Stage 5, Saturday, January 23: Jayco Stage 5, Snapper Point - Willunga, 148 km

The race: Stage 5 had 2 ascents up Old Willunga Hill. The first time up the pack caught a 7-man break. The day's drama occurred on the second visit to Old Willunga. A break of 4—Cadel Evans, Luis Leon Sanchez, Alejandro Valverde and Peter Sagan—formed and proceeded to pound out a 37-second lead on the pack, making Evans the race's virtual leader. Over the remaining kilometers HTC-Columbia steadily wiped out the gap. Sanchez jumped, eluding the fast-closing pack and won the stage. But Greipel's squad had saved the day for the big German who remains the overall leader.

Caisse d'Epargne celebrates Sanchez's stage win.

Stage 4, Friday, January 22: Mutual Community Stage, Norwood - Goolwa, 149.5 km.

The Race: It was a windy day that caused gaps in the peloton by the end of the race. A 7-man break played in the wind for much of the day but Columbia wasn't going to let anyone spoil their party. At one point Lance Armstrong and Tomas Vaitkus (both Radio Shack) dangled a bit off the front but in the end it was a day for the sprinters and for now that means Andre Greipel.

Results:

1. Andre Greipel (HTC-Columbia) 3hr 30min 29sec. 42.616 km/hr
2. Robbie McEwen (Katusha) s.t.

As usual, the day's break was caught well before the finish.

Note the HTC-Columbia jerseys clustered at the front of the chasing peloton.

Sky still hasn't figured out how to crack the Columbia nut.

Tomas Vaitkus leads Lance Armstrong across the line.

Stage 3, Thursday, January 21: Unley - Sterling, 132.5 km

The race: Today's stage was on a hillier course with an uphill finish, as you can see in the picture above. A break of 5 had promise (Jens Voigt, Karsten Kroon, Jack Bobridge, Maciej Paterski and Simon Clarke) but Caisse d'Epargne, with several riders who should do well on a finish like this, especially Alejandro Valderde, was having none of it. The pack was brought together and everything was perfect for a Valverde victory except that Manuel Cardoso, the Portugese road champion, took off and everyone hesitated for just a moment.

Results:

1. Manuel Cardoso (Footon-Servetto) 3hr 14min 38sec. 40.846 km/hr
2. Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne) @ 1sec

And here's Caisse d'Epargne hunting them down.

Here's another view of the finish. Valverde looks back while Cardoso celebrates.

And here's thrid-place Evans crossing the line.

This is a shameless attempt to get viewers for this site by posting a cute animal picture.

Stage 2, Wednesday, January 20: Gawler - Hahndorf, 133.5 km

The race: A 3-man break got away for a tour of the Australian countryside. But with less than 10 km to go Austraia's David Kemp and Omega Pharma-Lotto riders Mickael Delage and Olivier Kaisen were caught by a Sky- and Columbia-led peloton. And again, Sky could not crack the Columbia code to getting Andre Greipel across the line first.

Results:

1. Andre Greipel (HTC-Columbia) 3hr 23min 49sec. 39.3 km/hr
2. Greg Henderson (Sky) s.t.

The day's break, which was caught with the usual 10 km to go. Australia's David Kemp is part of an Omega Pharma-Lotto sandwich of Mickael Delage and Olivier Kaisen.

HTC-Columbia team boss Bob Stapleton with his speedster Andre Greipel.

Stage 1, Tuesday, January 19: Clare - Tanuda, 141 km.

The race: A big crash within the first kilometer marred the race's start. A break of 3 riders, Biel Kadri (Ag2r), Martin Kohler (BMC) and Tim Roe (Australia) got away, extending their lead to almost 10 minutes. Hungry for a win after getting slammed in the Down Under Classic on Sunday, HTC-Columbia brought the race back together. As is clear from the picture above, Andre Greipel was easily the fastest in the sprint. Score one for Sky, one for Columbia.

Results:

1. Andre Greipel (HTC-Columbia) 3hr 15min 30sec. 43.273 km/hr

A break of three managed to get a gap of almost 10 minutes before being caught with 20 km to go. From the left: Biel Kadri (Ag2r), Martin Kohler (BMC) and Tim Roe (Australia).

Here's what brought the trio back to the pack, HTC-Columbia. I think that's Bert Grabsch leading.

Armstrong after the finish. Look how short and shallow the handlebar reach is of the obscured rider's bike just to Armstrong's right. That's a far cry from a set of Cinelli 66-44's like Merckx used in the old days.

Sunday, January 17: Cancer Council Helpline Classic, 51 km circuit race. 30 x 1.7 km laps. East End, Adelaide. The race is billed as a preview of stage 6 of the Tour Down Under. It does not count towards the TDU General Classification.

The Race: Midway thorugh the race a 5-man break was established: Lance Armstrong (Radio Shack), Oscar Pereiro (Astana), Peter Sagan (Liquigas), Mathieu Perget (Caisse d'Epargne) and Mikael Cherel (FDJ). Near the end HTC-Columbia went to the front and shut it down. Just as everyone thought it would be another Columbia rout, Sky's leadout train hit it hard and delivered Henderson to the front.

78. Cadel Evans (BMC) @ 23sec
99. Oscar Pereiro (Astana) s.t.

Robbie McEwen heads for the start.

Eight Tour wins in that break. Oscar Pereiro (Tour winner in 2006) and Lance Armstrong (winner of just about every other Tour) shake things up.

HTC-Columbia hits the front.

Cadel Evans will be easy to pick out all year.

Team Katusha

Like to know what that power meter is reading when Armstrong is on a break.

Here are the boys who won the first big race they entered. I can't wait for a head to head at a race between Sky and Columbia when Columbia has Cavendish.
