crash at the bottom of the climb. I had to dig deep to get back in position and I hit the front just after Lenni was caught. I wanted to carry the momentum even I knew it was quite early. I think we can be really happy with today.” – Wilco Kelderman

“We didn’t plan to attack in the final, but when I had a good position, and the pace went down a little I thought it’s a good moment to give it a try. In the end it was longer than I thought to the line, and I blew up. But sensations have been really good, so I can be happy.” – Lennard Kämna

“Big congrats to the whole team. Everybody did a perfect job and how they presented themselves in the final is really promising. After those setbacks in the last weeks this is more than we hoped for, and I believe we can take some confidence from this first stage.” – Jens Zemke, sports director
