Weather at Geneva, Switzerland at 1:30 PM, local time: 22C (72F), fair, with the wind from the north at 8 km/hr (5 mph). Rain is unlikely before the race finish. Thunderstorms are possible at 7:00 PM.
The race: Here's the report from stage winner Pascal Ackermann's Bora-hansgrohe team.
Pascal Ackermann prevailed on the last stage of the Tour de Romandie to collect his first professional victory. Due to the relatively straightforward profile of today’s stage, it was expected that the yellow jersey of P. Roglic would not be put in significant danger today. All eyes were therefore on the sprinters. With Pascal, BORA-hansgrohe had a good chance of a top position on today’s stage and the young rider didn’t disappoint. His teammate Emanuel Buchmann was able to successfully defend his 9th position in the overall standings.
The Stage
A 182km-long stage from Mont-sur-Rolle to Geneva concluded this year’s Tour de Romandie. With three Category 3 climbs in the first half of the race, the stage presented undulating terrain. However, with the flat finale it was likely that the sprinters would have their day today.
The Team Tactics
The fifth stage was one for the fast men. Because everything pointed towards a sprint finish in Geneva, our plan was to concentrate on our sprint. Pascal Ackermann, who has consistently shown great form throughout the season so far, would have a good chance if it came to a fast finish. The team therefore tried to ensure that the race was capped off with a bunch sprint and aimed to bring Pascal into an optimal position in the finishing straight for the anticipated finale. In Rudi Selig, Pascal had a strong lead-out man for the finish, who would hopefully be able to assist the young German sprinter to a solid result today.
The Race
Almost immediately after the start, 5 riders took their chance to form the breakaway of the day, and after 25km they had managed to carve out an advantage of 3 minutes, while LottoNL-Jumbo took over responsibility for setting the pace in the main field. At the foot of the last categorised climb of the day, BORA-hansgrohe, together with Bahrain Merida, set the tempo at the front of the peloton, and the gap to the break began to come down.
With 30km remaining until the finish, BORA-hansgrohe put down the hammer on the slightly downhill stretch into Geneva, and the escapees’ lead was whittled down quite quickly as they were in the sights of the chasing peloton. The breakaway was caught by the speeding field with 11km left to race, at which point the sprinters’ trains began to get themselves into formation. After a strong job by Rudi Selig to bring Pascal into an excellent position from which to launch himself for the final, the young German sprinter raced across the finish line to celebrate the first professional victory of his career.
From the Finish Line
“The guys worked hard to support me the whole day, and in the end Rudi Selig brought me into the perfect position in the last 200m. I am very thankful for all the hard work of my teammates. It was a real goal of ours to win today and we achieved this. The race has not been easy and it was difficult for me to stay within the time limit on the penultimate stage. So it is nice to see that our hard work paid off.” – Pascal Ackermann
“The team worked well today for Pascal. Our plan was to bring him in a good position for the sprint. He fought to stay within the time limit yesterday, but he was very motivated and today his hard work paid dividends. The team put its trust in him and everyone was willing to do their best for him. In addition, we can also be very happy with Emanuel Buchmann’s top 10 result in the general classification. For our team, it has been a successful week.” – Steffen Radochla, Sport Director
“I’m very satisfied with my 9th place in the general classification. The race was tough this year, and a top 10 result is a good achievement. I think this race shows that I have good form, and I’m confident heading into my next races. It was nice to see Pascal take the win today in Geneva. We worked the whole day for him and it’s a great way to finish the Tour de Romandie.” – Emanuel Buchmann
“It’s great to be back with the team at Tour de Romandie and to return to the racing environment. My condition is ok at the moment, but we still have a lot of work to do. The race here in Switzerland has been hard, but I’ve managed to get through the stages quite ok and have been able to assist the team wherever I can. This race is never an easy one, and hopefully it will provide me with the legs I need to move my form to the next level.
"After the Tour de Romandie, I’ll race Eschborn-Frankfurt, and then I’ll have some easier days before heading to the team training camp in Austria. This will hopefully allow me to get some good work done heading towards the Critérium du Dauphiné, where I think I will be in a lot better shape and can hopefully be more involved in the racing and even try for some results. After the Dauphiné, I’ll target the national championships, and I’ll also use the Dauphiné to decide with the team if I’ll go to the Tour de France or not.” – Peter Kennaugh

Jakob Fuglsang wins stage four. Sirotti photo.
Weather at Sion at 1:30 PM, local time: 24C (76F), partly cloudy with the wind from the North at 8 km/hr (5 mph). No rain is forecast until 6:00 PM.
The race: Here's the report from stage winner Jakob Fuglsang's Team Astana.
After an impressive attack in the final 15 kilometers of today’s Queen Stage, Jakob Fuglsang finished his solo with his first victory in 2018, already the 15th victory of the season for Astana Pro Team.
- I already tried to attack at the final climb, but going downhill I had to chase and close the gap with the leaders. But luckily halfway the downhill the road went up a little bit and at that point my sports director Dmitriy Fofonov was screaming at me: “Now is the moment!”, but I responded that I was already racing at my limit. But just after that moment I was in the perfect position, just behind the group that was mostly looking at each other, and so I took my chance. I’m really happy with this victory, it gives a really good feeling and a lot of confidence for the start of my preparations for the Tour de France in a few weeks,- said Jakob Fuglsang.
Today was the Queen Stage of the 2018 Tour de Romandie, a 149km-long stage starting and finishing in Sion. With three climbs of the 1stcategory and two of the 2ndcat., the riders had a hard day on the bike.
At the first four climbs, the peloton was chasing a breakaway of five riders, while from the same peloton more and more riders got dropped as the GC contenders started to pull. At the start of the final climb, the breakaway was caught and it all came down to a small group of riders. Jakob Fuglsang attacked, but got caught and had to chase the four leaders from that point all the way to the top of the climb. In the descent, Fuglsang was able to get back in the leading group. And with 15 kilometers to go, he attacked for a solo finish in the streets of Sion.
With his stage victory, Jakob Fuglsang climbed to the 4th place in the General Classification, 1’16” behind leader Primoz Roglic. Tomorrow will be the final stage of this Tour de Romandie, going from Mont-sur-Rolle to Geneva (181km).

Weather at Villars at 2:20 PM, local time: 14C (58F), sunny, with the wind from the SW at 13 km/hr (8 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: Stage winner Egan Bernal's Team Sky posted this report.
Egan Bernal powered to an impressive victory on the stage three hill climb time trial at the Tour de Romandie.
The Colombian clocked an unbeatable marker of 25 minutes and 10 seconds on the constant uphill drag to Villars, taking his first WorldTour win by four seconds to climb into second place overall.
Only three riders were able to finish within a minute of Bernal, who got quicker across the 9.9-kilometre course, overhauling the time of Richie Porte (BMC Racing), before holding off race leader Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo).
He now sits just six seconds off Roglic’s yellow jersey ahead of the race’s queen stage on Saturday, while simultaneously tightening his grip on the young rider’s jersey.
Jonathan Castroviejo was the next Team Sky rider home, clocking the 16th fastest time on his birthday. The stage played a key role in the general classification, with Castroviejo, Diego Rosa and Geraint Thomas all sliding out of the top 10 on the day.

Thursday, April 26: Stage 2, Delémont - Yverdon les Bains, 173.9 km
Thomas de Gendt wins stage two in style.
Weather at the finish city of Yverdon les Bains at 2:45 PM, local time: 16C (61F), partly cloudy with the wind from the WNW at 8 km/hr (5 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: Stage winner Thomas de Gendt's Lotto-Soudal team sent me this report:
One month after his memorable stage win at Volta a Catalunya, Thomas De Gendt has conquered another magnificent victory. This time he soloed to victory on the second stage of Tour de Romandie!
Pretty soon after the start of the stage in Delémont five riders escaped the bunch; among those riders Victor Campenaerts and Thomas De Gendt. The Lotto Soudal duo was accompanied by Nathan Brown, Matteo Fabbro and Andriy Grivko. The break got more than seven minutes advantage. After first Fabbro had been distanced due to a mechanical, Grivko was dropped uphill; that way only Brown was left at the side of Campenaerts and De Gendt.
A few kilometres after the first crossing of the finish line in Yverdon-les-Bains, which was the start of one lap of 34.3 kilometres, Campenaerts had to let go of his companions. About five kilometres further De Gendt left Brown behind. The peloton was no threat anymore by that time. De Gendt finished solo, with 2’04” advantage over Sonny Colbrelli who beat Samuel Dumoulin in the sprint for the second place. After today’s breakaway De Gendt is the new owner of the sprint jersey, and he was also awarded the prize of the most combative rider of the day.
Thomas De Gendt: “I did arrive solo at the finish today, but this victory is also the merit of Victor. He went out of his way to make sure I had as much advantage as possible. Originally it was our plan to warm up the legs for tomorrow’s time trial. Our advantage kept rising and that was mainly due to the work of Victor and me, because our companions didn’t go full. During the climb at less than seventy kilometres from the end, Victor told me we would draw my card.”
“I felt very good today and when we had almost eight minutes advantage, I felt it was possible to win. We definitely didn’t just get that lead from the bunch, that was all our own merit. When we had about three minutes advantage, the peloton wanted to start controlling the gap and still we got more and more advantage. I definitely wanted to aim for six minutes lead. We kept on riding full gas and didn’t give up, we just would see where it would take us. And it turned out well. I hear that they rode very fast in the bunch and still I had two minutes advantage left at the finish.”
“As soon as I feel the victory is within reach I want to keep up my own pace. After Victor had done a few last pulls, he got distanced in the local lap. Brown was still making a good impression and I wanted to test him. I immediately got a small gap and I decided to continue on my own, even though it was still a long way to the finish. We had done a recon of the local lap on Monday, so I knew what was coming. At that moment I still had about three minutes advantage, enough to remain ahead. I knew I didn’t need to go full anymore, but because of the headwind and the long break the way to the finish was still long.”
“I had made a goal of this Tour de Romandie. I chose not to ride the Ardennes Classics to be fresh for this race. In the past I never had a good feeling here and I wanted to change that. Last week I went on a training camp and that way I prepared for this race. I am in excellent shape. It’s nice for the team that we could also win a stage in this WorldTour race. I’ll see tomorrow how I feel for the time trial. Today was already a four-hour time trial for me (laughs). If all goes well I can end up on top twenty tomorrow, I have more chances in the stages this weekend.”

Omar Fraile wins stage one.
Weather at the finish city of Delémont at 3:30 PM, local time: 22C (71F), partly cloudy with the wind from the west at 24 km/hr (15 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: Here's the stage story from winner Omar Fraile's Team Astana.
Omar Fraile took a nice victory today at stage 1 of the Tour de Romandie with the finish in Delémont. The Astana Team rider won the final sprint from a group of race favorites, outsprinting the Italian Sonny Colbrelli and the Portuguese rider Rui Costa.
- I am so happy with this win. After the classics I did not feel great, but today everything went well and I managed to do a good stage. In general, our team was super today, we did a strong race. After all these climbs we still had many riders in the leading group and my teammates did a big job for me. In the final part of the stage I’ve realized our group can come to the finish for a sprint, so Dario Cataldo and Jakob Fuglsang worked hard to chase all attacks and to bring me in front. I knew, Sonny Colbrelli was my biggest rival today since he is a very fast guy. So, I followed his wheel and started my sprint with around 300 meters to go. It was a good decision, since at the last 100 meters there was a small uphill. Anyway, this victory brings me and, I think, the whole team a good motivation before the next stages. As I saw, Jakob is in a good form and we will try to help him to reach a high result here, - explained Omar Fraile after finish.
After yesterday’s prologue, today the peloton has started the first normal stage from Fribourg to Delémont with a total distance of 166,6 km. In this nice day in Switzerland, the riders passed a hilly route with four categorized climbs, the last one with just 18 km to go.
The French Alexis Gougeard was the last rider from the early break to be caught already in the final few kilometers. There were a number of attacks from the leading group of 55 riders inside the last 3-4 km, but finally, all the favorites came together to the finish line in Delémont. Omar Fraile did a smart move in front of the group to attack with just 300 meters to go and to take his second win this season after a nice success at the 5th stage of the Itzulia Basque Country.
Tanel Kangert, Jakob Fuglsang, Jesper Hansen and Dario Cataldo all finished inside the first leading group.
After the prologue and today’s stage 1 the Slovenian Primoz Roglic took the lead in the general classification of the Tour de Romandie. Omar Fraile is, provisionally, the best Astana rider, sitting on the 22nd place in the overall, 19 seconds behind the leader.

Michael Matthews going faster than anyone else.
Weather at Fribourg at 3:00 PM local time: 21C (70F), sunny, with the wind from the west at 11 km/hr (7 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: Here is what winner Michael Matthews' Team Sunweb posted after the stage:
After navigating his way across the 4 kilometre route in Fribourg, tacking the technical cornering and climbs to perfection, Michael set the fastest time at the intermediate time check, later going on to secure the stage victory.
REACTIONS
Speaking of the win Michael said: “I had a rocky start to the season and things were difficult with my broken shoulder but I finally feel like things are on the up again. I didn’t know how well I would feel after the weekend but I gave my best and I’m really pleased that I could finish it off with the win. It was a beautiful course and I had a lot of fun out there today; I really enjoy TT’s, especially ones like these where I can use my power. Tonight we’ll just enjoy this win and tomorrow we’ll focus on what we’re going to do next.”
Team Sunweb coach Tom Veelers added: “It was a well deserved win after a period of bad luck in the opening parts of the season. After a recon and analysis from our scientific expert we had a specific, solid plan of how to tackle the course. Michael was technically good on the corners and strong on the climbs and was really determined to take the win today. This is a great boost for morale and a good opening to our Tour de Romandie. In the coming days we will continue to search for results with the strong team that we have here.”
