The Story of the Tour de France, volume 1 South Salem Cycleworks frames Melanoma: It Started With a Freckle
Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle

David L. Stanley's masterful telling of his bout with skin cancer Melanoma: It Started with a Freckle is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Perugia at 1:30 PM, local time: 21C (70F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 21 km/hr (13 mph). No rain is forecast.

The stage: An individual time trial clearly divided into two parts. The first 32 km, flat and largely non-technical, lead to the foot of Umbria’s capital city of Perugia. The riders then tackle the ascent of Casaglia, with gradients up to 16%. The road climbs in fits and starts all the way to the finish line.

Last kilometers
The last few kilometers are all uphill with gradients reaching double figures. Several bends and counter-slopes before the wide final hairpin bends leading to the final straight. To be noted at 6.4 km from the finish line the 1300 m of Casaglia at almost 12% with peaks of 16%. Final straight of 250 m on a 6m wide cobbled road.

The race: The riders started every 60 seconds, except for the last 15, i.e. the top 15 in the general classification, who started every three minutes. The last was Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), who hit the road at 4:24 pm.

Julius Van Den Berg (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) was the first rider off at 1:10 PM.

Mikkel Bjerg (UAE Team Emirates) finishes his ride, 53min 40sec. That's 45.391 km/hr

The race organizer posted this stage 7 summary:

The Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has won Stage 7 of the 107th Giro d’Italia, the 40.6km long Foligno-Perugia Tudor ITT. Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) and Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers) finished second and third respectively.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner and Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar said: “I’m super happy that I felt good on the time trial bike. I didn’t ride any TT since the world championships last year but I’ve worked a lot on it in the meantime and I’m glad it paid off today. I started at an easier pace to get used to the TT bike. Then I rode the climb full gas. I heard two time gaps but I wasn’t sure what they said in the radio so I was focusing on myself. The climb suited me better than Pippo [Ganna] for sure. It was quite steep so it was to my advantage but it won’t be the case in the next time trial. Tomorrow I know Prati di Tivo. It was the queen stage when. I won up there during Tirreno-Adriatico two years ago but it’s just one stage of a Grand Tour this time around so it won’t be my goal to get my record time of climbing there after Lutsenko and Ulissi rode very fast up that hill one month ago during Il Giro d’Abruzzo”.

Second-place Filippo Ganna's Team INEOS Grenadiers posted this report:

Filippo Ganna places second as the Grenadiers make it four in the top 10 on the road to Perugia.

The Italian was the first of the TT specialists to hit the course, and set some ferocious benchmarks at the first and second time check, before crossing the line fastest to land in the hot seat.

Magnus Sheffield and Thymen Arensman would also fly round the course, to place second and third respectively on the line. This made it a podium lockout for the team, with just the GC riders remaining.

Geraint Thomas would take to the course and produce a typically battling performance, falling slightly short of the top five but still coming home in 10th on the day.

The win would ultimately go to Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), who, as the last rider of the day, crossed the line 17 seconds ahead of Pippo after a dominant final split.

"I tried to ride within myself, but when it was time to go I felt okay but just lacking a bit. It is what it is." - Geraint Thomas.
