Weather at the finish city of Fossano at 1:40 PM, local time: 17C (63F), rain showers, with the wind from the northwest at 11 km/hr (7 mph). The rain is forecst to end about 4:00 PM.

The stage: Predominantly flat stage with some minor ups and downs in the central part. Mostly flat, straight, normal-width roads dotted with standard city obstacles in urban areas. The short climb of Lu is perhaps the only asperity of the day. The finale is characterized by the short climb of Cherasco.

Last kilometers
The last 3 km are virtually straight with only one sharp bend at 1300 m to go. Perfectly flat profile except for the false flat section from -4.5 km to -3 km, which climbs steadily at around 5% with wide bends. Final straight of 1300 m on a 9 m wide asphalt road.

The race: Eddie Dunbay (Jayco AlUla), who crashed yesterday, did not start. Late in the race Simon Carr (EF Education-EasyPost), suffering from knee problems, abandoned.

Here's the race organizer's short report:

Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) has won Stage 3 of the 107th Giro d’Italia, the 166km long Novara-Fossano. Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) and Biniam Girmay (Intermarché – Wanty) finished second and third respectively.

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) retains the Maglia Rosa.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Tim Merlier said: “This is my hardest victory so far. It was a really hard final. It’s been very difficult to come across to Pogačar and Thomas. I was in a difficult situation in the last hill. But Julian Alaphilippe was there for me. The team helped me tremendously. I was in the sprinters’ breakaway earlier. Luke [Lamperti] was there as well but it wasn’t good for us, so I tried to slow the group down a bit so we could have a bunch sprint finish”.

Here's the report from GC second-place Geraint Thomas' Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Geraint Thomas continued his strong start to the Giro d'Italia with a daring late attack alongside the maglia rosa on stage three.

The Welshman was superbly supported by his INEOS Grenadiers team-mates on the run into Fossano, and found himself in the perfect position to follow a surprising late acceleration.

Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) jumped on the move of Mikkel Honore (EF Education-Easypost), with Thomas able to ride across the gap over the final short rise of the stage with three kilometres to go. On the run-in Thomas was able to follow Pogacar as the pair opened out a gap to the sprint trains behind.

Here's the peloton about 58 kilometers into the stage on the Lu climb.

Despite a valiant effort the duo were reeled in on the final straight.

Earlier Thomas had taken a single bonus second at the intermediate sprint, finishing just behind Pogacar. Team-mate Ben Swift made the decisive early acceleration to take the three seconds.

The team combined superbly in the final 40km, holding position well on the left-hand side of the road, with big turns from Connor Swift, Ben Swift and Tobias Foss, before Thymen Arensman stretched out the bunch to deliver Thomas to the 3km to go banner.

In Cherasco, 23 kilometers from the finish.

No one expected what happened next, but by the finish the sprint took hold, with Tim Merlier (Soudal - Quick-Step) winning out.

Overall Thomas retained second overall, sitting 46 seconds back on Pogacar.

Tim Merlier wins stage three.
