Women's Olympic Road Race, Rio de Janeiro, 136.9 km

Anna Van der Vleuten

Anna Van der Breggen wins the women's road race in front of Emma Johansson (yellow) and Elisa Longo Borghini

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

The Race: The race had two big moves. With about forty kilometers to go, a small group of powerful riders, including Marianne Vos, (2012 Olympic champion) and Pauline Ferrand-Prevost (current world road champ) went clear. They were rounded up with less than 25 kilometers to race.

On the final climb, Mara Abbot and Annemiek van Vleuten got away. On the dangereous descent that took out several riders in the previous day's men's race, van Vleuten went down hard. That left Abbot to try to get to the finish without the powerful Dutchwoman's help.

Abbot came close, but after the final kilometer mark, she was passed by the trio of Anna Van der Bruggen, Emma Johansson and Elisa Longo Borghini.

Van de Bruggen was the speediest of the three, making her the 2016 gold medalist.

Van Vleuten was conscious when she was loaded into the ambulance and is said to be OK.

Complete Results:

136.9 kilometers raced at an average speed of 35.489 km/hr
