Weather at the finish city of Segovia at 1:35 PM, local time: 29C (85F), sunny, with the wind from the southwest at 21 km/hr (14 mph). There is a 6% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from winner Eduardo Sepulveda's Lotto Dstny team:

Lotto Dstny rider Eduardo Sepulveda has seized control over the Vuelta a Castilla y Léon. In the final of stage two, the Argentinean attacked together with the Spaniard Castrillo. The duo managed to stay ahead of the chasing group and it was Sepulveda who proved the strongest in the sprint. Not only did the Argentinean take the stage win, he also won the overall classification. Teammate Harry Sweeny finished on place four on GC.

"I almost can’t believe it to win the stage and general classification. It was a really hard race and in the final 30 kilometres there were lots of attacks. I guess I was maybe a bit lucky that I went on the right moment and had a good breakaway companion with Castrillo. Although we worked together well, I thought the group would still catch us, but in the end it was enough and to win the stage and GC is just fantastic."

Just before the stage start.

Here is a picture of the peloton riding by the ancient aqueduct in Segovia. It was built in the first century and incredibly, was used until 1973.

Wednesday, July 26: Stage 1, Soria - Soria, 168.9 km

Stage 1 profile

Felix Engelhardt wins the first stage.

Bicycle HistoryJames Witherell's book Bicycle History: A Chronological History of People, Races and Technology is available in both print and Kindle eBook formats. To get your copy just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the start/finish city of Soria at 1:50 PM, loal time: 24C (75F), sunny, with the wind from the south-southwest at 5 km/hr (3 mph). No rain is forecast.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Felix Engelhardt's Team Jayco-AlUla.

Team Jayco AlUla celebrated a victorious start to the two-day Vuelta a Castilla y Leon with a win for Felix Engelhardt, who battled through a tough finish to win a sprint from a reduced bunch on stage one.

The young German rider, who in his debut season with the team has already scored a notable win back in March with a strong ride at the one-day Per Sempre Alfredo, took up the fight for the victory in the finale of the opening stage in Spain after a strong effort from the team.

With an uphill push before a fast slope down into the finish line, the team stretched the leading group to breaking point, leaving Engelhardt and another three riders to go head-to-head for the win.

The 22-year-old showed his class with a powerful sprint which he launched from the front, and his strength was more than enough to hold off the challenge of his rivals for the win.

Along with the victory, Engelhardt also takes the general classification leader’s jersey into the second and final day of the race.

Felix Engelhardt:
“It was bit unexpected, we’re here with Michael Matthews who is arguably the strongest rider in the peloton. So we were working all day long, mainly with him as the focus. But after he had a crash yesterday (at Prueba Villafranca) and didn’t feel that great in the final, we said we’d go for me. It also suited me quite well.

"The team did an amazing job. We were first over the bridge and into the final climb, and then I still had one team-mate to pull. Then he pulled off and I knew it was now or never. I needed to go, because if you lose the momentum then you never get going.

"I felt really good, and then I had to take the sprint from the front so I thought I needed to go a bit earlier, otherwise I’d get swamped from behind, because it’s quite a fast final. I think everybody had the same feeling and was on the limit for the last couple of hundred metres, and it worked out.”

Rafa Valls (Sport Director):
“The guys did an amazing job all day long. We were working for Michael (Matthews) but in the final we had to switch the plan and go with Felix, and he was super strong. His instinct was spot on and he made the right moves at the perfect moments.

"We knew it would be really important inside the final 5km for positioning, and all the guys rode superbly to make it happen.”
