The race: Here's the report from second-place Christoph Pfingsten's Bora-hansgrohe team.
The 103rd edition of the one-day race “Rund um Köln” took place today in the city of Cologne with an undulating 206 km course. BORA – hansgrohe came with previous winner Sam Bennett trying to defend his title.
After around 50 km of constant attacking from the peloton, 16 riders formed the day’s break. Andreas Schillinger and Christoph Pfingsten represented the BORA – hansgrohe colours in this group, which was later joined by last year’s winner Sam Bennett. The large breakaway with all three BORA – hansgrohe riders in, worked well together and opened up a gap of more than five minutes.
With 20 km remaining the leading group fell apart, Andreas Schillinger and Christoph Pfingsten were able to stay up front heading into the final laps, while Bennett was unfortunately distanced.
As the race headed into the final laps Christoph Pfingsten launched an attack out of the group and led the race together with another rider. On the final lap the leading duo had a gap of 40 seconds and almost one minute with 5 km remaining. In an exciting finale, the BORA – hansgrohe rider opened his sprint first, but was beaten to the line and finished in a strong second place. Teammate Andreas Schillinger finished 5th and Sam Bennett crossed the line in 10th place.

“Of course, I wanted to take the win and I was close to, maybe I started my sprint too early, however, I am super happy with my result. We went into today’s race to defend the title. The race saw many attacks and was pretty fast. Shortly before the finish, there was another selection and I was able to go with the other riders. After that, being at the front there was only one option: All or nothing. With my second place, now I am looking forward to my next race, the Critérium du Dauphiné.” – Christoph Pfingsten
“We have seen attacks right from the start. With three guys in the breakaway we took control over the pace all the time. With 20 km remaining, the group fell apart after some attacks and we had Schilli and Pfingsti in, Sam was back in the chasing group. Christoph was able to launch another attack and opened up a gap together with Planckaert. In the final sprint Planckaert paid attention and took the win. Nevertheless, I think we showed once again a great team effort and the second place is a really good result.” – André Schulze, Sports Director
