Weather at the finish city of Francavilla al Mare at 1:40 PM, local time: 22C (72F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the east at 21 km/hr (13 mph). There is a 7% chance of rain.

The stage: Stage 11 is clearly divided into two parts. The first crosses the Apennines to Termoli and the second, entirely flat, is played out along the ss.16 state road and the shores of the Adriatic Sea. The Apennines have some rolling roads with numerous bends. Once on the coast, the peloton enters the Adriatica state road in Termoli, which the riders will follow as far as Francavilla al Mare. The last 4 km only feature two right-hand bends that lead into the very long final straight.

Last kilometers:
Last 3.5 km almost completely straight through the town, perfectly flat. The final straight is 3,000 m on asphalt, width 8 m.

The race: Riders not starting: Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma | Lease a Bike), who had been sitting in fourth place, Stafano Oldani (Cofidis), & Louis Barré (Arkea-B&B Hotels).

Here's the statement from Team Visma | Lease a Bike about Uijtdebroeks: The Giro will have to continue without the biggest smile of the peloton. We regret to announce that Cian Uijtdebroeks is forced to abandon the race. Cian did not feel well the past days and after yesterday’s stage, he fell ill. We wish you a speedy recovery.

The peloton 60 kilometers into the stage.

The Giro organizer posted this short report:

Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) has won Stage 11 of the 107th Giro d’Italia, the 207km long Foiano di Val Fortore-Francavilla al Mare. Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) and Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) finished second and third respectively. [Ed: Tim Merlier was downgraded for a sprint infraction]

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Jonathan Milan said: “Winning is not just about the 20 seconds of the sprint that make the victory in the end. It comes from all the work we’ve done before as a team. The way they have supported me and pushed me to sprint, that’s what makes me happy. I thank them from the bottom of my heart. It’s always tricky to sprint on straight roads and find the right moment to react when someone like Tim Merlier today launches the sprint. But it went well. It’s very special to win a second stage, this time with the Maglia Ciclamino. Last year after I won I was always up there in the sprints but I couldn’t win another one. It’s important to learn from the mistakes I’ve made in the past”.

Here's the race report from third-place Giovanni Lonardi's Team Polti Kometa:

Even a squad dedicated to breakaways can decide to stay together to work for their reference man to chase the result. As in today’s 11th stage of the Giro d’Italia, a long transfer from Campania to Abruzzo via Apulia and Molise. After the neutralization of a small breakaway 35 kilometers from the finish line, Team Polti Kometa‘s train was present and lively in the approach operations to the a headwind sprint.

There Giovanni Lonardi, well positioned until -500 meters, managed to slip into the right space and picking the right wheel to follow: in the sprint he placed fourth, but the jury then downgrades Merlier for an infraction and for the ’96 class Veronese it’s a third place. First podium ever at the Corsa Rosa for him, second for the team in this edition after Pietrobon’s in Lucca. Behind the two main rivals for the maglia ciclamino Milan and Groves, in Francavilla al Mare there’s the number 164 from Polti Kometa!

“We always stayed in front with Mirco Maestri and my teammates – Lonardi recounts after the finish – and I situated myself on the right side of the road behind the Lidl Trek, I gained several positions and I’m very happy to have achieved the maximum I could in front of very strong opponents!”

This is the analysis of the sports director Stefano Zanatta: “This morning we decided to focus on the sprint, also because we knew that the big trains, after being fooled by the fugitives on the fifth raceday, would never have given space. So we chose to save the energy spent in this first half of the Giro and worked for Lona, who is showing good form and confirmed it fully in this finale. All excellent, from Fabbro and the Bais brothers who pulled at the start of the stage and then protected Piganzoli until Muñoz, Pietrobon and captain Maestri who supported our sprinter in the decisive phases.”
