Final overall winner Cameron Meyer

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

The Race: Cameron Meyer proved himself a superb racer by winning the 2015 Herald Sun Tour. Having won the Tour Down Under in 2011, Meyer joins Stuart O'Grady and Simon Gerrans in having won both important Australian stage races.

The stage had an 86 km loop before three ascents of the Arthur's Seat climb, which rises to 18% at one place. Some members of the original break of 13 riders survived the second time up, but they were all captured before the third ascent to the hilltop finish.

Twenty riders were in the front group on the final time up the hill, but they broke up near the top. Cameron Meyer and Simon Clarke gained a slight gap near the top and were then joined by Patrick Bevin, who won the stage. That gave Meyer second place for the stage and the overall win.

Tour de France: the Inside Story

The Race: A group of 58 riders contested the sprint to win stage three after absorbing the last riders of a break with four kilometers to go.

William Clark was hoping to get the jump on the quickest riders of the bunch by going a bit early. But, it was impossible to stay away from the fast-moving large group.

Sam Bewley of Orica-GreenEdge gave teammate Caleb Ewan a powerful leadout which Ewan did not waste. Ewan won the stage while GC leader Cameron Meyer finished in the same front group, nineteenth, to maintain his overall leadership.

This has been Orica-GreenEdge's race. They have won stages 1, 2 and 3, missing only the prologue to have won every stage of this year's edition and currently have the the GC lead as well.

Bicycle History

The Race: With the stage about 40 kilometers old, three riders escaped: Tyler Farrar, Michael Cumming and Will Clarke.

This was a determined trio that grew their gap to nearly three minutes. The break lasted most of the stage, with the three escapees still a minute ahead of the field with twenty kilometers remaining. But, it was not to be, with the escapees captured close to the finish.

With the peloton largely intact, Orica-GreenEdge's Caleb Ewan was the fastest man in the pack today. Ewan won the stage. But, just as Ewan was raising his hands in victory, a crash was happening on his left. Brenton Jones (Drapac) tangled with Sam Witmiz (Budget Forklifts), as you can see in the photo above. While Jones went down, Witmitz stayed upright and finished third, behind Steele von Hoff.

Cameron Meyer retained his overall race lead.

Cameron Meyer wins stage one

Cameron Meyer wins stage 1

The Race: After just four kilometers into the stage, the riders had to go up. Up Mount Macedon, to be exact, and that climb produced a lead group of just twenty-one riders.

By the time this elite group reached the second KOM, about two-thirds into the stage, the chasing riders had given up and were more than twelve minutes behind the leaders.

With about ten kilometers remaining, Cameron Meyer (Orica-GreenEdge) and Joseph Cooper (Avanti) were able to get away from the front group. They built a slender lead which they were able to hold to the end, with Meyer winning the sprint for the stage victory. The main peloton finished more than 25 minutes later.

With the time gap and the bonus time he earned while on the break, Cameron Meyer (three-time world points race champion) became the overall leader.

After the race Meyer had this to say, “There was lots of attacks in the end and I just had to bide my time for the right move and I love that sort of race,” he explained. “Twenty guys just like it used to be on the track with the points race and trying to judge when to make the move and I made the right one.”

“I brought an Avanti guy [with me] which was perfect and he didn’t want to give me a turn in the last 10km which I got a little bit angry with, but I still managed to have enough in the end to win so I’m really happy.”

Results: Winner's average speed: 41.8 km/hr

Will Clarke enjoys his time trial win

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

The Race: There were about 20,000 people on site to watch the Sun Tour's prologue, held late in the day. Twenty-nine year old William Clarke hammered the 2.1 kilometer course to take the stage and the first leader's jersey. Clarke was third in the race's opening time trial last year.

“I’ve been thinking about it for twelve months so I’ve had a bit of time to go over it and figure out where to make up a bit of ground,” Clarke said.

Orica-GreenEdge rider Caleb Ewan was less than a second (before rounding) slower the Clarke, to take second place. Drapac had a fabulous day with Brenton Jones finishing third, giving the team first and third places for the day.

Defending champion Simon Clarke finished seventh, at two seconds.
