The Race: World time trial champion Tony Martin took the first stage and the overall leadership with a superb ride over a technical and hilly course. It is Martin's intention to repeat his Tour of Belgium performance where he took the lead in the time trial (stage 3 in the Belgian tour) and held it to the end. What makes Martin's ride particularly impressive was that Martin rode cautiously over the difficult course, afraid of crashing.

There were a few surprises in today's results. Bradley Wiggins was a distant 14th, 32 seconds off Martin's pace and Fabian Cancellara, still suffering from the effects of a training crash last week, was fourth, at 16 seconds.

Tomorrow Martin will get a real test of his desire to keep the lead. The mountainous stage has two hors category ascents, the Gothard and the Furka.
