Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

Les Woodland's book Tour of Flanders: The Inside Story - The rocky roads of the Ronde van Vlaanderen is available in print, Kindle eBook and audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the finish city of Sappada at 2:00 PM, local time: 13C (56F), cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 24% chance of rain.

The stage: The stage begins by riding up the Tagliamento Valley, heading north and crossing the towns of San Daniele del Friuli, Forgaria nel Friuli and Peonis. After Tolmezzo, the succession of climbs leading to the finish line begins: Passo Duron, Sella Valcalda and Cima Sappada, where a short descent leads to the finish line. The roads have narrow carriageways and numerous bends.

Last kilometers
At about 5 km to go, the riders enter the Sappada cycle path, with a slightly narrower carriageway. At 2 km from the finish line, a right-hand turn leads onto the final climb (up to 10%) until entering the town center, where the gradient continues at around 5%. In the last km the road descends for a few hundred meters to the final 400m straight.

The race: Nick Schultz (Israel-Premier Tech) did not start, leaving 143 riders in the race and just three riders in the Israel-Premier Tech team.

Here's the race organizer's stage 19 report:

He had done it before, back in 2021, in Bagno di Romagna. And he did it again today, in Sappada, the land of biathlon, of the Carnia Arena and of Lisa Vittozzi, the world champion. If it had been a biathlon competition, Andrea Vendrame‘s performance would have been a 5 out of 5 on the range, a clean shoot.

His legs were those of his best days. After all, one does not enter a breakaway after a fast and furious start and over 80km of brawling without being physically and mentally fit. The breakaway was high-calibre, featuring the likes of Julian Alaphilippe, Georg Steinhauser, Jhonatan Narvaez and Pelayo Sanchez, all riders who have already won a stage in this Giro, not by chance.

How to beat them, then? By timing it right, by moving perfectly, by not doing anything wrong at the range. In the pouring rain, Vendrame attacked on the descent between the last two climbs… a madman, but that’s one of the reasons why they call him Joker (the other is a scar on his face due to a training accident with a car). Vendrame bombed down the descent and opened up a lead of more than one minute on the 5-man chasing group. At the Carnia Biathlon Arena, he did not have to take any penalty laps, he went straight to the finish line in Sappada. A victory, a triumph, three years after his last success. Vendrame had already won a Giro d’Italia stage in 2021, even then scoring 5 out of 5 on the polygon and beating stronger riders than him on the climb to Bagno di Romagna.

Tomorrow sees the double ascent to Monte Grappa. All will be settled there. For climbers and GC riders, it’s tomorrow or never.

Here's the report from fourth-place Jhonatan Narvaez's Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Jhonatan Narvaez finished fourth from the stage 19 breakaway to continue his superb Giro d'Italia.

The Ecuadorian powered his way into the day's escape and was able to follow the accelerations as the group became more select over a pair of categorised climbs.

Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) was able to go clear on the descent off the Sella Valcalda, opening up a gap to the chasers which could not be closed.

With seven kilometers to go Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon Ag2r La Mondiale) is alone and off the front with Georg Steinhauser & Pelayo Sanchez chasing, 1min 15sec back.

At the line Narvaez came home fourth, in what is his fourth top-five finish of the race.

Behind, the GC group would cross the line almost 16 minutes back. There was late drama as Geraint Thomas crashed following a touch of wheels on the final ascent. A quick bike change saw the Welshman back under way, where he was able to rejoin a select GC group which had sportingly knocked off the pace.

The GC went unchanged as the group crossed the line together, with one big mountain showdown remaining on Saturday. Thomas remains third, 22 seconds back on Daniel Martinez (Bora-Hansgrohe). Thymen Arensman was also present and retains sixth overall.
