2024 Giro d'Italia

106th edition: May 4 - 26, 2024
Stage 16: May 21

Back to 2024 Giro d'Italia

Tuesday, May 21: Stage 16, Livogno Laas - Santa Cristina Val Gardena (Monte Pana), 206 118.4 km

A writer for the Giro organization summed it up: "This is almost ridiculous! Pogacar is going for another stage win without apparent effort." And as you can see, he succeeded. RCS photo

Weather at Bolzano, on the route, 45 kms from the finish, at 1:45 PM, local time: 16C (60F), rain, with the wind from the southwest at 8 km/hr (5 mph). Earlier, there had been snow. There is about a 50% chance that the rain will continue through the afternoon.

The stage: A high mountain fraction broken up by the Adige and Isarco valleys, basically a 3-part stage: mountain, with Foscagno Stelvio (this year’s Cima Coppi, the highest point of the race); plain, from Prato allo Stevio until shortly after Bolzano; mountain, with the ascent of Passo Pinei and the finish in Val Gardena. The stage runs on roads with fairly wide carriageways and in good condition. Of particular note are the Stelvio tunnels (wide and well lit) uphill after Bormio and downhill shortly before Merano.

Last kilometers
The last 3 km are almost entirely uphill except for the short descent leading from the center of Santa Cristina to the bridge (-2 km) where the final wall begins. Average gradient of around 12% with steep pitches of 16% in the initial part with narrow hairpin bends. The final straight is 100 m long and 6 m wide.

Race leader Tadej Pogacar at what is a cold, wet start to the day.

The race: Because of rider protests that racing in freezing rain and snow was too dangerous, the Umbrail pass was removed from the route.

Danny Van Poppel (Bora-hansgrohe) & Jenthe Biermans (Arkea-B&B Hotels) did not start. Julius Van Den Berg (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) abandonded early in the stage.

Here's the race organizer's stage 16 report:

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has won Stage 16 of the 107th Giro d’Italia, the 118.4 km long Lasa/Laas-Santa Cristina Val Gardena/St. Christina in Gröden (Monte Pana). Giulio Pellizzari (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) and Daniel Felipe Martinez (Bora – Hansgrohe) finished second and third respectively.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner and Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar said: “We wanted to leave some gap to the breakaway riders because we didn’t want to take any risk but Movistar decided to pull. Once we were close to the attackers I said to Novak and Majka to push and in the finale I made the difference again. Five wins is a great achievement”.

The stage gets underway.

Team INEOS Grenadiers posted this:

Thymen Arensman climbed to sixth, with Geraint Thomas digging deep to limit his losses on a weather affected stage 16 of the Giro d’Italia.

The day started in a confused state, with forecasted severe weather on the already altered course causing concern for the peloton. Some back-and-forth with the race organisers would see the stage significantly shortened, with the main climb of the day, the Umbrail pass, tackled in cars, rather than bikes, owing to the extreme conditions.

The new, shortened route kicked off from 120 kilometres remaining, with a small break gaining less than two minutes before their advantage was eradicated on the first of the climbs in the finale.

Onto the penultimate climb and the Dutchman was unfortunate to puncture as the pace was on, but great teamwork saw him return to the group in short order.

With the pressure ramping up, Thymen and Geraint were present in an ever-reducing GC group, as they bounced into the final climb of the day. Fierce gradients would prove decisive, with Arensman going well to climb to sixth, and Geraint digging deep in tough conditions to limit his losses in 15th.

Julian Alaphilippe was the first rider over the Passo Pinei, 12 km from the finish.
