Weather at the finish city of Andora at 2:00 PM, local time: 19C (66F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 13% chance of rain. The peloton did get rained on early in the stage.

The stage: A fairly flat stage, the only obstacles are the Col di Melogno climb (8 km at around 5%) midway through the stage and the final Capo Mele, which is tackled from the same side as during the Milano-Sanremo. The finishing venue lies at the foot of Capo Mele and is approached along the well-known route of La Classicissima.

Last kilometers
The last 3 km are mostly downhill. Once past Capo Mele, the road descends in a series of semi-curves to the town of Andora. The last 800 m are straight and perfectly flat on an 8 m wide asphalt road.

Before the start. The category leaders know exactly where to wait.

The race: Bram Welten (Team dsm-firmenich PostlNL) came down with a fever and cough and did not start the stage. Early in the stage Torstein Traeen (Bahrain Victorious), who crashed in stage one, abandoned.

Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) crashed twice and had to quit the race.

The race organizer posted this short report:

Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) has won Stage 4 of the 107th Giro d’Italia, the 190km long Acqui Terme-Andora. Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) finished second and third respectively.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Jonathan Milan said: “I’m full of emotion again, like one year ago when I took my first Giro d’Italia win because my team has done such an amazing job and my family is here to see me. Our team-mate from the Italian track team Filippo Ganna made it hard for us but the work Simone Consonni did in the last 900 metres leaves me speechless”.

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) retains the Maglia Rosa.

Here's the race report from winner Jonathan Milan's Team Lidl-Trek:

Exactly one year after his first Giro d’Italia stage victory, Jonathan Milan repeated the feat, but this time proudly representing the Lidl-Trek colors.

Having come agonizingly close to victory yesterday, Milan was hungry to go one better on Stage 4. Lidl-Trek assumed responsibility to control the stage, with Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier doing an exceptional job for his team, mile after mile at the head of the peloton. The tension increased as the route snaked along the iconic Ligurian coast, familiar for viewers of Milan – Sanremo, before an explosion of action on Capo Mele.

Filippo Ganna (Ineos), a compatriot and teammate of Milan from the Italian track squad, attacked on the small climb, which lead to a flurry of counters. All were hoovered up quickly by the infernal pace, except Ganna, whose time trialling prowess was on full display. Fortunately, Lidl-Trek had the absolute commitment of the whole team prepared to empty themselves for the singular goal of setting up Milan for the sprint.

Ganna was caught 700 meters from the line by Simone Consonni, as he expertly piloted Milan into position before pulling to the side. From there, it was all down to the Italian powerhouse, who launched his recognizable sprint alongside Olav Kooij (Visma).

Milan edged ahead, stamping on the pedals and pulling on the handlebars with every bit of strength available to him. Despite the royal cast of sprinters vying for the win, no-one could catch him.

The riders on the day's only categorized KOM climb, the Colle del Melogno (3rd category).

Jonny’s Reaction:
"There are so many emotions now. I said from the beginning that we came here with one goal, for everyone. So, today, the guys did an amazing job, it’s such an amazing sensation to win again here in the Giro d’Italia. I really have to say thanks always to my teammates, they first believed in this day. Also, today is really special because my parents are here. I’m really happy about it, it’s just an amazing sensation! I also want to say thanks to the people watching me from home that were really close to me in this period. Thanks to everyone.”

“We saw Ganna going full gas in the last climb, we caught him with 900 meters to go. It was not full panic [when he attacked] but, I was a bit scared, I have to say. He is able to do four nice minutes of power so he also helped us in a way, let’s say. In any case, my guys really kept it under control then, Simo [Consonni] did a fantastic lead out and I just had to play my cards.

"It’s always special with a team victory like this. We have many emotions now in this moment. Yesterday, the victory was very close. Today, we made it together. We were really looking for this, we deserve this, and we came here for this. This is a real team victory, so I always have to give a huge thanks to my teammates and of course to all the staff who are making so much effort for us and still have to do it for many other days. This is for all of them.

"As I took the jersey last year, I will follow my plan, stage by stage and we will try our best. It means a lot to all of us, coming here with the goal to win and then to do it, it’s always something super nice. To have a plan, follow it. It means a lot to all of us for the effort we made this year, so I’m really happy about this. I saw the video, I will watch it again on the way to the hotel."

Late in the stage peloton speeds down the Ligurian seacoast.
