Weather at the finish city of Torino at 1:15 PM, local time: 18C (66F), fair, with the wind from the southeast at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The stage: Stage 1 kicks off in the suburbs of Turin and finishes in the center. After a flat initial phase of around 45 km, the riders will tackle three climbs. The first KOM points are up for grabs on the Berzano di San Pietro, followed about 30 km later by the climb of Superga from the Baldissero Torinese side, which has less arduous gradients than the better known Turin side. The last climb of the day is the Colle della Maddalena, 6 km long and with an average gradient of 7.4%. This summit is located at 30 km from the finish line in Turin, half of which is downhill. 5 kilometers after the sprint for time bonuses in Moncalieri, the San Vito is tackled again. The last challenge is a descent with some tricky twists and turns.

Last kilometers
The last 5 km are characterized by the short, steep climb to San Vito (1.4 km with an average gradient of 9.8% and a maximum of 16%), which ends at 3 km to go. The fast descent leads to about 600 m from the finish. The last 500 m are straight and perfectly flat on an 8mm wide asphalt road.

The race: Here's the report from winner Jhonatan Narvaez's Team INEOS Grenadiers.

Jhonatan Narvaez pulled off an inch-perfect ride to claim victory on stage one of the Giro d'Italia and pull on the famous pink jersey.

The Ecuadorian unleashed one of the most impressive performances of his career, following the acceleration of Tadej Pogacar on the final climb, before timing his sprint to perfection in Turin.

Victory saw Narvaez move into pink on a day that also saw Geraint Thomas get his Giro off to a strong start. The Welshman was alert to moves late on, crossing the line in 10th place in a stage which saw the peloton vastly reduced.

Bonus seconds see Narvaez lead the race over Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) by three and six seconds respectively. Thomas sits at 20 seconds, after crossing the line alongside team-mate Filippo Ganna.
