Bicycle History

James Witherell's book Bicycle History: A Chronological History of People, Races and Technology is available in both print and Kindle eBook formats. To get your copy just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Livigno at 1:45 PM, local time: 12C (53F), mostly cloudy, with the wind fro the south at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is a 5% chance of rain.

The stage: Stage 15 is the longest stge of this Giro d'Italia and is arguably the hardest of the entire Giro. It sees the start of a tough week of mountains. The route from Manerba del Garda to Livigno amounts to 220 kilometers and takes in an elevation gain of 5,700 meters. The road climbs at shallow gradients to Casto, where Colle San Zeno, the first climb of the day, kicks in with its 13.8km at 6.6% average gradient. This is followed by a short descent before the riders climb steadily up the Camonica Valley to pass Aprica. To round off an extremely tough stage, the riders will face the Passo d’Eira which with the last 2km climbing up the Mottolino ski slope.

Last kilometers
The last kilometers are uphill. The gradient changes drastically with 2 km to go, after the Eira Pass, where the average gradient remains above 10% although the road has steep ramps interspersed with short, less steep sections. In the last km, the final ramp has gradients of up to 19% followed by a brief, less demanding part and a further “step” that leads to the final 50m straight.

One rider knows what is ahead.

The race: Vadim Pronskiy (Astana Qazaqstan) did not start and early in the stage Clément Davy (Groupama-FDJ) abandoned.

Here's the race organizer's report:

The Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has won Stage 15 of the 107th Giro d’Italia, the 222 km long Manerba del Garda-Livigno (Mottolino). Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team) and Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost) finished second and third respectively.

It's time to race. The riders leave Manerba del Garda for what might be more than six brutal hours in the saddle. RCS photo

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner and Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar said: “Today was one of the best days of my career. It was a very nice stage with a good route and very nice climbs. We had this stage in mind since December. I’m super happy that we kept it under control. It was a very strong breakaway. We had to be smart because of the tail wind. I’m very happy to win the queen stage of the Giro in Livigno, one of my favourite places in Italy. I opened a gap after Rafal Majka finished his turn. I continued solo… When I used to watch Quintana and Froome I was always angry that I wouldn’t attack from far out but today he did. But today he did a super good job and also Georg Steinhauser, there are a few riders who deserve a mention today”.

Here's the report from fourth-place Romain Bardet's Team dsm-firmenich PostNL:

The queen stage at the Giro d’Italia saw a battling Team dsm-firmenich PostNL performance where after some great support from the team, Romain Bardet attacked on the final ascent to take fourth place on the stage and move up on GC.

A brutal day of 222 kilometres lay ahead of the peloton as they left Manerba del Garda this morning, which included 5500 metres of climbing and an altitude summit finish at Livigno. It was an intriguing start to things with a break made up of mostly rouleurs escaped early on, but a strong pace in the peloton remained and going onto the climbs it exploded, with almost a mini-peloton going clear in a counter move. The team marked it out with Chris Hamilton and Gijs Leemreize, before settling in to see what happened. Hamilton sat up on the next climb to drop back and help the guys in the peloton, while Leemreize stayed before himself dropping back later.

Heading over the famous Mortirolo the team still had Hamilton, Leemreize and Kevin Vermaerke alongside Bardet in a reduced peloton, as the bunch then charged along the valley road before the final climbs of the day. The team did well to support Bardet for as long as they could, offering him bottles and taking wind, before the pace ramped up; just like the altitude. Roughly 15 kilometres from the finish Pogacar would put in his stage winning attack, while Bardet followed in the remnants of the GC group, before he too countered. Pushing all the way to the line on the stinging gradients, Bardet took a great fourth place on the day and with it some time on those around him on GC, moving the team up to seventh on GC ahead of the second rest day.

The front 18-man group with about 50 km to go. The Maglia Rosa group is about 3 km back.

Speaking after the finish a tired but smiling Bardet expressed: “I’m really happy with that ride today. I said yesterday that a new Giro started for us today. The guys rode really well to support me throughout the day, I always had someone with me and they were there until the final main climb. I’m happy to be up there and feeling good, so we will keep fighting and trying in the final week.”

Team dsm-firmenich PostNL coach Matt Winston added: “It was a good day today. The boys rode really well in the peloton and looked after Romain all day. We had Gijs and Chris up front in the big break but they came back once we had marked that move and knew what was going on. The guys then positioned really well going into the final and looked after him. Once we got to 2000 metres it’s where Romain really is strong so he hit out there. He managed to finish fourth on the stage and take a bit of time back on some of the guys around him, so we go into the rest day really happy with that performance.”

2 km to go: Tadej Pogacar overtakes an escaped Nairo Quintana and heads for another brilliant stage win. RCS photo
