Weather at the finish city of Lucca at 1:40 PM, local time: 22C (72F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 8 km/hr (5 mph). There is a 5% chance of rain.

The stage: The riders leave the city of Genova and travel along the coast on the Aurelia state road in the first 50 km. The stage has just two climbs on the menu. The first is the third category Passo del Bracco which comes after 62km of racing and the second is the fourth category Montemagno climb which the peloton summits just under 20km from the finish line of Lucca.

Last kilometers
The last flat kilometers consist of a series of straights linked by a few wide half-bends. Of note is a single right-angle bend 2.5 km from the finish. Final straight of 350 m on an 8 m wide asphalt road.

The race: Here is the race organizer's report:

There is always a second chance. All it takes is the awareness of mind to take it, and that’s exactly what Benjamin Thomas managed to do today. Back in 2022, in the Carcassonne stage of the Tour de France, he was caught by the sprinting peloton with less than 500 metres to go, seeing his dream of winning a stage in his home race crushed.

Less than two years later, here comes a fresh chance in a Grand Tour, not the home one in the strict sense of the word, but that of his adopted home, since he lives in Brescia with his fiancée Martina Alzini, herself a Cofidis athlete. Compared to two years ago, being in a group made the big difference, as on the way to Lucca he was joined Michael Valgren (EF Education-EasyPost), Andrea Pietrobon (Team Polti Kometa) and Enzo Paleni (Groupama-FDJ), with whom he shared the hard work and managed to contain the peloton’s comeback.

Early in the stage. For 50 kilometers the peloton rode down the coast of the Ligurian sea.

Of the trio of stages that were supposed to end in a bunch sprint, today’s seemed the most certain, but that was not the case, confirming the unpredictability of this Giro. Alpecin-Deceuninck made their move on the Passo del Bracco, setting a strong pace to try and challenge the rival sprinters, which they managed, given that riders such as Merlier, Ewan and Gaviria were initially dropped. The problem was that, once the climb was over, Kaden Grove’s team caught up with the early breakaway with 100km to go, just to run out of fuel half-way through the stage, allowing Jakobsen, Merlier and Ewan to rejoin the peloton.

In May, even the trains are pink in Italy.

And that’s when Thomas and the other three went clear, quickly gaining that 1’40’’ which would prove lethal for the sprinters’ teams. Just under the red kite marking the last kilometre, Pietrobon, who had cleverly spared himself by skipping a few changes, tried to outfox his fellow adventurers by going long but was caught and skipped cleanly in the last 100 metres. Victory went to Benjamin, a pistard with five world championship victories in Omnium, points race and Madison, and an Olympic bronze medal in Tokyo.

Speaking of the Olympics, the Olympic torch arrived in Paris today and Benjamin will be there in July. A sign of destiny, a Frenchman was supposed to win today.

Here's the report from third-place Andrea Pietrobon's Team Polti Kometa:

Fifth stage, fourth and fifth breakaways… and first podium for Team Polti Kometa in this Giro d’Italia!

After departing from Genoa, Mattia Bais escapes with three other riders and pedals with them for sixty kilometers, before being caught on the descent shortly after the Bracco pass. Upon entering Lunigiana, 75 km from the finish line, another quartet breaks away including Andrea Pietrobon, who had previously helped sprinter Lonardi on the climb. First, the 25-year-old from Belluno gifts Polti Kometa another lead at the Intergiro after Muñoz’s yesterday, and then together with his adventure companions he provides a thrilling emotion…

Having broken away with the course already in progress, these escapees are fresher compared to those who usually start in the morning, while nervousness about the chase spreads through the peloton. Result: the four leaders enter Lucca with enough margin to compete for victory. In the city of the great Puccini, pianist Pietrobon tries to play his symphony: he starts with the lights off before the final corner and creates a gap, being surpassed only by Thomas (Cofidis) and Valgren (EF) less than one hundred meters from the finish line. A 3rd place that constitutes a milestone in Andrea’s career and in the italian ProTeam’s Corsa Rosa.

“We are here to win and I tried to play cleverly to live a beautiful dream! – Pietrobon says – Given that the day before yesterday we were surprised by a big group of sprinters, today as soon as I saw the attack I shot to their wheel. We agreed and rode with the wind in our favor, although at -5km, when the team car told me on the radio that we could really make it, I almost had no more legs. But at the Giro you think a hundred times before giving up, and I held on until I couldn’t take turns anymore and I tried that action 900 meters from the finish line. At -500 I had very strong feelings because I realized I could make it, it’s a pity for the victory that slipped away in the end but I’m happy to have achieved the first important placement as a professional. On a stage like this, giving everything I had.”

“This morning my goal was to get into the breakaway – adds Mattia Bais – but after the KOM there was nothing to do, however there will be many other opportunities and now we enjoy a great result, already focusing on tomorrow’s stage with the gravel roads.”

Sports director Stefano Zanatta can only be proud: “Our guys couldn’t have played it better! We moved immediately again today, then Alpecin Deceuninck raced hard on the climb to put the other sprinters in difficulty and it quickly led to the catch-up. At that point, Andrea managed to break away with other excellent riders and worked very well, including the attempt in the last kilometer. The only sour note on a splendid day, the crash involving Davide Piganzoli and Giovanni Lonardi 35 kilometers from the finish.”
