Men's race: Siena - Siena, 184 km
11 sections of white roads, totalling 63 km
Julian Alaphilippe gets a clear win in Siena.
Weather at the start/finish city of Siena at 1:20 PM, local time: 17C (62F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 18 km/hr (11mph). No rain is forecast
The race: 147 riders began the race at 10:40. 147 starters, 83 riders finished within the time limit.
Here's the race summary from winner Julian Alaphilippe's Deceuninck-Quick Step team.
One of the most thrilling and spectacular one-day races of the year, Strade Bianche has a new winner in the name of Julian Alaphilippe, who resumed competition after a high-altitude training camp in Colombia and picked up where he left off, surging to his fourth victory of what’s shaping up to be an outstanding campaign for the 26-year-old, now in his sixth season with Deceuninck – Quick-Step.
“My start to the season was already good, with three wins in South America, but to win here is incredible! My team did a great job and having Yves and Zdenek together with me in the final was perfect for us. I had a good day and strong legs, but was also lucky not to have any crashes or punctures. Strade Bianche was my first big goal of the year, and to win here, at my very first presence, is truly amazing”, said Alaphilippe after becoming the first Frenchman to conquer the Italian World Tour race.
Strade Bianche played totally to our team’s strength, which had again the numbers inside the last 50 kilometers, when Julian Alaphilippe, Belgian Champion Yves Lampaert and Omloop Het Nieuwsblad victor Zdenek Stybar made the cut over the Martino in Grania dirt road sector, part of a 16-man group. Strangely, it was on Monteaparti, at 800 meters, the shortest gravel segment in the race, that the winning move took shape, when Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) accelerated, being joined only by Julian and Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma).
The trio traded turns until the steep Colle Pinzuto, where the Belgian was dropped, leaving at the front only Alaphilippe and Fuglsang, who traded turns and worked well together, opening a one-minute gap over the main chasing group, where Lampaert and Stybar continued to do a magnificent job in chasing down attacks. Just before Via Esterna di Fontebranda, on the outskirts of Siena, Van Aert bridged to the leading duo, but only for a brief moment.
On Via Santa Caterina, the Dane tried to put Julian on the ropes, but Deceuninck – Quick-Step’s pocket-rocket climber responded with ease, before getting out of the saddle and putting in an explosive attack on the 16% gradients, coming round and dispatching his opponent, thus ensuring he would go first into the final corners of the race.
Alaphilippe took his small gap onto the downhill finishing stretch in the stunning Piazza del Campo, where he celebrated his fourth victory of the season and delivering another perfect day for Deceuninck – Quick-Step, who placed three more riders in the top 15 – Zdenek Stybar (4th), Yves Lampaert (11th) and Pieter Serry (13th) – maintaining a tight grip on the World Team Classification.
“In every race, others are looking at us to take the responsibility, and that’s what we did today. We were with three riders in the main selection, controlled every move and did a really smart race in all the key moments. When Fuglsang went, I knew that might be the winning move. He was very strong today, but I made no mistakes and remained confident, although it wasn’t until the final corner that I believed I could win this race, in my opinion, one of the toughest of the calendar. It’s a wonderful victory, one which makes me extremely happy and boosts my confidence ahead of Tirreno-Adriatico”, concluded Julian after netting Deceuninck – Quick-Step’s third win at Strade Bianche.

Siena - Siena, 136 km
Annemiek van Vleuten wins the women's Strade Bianche.
The race: Here's the summary from winner Annemiek van Vleuten's Mitchelton-Scott team.
Dual world time trial champion Annemiek van Vleuten put on a stunning display to win a punishing Strade Bianche in just her second race back from injury. The 36-year-old powered away from a select group of favourites on the final gravel sector and managed to open up an advantage to stay away solo to the finish in Siena.
The win is the Dutchwoman’s first victory since a serious knee injury suffered during the 2018 UCI Road Race World Championships.
It was a fast start to proceedings as the peloton rolled out of Siena and it wasn’t until the first gravel sector of the day that a group of four managed to edge clear. However, by the time the bunch had passed over the following off-road section, it was all back together.
The fourth sector of ‘white roads’ saw a number of gaps occur as the pace increased, but again the splits were short-lived and the race was back together as they passed through the feedzone.
As the peloton moved onto the longest off-road section of the race, Australian Amanda Spratt was caught in a crash and was forced to abandon after taking a knock to the head in the fall.
It was then a case of attack after attack as number riders, including Lucy Kennedy, dangled ahead of the reduced bunch but were quickly reeled back in.
By the time the race hit the final sector of gravel, a select group of 11 had managed to break clear with Van Vleuten amongst them.
Van Vleuten then made her move over the steep climb, as the off-road sectors ended and the run to the finish began. She quickly opened up a gap of 30 seconds and with no organised chase behind, the gap grew to 40 seconds as the climb to Piazza del Campo came into sight.
As the climb began, it was obvious that there was no catching Van Vleuten and the winner of the 2018 Women’s WorldTour had time to sit up and celebrate as she crossed the line.
Annemiek van Vleuten:
“I thought it was maybe a bit too early because I’ve just had 10 weeks of training after I broke my knee at the world championships. But I worked very, very hard because the race was on my wish list to win one time, it’s one of my favourite races.”
“I just waited for a good moment (to attack), there was only one teammate with me, only Lucy Kennedy, and it was really good for us to be there together but we were a bit outnumbered. We were only two in a big group so we had to poker a bit, then I thought I had to put the hammer down on the uphill!”
“It’s one of my best victories, to win here, I said yesterday when we had a picture here in the Piazza del Campo, I think it’s the best way to finish a race here.”
“It is an interesting course with limited time trial kilometres and some very high passes, which have not been seen before in the Tour de France. I like the route and avoiding Western France makes that first week a little less tense. We are in the mountains quite early and with a team time trial day two we will certainly see the lay of the land quite early in proceedings.”

Here's the organizer's course description:
The route offers a mostly varied and wavy landscape, in termsof both course and profile, with no extended climbs, but with a series of more or less steep spurts, especially on unpaved roads. The route features about 63 km of unpaved road over 11 different segments (8 of which are in common with the women’s race), with a roadbed in good conditions, well-packed ground with no grass invasion, and a little gravel on the surface.
The race starts from Siena (near the stadium/FortezzaMedicea). The first kilometres on wavy and asphalted terrain lead to the first gravel sector (2.1 km), perfectly straight and slightly downhill, at km 18. The second sector (5.8 km) is just a few kilometres away; this will be the first tricky bit of the race, with a short and slightly downhill stretch, followed by a long climb with gradients around 10% and above.
After hitting Radi, the route takes in the third sector (4.4 km, namely the second part of the first white road stretch of the original route) and the fourth one (“La Piana”, 5.5 km, which has been featured since the first edition, and used to be the former second sector of the original route), less demanding and leading to Buonconvento.
The Montalcino climb, the second ascent of the day (4 km, 5% gradient), is just a few kilometres away. The 5th and 6th sectors (11.9 km and 8.0 km, respectively) begin just past Torrenieri, with only 1 km on paved road in-between. Both segments are demanding, wavy and bumpy, with several bends, climbs and descents.
The fixed feed zone is set around Ponte d’Arbia, after the second passage through Buonconvento; the route then reaches Monteroni d’Arbia, where the 7th dirt-road sector begins (San Martino in Grania, 9.5 km), across the unique scenery of the Crete Senesi hills. This is a long sector, marked by gentle climbs and descents in the first part, and ending with a long, curving climb that leads back to paved road. The 8th white road segment (11.5 km, the hardest of the whole race) begins in Ponte del Garbo (Asciano). It is mainly uphill, and marked by major climbs and descents, including the one near Monte Sante Marie, that reach sharp gradients very quickly, both upand downhill (on short distances).
The route then features a very short, flat, unpaved sector (300 m) past Castelnuovo Berardenga, followed by the ninth, short dirt-road sector, after Monteaperti, which measures only 800 m in length but features two-digit gradients. The route goes back on paved road in Vico d’Arbia and Pieve a Bozzone, then takes in the tenth and penultimate segment (2.4 km) on the steep Colle Pinzuto climb (with gradients peaking as high as 15%).
After a few kilometres, the route features the eleventh and last dirt-road segment (1.1 km), marked by a fast-running descent and followed by a punchy climb (max gradient: 18%), ending in Le Tolfe. The finish in Siena, in Piazza del Campo, is a little more than 12 km away
