Weather at Pieve Tesino, on the route, 12 kms from the finish, at 1:50 PM, local time: 14C (57F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the east-southeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 16% chance of rain. Early in the stage the peloton was hit by rain.

The stage: This is an intense climbing stage with brutal amount of elevation gain despite its short distance. The route climbs from the start on the Passo Sella, followed by a flat section in the Fassa and Fiemme Valleys all the way to Predazzo. The peloton will then tackle the 19km Passo Rolle, then the shorter, third category Passo Gobbera. The 13.3km Brocon Pass comes for the first time (eastern side) with around 50km of the stage remaining, and the riders will pass it for a second time (south-western side) to finish the stage.

Last kilometers:
The last kilometers are uphill. The steep part of the last KOM, with gradients of up to 10%, ends at 2 km to go, where the road flattens out to slightly over 5%. The last 500 meters are slightly uphill. The final straight is 100 m long and 6 m wide.

It's time to go race in the mountains. RCS photo

The race: Here's the race organizer's stage 17 summary:

Georg Steinhauser (EF Education – EasyPost) has won Stage 17 of the 107th Giro d’Italia, the 159 km long Selva di Val Gardena/Wolkenstein in Gröden-Passo Brocon. Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) and Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) finished second and third respectively.

We're in the big stuff. Here the peloton climbs the Passo Sella early in the stage. RCS photo

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Georg Steinhauser said: “This is something unbelievable. Already on stage 8, I realised I had good legs and I thought I might be able to win a stage. The queen stage to Livigno was an incredible day. My third place already made my Giro successful. And today, already when I rode to the sign on, I said to myself maybe I’ll win today. I went from the beginning in the breakaway. It was strange because we got caught. Then I decided to try again. I did and it worked out. The roads were wet and slippery. I was nervous on the last climb. I knew I had to push all the way to the finish. I heard that Pogačar was attacking but I was already with 2km to go. Let’s hope this is the beginning of a big career”.
Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) retains the Maglia Rosa.

Here's the report from Geraint Thomas' Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Geraint Thomas climbed to fourth place on stage 17 of the Giro, with Thymen Arensman close behind in eighth after another hectic day of racing at the Giro.

The stage started rapidly, with the relocated Cima Coppi proving a great incentive to launch attacks up the road from the gun. Over the first climb and the GC group was small, but with the Grenadiers well represented.

Moves from other teams ensured a break never got much of an advantage, before Georg Steinhauser (EF Education - EasyPost) launched a solo move some 34 kilometres out.

Into the foot of the final climb and Ben Swift would lead the bunch in, after a huge ride at the head of the peloton for much of the day. He would then leave the pace making to Jhonatan Narvaez, before Thymen Arensman would rip the group to shreds.

Geraint would then follow an attack from Dani Martínez (BOH) and they would go to the line together. In spite of the huge effort, Arensman would come home eighth, just behind the lead group.

He's gone. Georg Steinhauser climbs to the finish for a brilliant solo win.
