Weather at the finish city of Rapolano Terme at 1:45 PM, local time: 23C (74F), sunny, with the wind from the north-northeast at 19 km/hr (12 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: There are three sections of gravel road in this stage totaling 11.6 kilometers.

The Giro organization writes:

A demanding stage characterized by a hilly second part and three gravel sectors totaling almost 12 km. The first two are shared with the Strade Bianche, the third is a new one. After a flat run-up in the Pisa hinterland as far as Volterra, the peloton will enter the Senese province and face the dirt section of Vidritta, which, compared to the Strade Bianche, is 2 km longer. The Bagnaia section follows just a few hundred meters later, featuring gradients of up to 15% as well as the second KOM of the day. Before Asciano, the Pievina is tackled. Very demanding finale with the wall of Serre di Rapolano.

Last kilometers
The last kms are complicated and feature tricky bends and ups and downs. Of note at about 5 km from the finish line is the Serre di Rapolano climb, with gradients of up to 20% in the finale. The final straight is a 450 m stretch on asphalt with a width of 6 m and a gradient of around 6%.

The race: The following riders did not start: Riley Pickrell, Michael Woods & Nadav Raisberg (all Israel-Premier Tech) & Florian Lipowitz (Bora-hansgrohe). Raisberg broke his hand and Woods & Pickrell suffered concussions after crashing yesterday.

It's a beautiful day for a bike race. The peloton gets rolling.

Here's the race organizer's stage six report:

Pelayo Sanchez (Movistar Team) has won Stage 6 of the 107th Giro d’Italia, the 180km long Torre del Lago Puccini (Viareggio)-Rapolano Terme. Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) and Luke Plapp (Team Jayco AlUla) finished second and third respectively.

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) retains the Maglia Rosa.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Pelayo Sanchez said: “I don’t realise what I’ve done. I’m speechless. Since the beginning of the year, the plan was that I’d save energy in the first stages for today. I had in mind to win the stage from a breakaway but to make was difficult. I knew during the race that it would be hard to stay away. I did my best to save energy for the very end. I tried to stay calm when everyone was attacking. I made my move. I tried to drop Plapp and Alaphilippe but it was impossible for me. So my only way to win was the sprint. I’ve always dreamed of riding Grand Tours. I did La Vuelta with Burgos-BH last year, now it’s my first Giro d’Italia. To win a stage here is just craziness”.

The Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar said: “For us, it was perfect if the breakaway stayed away because I didn’t want to spend too much energy on the gravel and in the hills. Even if Luke Plapp was to take the Maglia Rosa it would have been fine. For me it was a good stage and enjoyable to ride again on the roads of Strade Bianche. The crowds were great again. But I still prefer Strade Bianche. I had good legs today and I hope they’ll be good again for the time trial tomorrow. It’s an interesting parcours. I’m not thinking about winning. I just want to feel good on the bike”.

The stage got off to fast start, averaging 51.8 km/hr the first hour!

Here's the report from GC second-place Geraint Thomas' Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Jhonatan Narvaez sprinted to fifth in stage six of the Giro, after an assured performance from the Grenadiers.

The team bossed the three tricky ‘sterrato’ sectors that littered the final hour of racing. Ben and Connor Swift, along with Filippo Ganna, ensured the Grenadiers were well positioned into the first sector, with Ganna remaining on the front to keep Geraint out of trouble.

The peloton with Tadej Pogaar (on the left in pink) on the second gravel sector at Bagnaia.

Onto the penultimate sector and Thymen Arensman took it up on the front, with Geraint Thomas on his wheel, to set a hard tempo. Magnus Sheffield then did a great ride to pace the bunch into and across the final sector, before Narvaez followed and shut down a dangerous move from Romain Bardet (dsm-firmenich PostNL) to ensure no time was lost to potential GC rivals.

Into the finish, and Narvaez launched a typically punchy sprint, to place fifth behind the breakaway on a day won by Pelayo Sanchez (Movistar).

The finish: Pelayo Sanchez beats Julian Alaphilippe to the line.
