The race: Here's the report from the Sunweb Development Team.
Development Team Sunweb were in action today at Paris-Bourges; a tough race that features several short but sharp climbs throughout it’s 193 kilometre long route, before a flatter finale. Departing from Gien, the racing was intense at the start of the day with numerous teams looking to be present in the break. However, it didn’t take too long for the move to form and a group of four to get clear of the bunch.
The race then settled into a rhythm as those ahead quickly built up a large advantage of over seven minutes, before the peloton started to set tempo and begin the chase. The gap remained steady but as the hills in the middle of the day became more frequent, the breakaway’s advantage started to drop dramatically. Soon the race was back together before the peloton fragmented over the numerous hills, with Nils Eekhoff, Leon Heinschke and Tim Naberman in the front group. However, yet another increase in pace saw the bunch split even further in the crosswinds with only Eekhoff left in the main peloton.
A group of 13 escaped at that point but the peloton soon got organised and brought back their one minute gap within the final ten kilometres, setting up a fast finale. In the sprint Eekhoff started his effort a little far back, ending the day with a solid ninth place after what was a hard day of racing.
“It was controlled for quite a long time today but then on the climb after 125 kilometres the race completely exploded,” explained Eekhoff at the finish. “The pace stayed high afterwards and there were even echelons. I managed to make it the main group of around 35 riders after the guys did some good work and in the end it was a sprint finish. I came up a bit short in the finale after starting my effort from a little too far back but I’m satisfied with the ninth place.”
Team Sunweb coach Sebastian Deckert added: “It was quiet today until the climbs where it split. On the top of some of the climbs it was windy and the race split even more and we had Nils in the main front group. In the last ten kilometres they caught the breakaway and the day ended in a reduced bunch sprint where Nils finished in the top ten. It was a solid race for us, with some good teamwork and now we’re looking forward to some recovery before the last race of the year at Paris-Tours.”
