Woods, Slagter to lead Cannondale-Drapac at Tour Down Under
The team sent me this news:
And finally, bike racing is back.
The peloton will return to WorldTour racing on Jan. 17 in Adelaide, Australia, for the Santos Tour Down Under. The race comes at the height of Australian summer and offers little in the way of a smooth transition to racing — those who ride well at TDU have to arrive in absolute form.
To this end, Cannondale-Drapac is sending a motivated squad Down Under. Tom-Jelte Slagter, winner of TDU general classification in 2013, and Mike Woods, in just his second top level season but a danger man nonetheless, will lead the team in the six-stage race.
Joining Slagter and Woods are Paddy Bevin, Brendan Canty, Will Clarke, Alex Howes, and Tom Van Asbroeck. The race marks the first with Cannondale-Drapac for Canty, Clarke, and Van Asbroeck. The same lineup will also race the People’s Choice Classic on Jan. 15 in Adelaide and again on Jan. 29 at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, now a WorldTour event.

For Woods, the TDU may be a sequel to a script he wrote last year. “Last year I knew I was in really good form and Jonathan Vaughters told me, ‘we're going to make you the guy for Down Under.’ I was super-stoked about that. In retrospect, that was crazy that JV just was like, "Dude I'm going to give this rookie a shot at a WorldTour race’ with no experience whatsoever, but it panned out awesome,” Woods said. “I think when the guys saw my name as one of the leaders in the pre-race e-mail they were probably thinking, ‘Um, this is a really bad idea.’”
It wasn’t. Then unknown, the neopro finished fifth overall and third on two stages. “I want to replicate that if not improve on that performance this year,” Woods added. “We also have a good guy in Tom-Jelte Slagter, who's won the race before, so we're coming in with a very strong roster. I feel good having TJ there —it takes a bit of pressure off me. We have a few ways to do well.”
When Slagter last lined up in Australia to race, he won the overall and the queen stage, then riding for Belkin Pro Cycling. That victory sticks out as one of his most memorable. “The one I recall the most was the Tour Down Under win in 2013. It was a great team effort” Slagter said. “I’m happy to be going back to the TDU — I’ve got good memories there. It’s an early race but an important one. We’ve got a good team going, and I think we’re all motivated. Between myself and Mike Woods I think the overall is something we can look at.”
The TDU parcours is one for an all-rounder, with two decisive days for general classification. The climb up Willunga Hill always shapes the race, and another, that up to Paracombe via Torrens Hill Road, should also prove decisive. The race’s winning margins are narrow and time bonuses often come into play, putting a tall order on sport directors to keep things under control.
“The main thing on my mind is getting the best out of what we have at this race. I think the guys we have here are really good, so it's great to be in a position to think that we can do something,” said Tom Southam, who will make his sport director debt for Cannondale-Drapac. “Both Mike and TJ have proven they can do well here, both are great athletes and having them both there gives us a great hand to play. Then on the other stages we've got Paddy Bevin and Tom Van Asbroeck.”
Southam was a DS last season with Drapac Professional Cycling. This race marks his first in the driver’s seat of a WorldTour team. “You could say it's like being given the keys to your older brother's sports car for the first time,” he said. “First thing you want to do is drive it fast, you also need to be cautious that you don't plow it in to a wall. But at least you know someone somewhere trusts you enough to leave you in charge.”
The Drapac name returns to the race in 2017 as a WorldTour title sponsor. “It’s great to be a part of a WorldTour team, especially at such a prestigious race like the TDU,” said Michel Drapac, a co-owner of the Cannondale-Drapac team. Drapac, known for his support of Australian cycling, hopes the race will find a way to open up to more Australian teams in the years to come.
“While the TDU is a great race, it has the potential to become even greater to improve cycling in Australia. Given how the local scene is suffering, I would like to see the TDU somehow integrated into the national calendar, which would encourage Australian businesses to inject money into cycling,” Drapac said. “It would be great if the governing body of the TDU was able to work alongside the UCI, even by allowing the top two National Road Series teams a wildcard entry into the race. What that would do for the grassroots level of cycling in this country would be extraordinary and would also stimulate some much-needed investment into the sport.”

Team Sunweb previews Tour Down Under
This came to me from the team:
TOUR DOWN UNDER (WT): The first race of the men's UCI WorldTour gets underway next week at the Tour Down Under and Team Sunweb have a strong team lined up to make the official road racing debut of the team. Taking place from 17th-22nd January, the 19th edition of the race sees riders cover a total of 828.km over 6 stages. The first stage takes the same route as 2016 and will be a day for the sprinters whilst stage 2 is one for the climbers, with a challenging climb likely to create some time gaps. Both stages 3 and 4 host sprint finishes but the real GC contenders are likely to be decided during the queen stage up Willunga Hill. The 2017 edition finishes with a circuit race finish in Adelaide, a final day for the sprinters.
"Next week we will start the WorldTour season for Team Sunweb in my home town of Adelaide at the Tour Down Under, all seven riders have had a good build up to the race and I expect the four riders starting new on the team here will be out to impress," said coach Luke Roberts (AUS).
Nikias Arndt (shown at the 2015 Alberta Tour) will racing in Australia
"With the new guys in the team we've been working on sprint preparation routines over the last couple of months, and we hope for some nice results in the sprint stages. For those stages Nikias [Arndt] is in good shape and will be a contender for a stage podium finish. On top of that with Wilco we'll be aiming for a nice GC result. He finished 6th in 2013 here and we'll see what he can do this year."
RACE: Santos Tour Down Under (WT)
DATE: 17-22/01/2017
COACH: Luke Roberts (AUS)
Team Movistar also arrives in Australia
Here's the team's update:
The Movistar squad, directed by José Luis Arrieta, reached South Australia early on Monday (European morning), will combat jet-lag during the upcoming week before the official start to their 2017 schedule.
9 JANUARY 2017: The last of three flights from Saturday evening came to an end for the twelve Movistar Team members present in the 19th Tour Down Under around 8.30am Euro time this Monday. A much shorter team than in other WorldTour races, riders Gorka Izagirre, Marc Soler, Jasha Sütterlin, Carlos Barbero, José & Jesús Herrada and Víctor de la Parte will be supported by José Luis Arrieta (sports director), Fermín Gómez, Senen Pintado (mechanics), Gary Baños and Fernando Gómez (carers).
The quiet schedule for the Blues' next week includes not-so-demanding training rides along the coast, as well as key recce's of the most important stages in the Tour Down Under, spanning from Tuesday 17 to Sunday 22. Before that, the Spanish outfit will take to the teams' presentation (Saturday 14) and start competing at the People's Choice Classic (Sunday 15), whose 50km, 22-lap, twilight course (morning in Europe) will take the peloton southbound through Wakefield Road, instead of the traditional Rymill Park finish from the last few years.
