Weather at the finish city of Bassano del Grappa at 1:40 PM, local time: 19C (67F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the south at 13 km/hr (8 mph). There is a 10% chance of rain, growing to 40% at 5:00 PM. There was rain at the start in Alpago.

The stage: Relatively flat opening at Lake Santa Croce, heading downhill to Vittorio Veneto and the Muro di Ca’ del Poggio, which leads into the Prosecco area. After crossing the Piave River, the route reaches the slopes of the brutal Monte Grappa, which will be tackled twice. Halfway down the descent (towards Romano d’Ezzelino) the short but steep (over 10%) Pianaro climb will be tackled as well. The climb of Monte Grappa winds with numerous bends and hairpin bends on a relatively narrow mountain road for over 18 km at an average gradient of 8% with peaks of up to 14% and is followed by a long descent to the line.

Last kilometers
The last 3 km wind through urban centers with straights and some connecting curves. A slight descent then leads into the final 350 m straight.

The race: Tadej Pogacar has earned 19 Maglie Rosa in a single Giro. This is the same as Johan de Muynck in 1978 and Evgeni Berzin in 1994. The only riders to do better are Franco Chioccioli and Miguel Indurain: 20 in 1991 and 1992; and the record of 21 by Eddy Merckx in 1973, Gianni Bugno in 1990 and Tony Rominger in 1995.

Pogacar rode alone, off the front, for 34.1 kilometers!

Race leader Tadej Pogacar was looking quite pink at the start.

Here's the race organizer's report:

The Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has won Stage 20 of the 107th Giro d’Italia, the 184 km long Alpago-Bassano del Grappa. Valentin Paret-Peintre (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) and Daniel Felipe Martinez (Bora – Hansgrohe) finished second and third respectively.

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner and Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar said: “More or less this was the plan. We did a perfect job as a team. Molano and Rui worked at the beginning, covering attacks and making sure that no big group went away. Mikkel [Bjerg] and Vegard [Stake Laengen] set a good pace over the climb the first time. Then we executed the plan and I had good legs so I’m super happy that I got good gap at the top and I didn’t need to go full gas in the downhill. I cannot describe how it was feeling with all the fans on the Monte Grappa. Maybe it wasn’t important to do this today but we’ve had the Maglia Rosa since day 2 so I wanted to finish the Giro with a good shape and a good mentality. I think I have achieved that. I’ve never been to Rome before but I’ll enjoy it tomorrow for sure”.

And here's the report from Geraint Thomas' Team INEOS Grenadiers:

Geraint Thomas crossed the finish line of the penultimate stage of the Giro in seventh place, to all but secure third overall in the Italian Grand Tour, with Thymen Arensman in sixth on GC.

Two ascents of the Monta Grappa climb would prove a fitting test to end the Giro, with the tough gradients ensuring any riders suffering three weeks into the race would have no where to hide.

While the first ascent was taking at a hard tempo, the second ascent would see the GC action. Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) would attack some six kilometres from the top, with G and Thymen Arensman measuring their efforts in response.

The day's first climb, the Muro di Ca' del Poggio, about 30 km into the stage.

Over the top of the climb, and Thomas would find himself some 15 seconds off a group containing his podium rivals, with Thymen working hard to close the gap just behind.

After some hard work from G and his group, the two splits would merge, and the Welshman would sprint to seventh on the stage, losing no time to those around him on GC. Arensman would come a further XXXX back to keep his sixth place in the overall standings.

He's gone. Pogacar attacked on the second ascent on Monte Grappa and here he descends to the finish. Alone.

A little post-race celebration.

Tadej Pogacar has effectively won the 2024 Giro d'Italia. All he really has to do is stay upright on his bike during the final Rome stage.
