Thor Hushovd

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

Thor Hushovd (born January 18, 1978) was a gifted sprinter and time trialist whose career shone in the early 2000s. That combination of speed and power allowed him to win classics, stages in all three Grand Tours and in 2010, the World Road Championships.

Early on the Norwegian powerhouse showed he could win, becoming the Under-23 World Time Trial Champion in 1998 as well as winning Paris-Roubaix Espoirs (under-23).

By 2001 he was winning shorter stage races and he was just getting started. In 2002 he won his first Tour de France stage and by 2005 he was able to win the Tour's points classification.

Though he broke his collarbone in May of 2010, he was still able to win a stage of the Tour in July and then the world road championship in Australia.

His 2011 Tour de France was remarkable. Though he wasn't a great climber, he could use his stunning descending skills to keep the GC lead from stage two until stage nine, where he lost the yellow jersey to Thomas Voeckler.

A look at his list of major victories below will show that he won nothing of note in 2012. His best placing was fourteenth in Paris-Roubaix. He was diagnosed with viral infection (probably mononucleosis).

He was able to recover so that in 2013, his last good year, he won both the GC and points classification of the Arctic Race of Norway as well as several stages in shorter stage races.

Still hampered by the lingering effects of his 2012 bout of mononucleosis and struggling to find his old form, he announced plans to retire after the world championships. He didn't get that far. He crashed in September and rode his last race in Belgium, the GP Impanis-Van Petegem
