Weather at the finish city of Prati di Tivo at 2:10 PM, local tme: 16C (60F), sunny, with the wind from the northeast at 14 km/hr (8 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The stage: A short stage with no flat ground to play with and plenty of elevation gain. Just after the start, the pink caravan climbs Forca di Cerro, followed by Forca Capistrello, which is over 16 km long. The peloton will then skim over the Terminillo massif to reach Capitignano, with continuous ups and downs leading to the western slope of the Capannelle Pass. The climb ends a short distance from the pass at Croce Abbio, where the 30 km descent begins, leading to the foot of the final climb. The descent is characterized by numerous bends and two long, well-lit tunnels. The finish asperity to Prati di Tivo adds 14 kilometers at 7% to the mix.

Last kilometers:
The final climb is 14.5 km long at 7% average with peaks of up to 12%. It counts 22 hairpin bends and has the steepest gradients in the first part, with peaks around the village of Pietracamela, where the intermediate sprint is located. The last three kilometers are at 7%. The final straight is approximately 300 m long and 6 m wide on an asphalt surface.

The race: Christophe Laporte (Visma | Lease a Bike) did not start. He never fully recovered from his crash in stage five.

The race organizer posted this short summary:

The Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) won Stage 8 of the 107th Giro d’Italia, the 152km long Spoleto-Prati di Tivo. Daniel Felipe Martinez (Bora – Hansgrohe) and Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) finished second and third respectively.

Stage 8 gets underway.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner and Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar said: "I was not expecting to win at all today. But as a team we rode super well from the beginning. We hit the last climb with a good advantage. Rafal Majka did a great job in the lead out. It’s amazing to win again here at Prati di Tivo. As soon as we survived the first long categorised climb, my team-mates wanted me to go for the stage win.

"At the bottom of the last climb, when I saw the guys, Felix [Grossschartner] and Rafal were still doing well, I became confident that I could win today. We already saw Dani Martinez doing very good finishes this year, obviously I was thinking of him as my main opponent, but he wasn’t the only one. Antonio Tiberi tried a few times. But I had it more or less under control. I hope it’s a relaxing day tomorrow but the last 50km are tricky so I will have to stay focused till we reach Naples and after that I think it’s a rest day".

The peloton descends a switchback.

And here's the stage eight report from fifth place Geraint Thomas' Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Geraint Thomas sprinted to fifth place atop Prati di Tivo as stage eight came down to a select group of general classification contenders.

The Welshman retained third overall, crossing the line just behind stage winner and maglia rosa Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates). Thomas now sits two minutes and 58 seconds back on the Slovenian.

Thymen Arensman was also present in the lead group and did a great job to twice hit the front and maintain a tempo in the closing metres. The Dutchman finished eighth on the stage, with his strong performance moving him up into the top 10 overall, now ninth on GC.

A fast start to the stage saw an inevitable battle for the breakaway. Tobias Foss was active early on, while in the end it would be Jhonatan Narvaez and Magnus Sheffield who forged on into the day's break.

Sadly the move was never afforded a large enough advantage to stay clear, with a lack of cohesion ultimately seeing all of its participants reeled in on the final climb.

Geraint Thomas:
"Today was a lot better. I didn't feel great at the start but it was a solid start. I felt good on the last climb and I was kind of hoping [UAE] would squeeze a bit more.

"It was good - I just got a bit bogged down in that sprint, and I didn't quite have the legs anyway. But it's all good and better than yesterday."

On the Prati di Tivo climb, 3 kms from the finish: This is the 14-man lead group containing Majka, Pogačar, Martinez, Tiberi, Uijtdebroeks, Thomas, Arensman, Baudin, O’Connor, Rubio, Hirt, Storer, Pozzovivo, & Fortunato.
