José Cayetano Sarmiento Crashes out of Eneco Tour
Cannondale rider José Cayetano Sarmiento crashed hard yesterday (Tuesday) at the Eneco Tour's second stage and broke his left collarbone. This obviously ruins his plans to race the Vuelta, around which he had built his season.
Frederik Willems Will Retire
Yesterday I noted that Frederik Willems will have surgery to repair a collarbone broken during a training ride. Well, after racing for thirteen seasons it looks like Willems is going to hang up the chamois, a decision he had made last winter. Given that it will take a couple of months to recover from his surgery, he might not race again.
Belkin Re-signs Riders
Belkin, which will be sponsored for two years starting in 2015 by the Dutch National Lottery and BrandLoyalty (story here) has re-signed several important riders. Team manager Richard Plugge announced the the contracts for Robert Gesink, Wilco Kelderman and Steven Kruijswijk have been extended for two years, through 2016. Kelderman was rumored to have been courted by Orica-GreenEdge and Sky and to have made a 2015 Tour de France ride a condition of his signing.
The team already has the services of Laurens ten Dam, Moreno Hofland and Sept Vanmarcke secured. The team did lose Bauke Mollema to Trek and Lars Boom to Astana.
