Weather at the finish city of Luxembourg at 1:45 PM, local time: 14C (57F), showers in the area, with the wind from the northwest at 21 km/hr (13 mph). There is a 60% - 80% chance of rain during the afternoon.
The race: Thee were two non-starters: Hugo Hofstetter (Arkea-Samsic) & Tim Torn Teutenberg (Leopard Pro). That should leave a starting peloton of 104 riders.
Here's the report from GC winner Mattias Skjelmose's Team Trek-Segafredo:
Mattias Skjelmose and his teammates successfully defended a precarious three-second lead in Stage 5 of the Skoda Tour of Luxembourg to win the general classification of the five-day race.
“I am super happy! I am 21, I turn 22 later this month, and it’s a really big race for me. Tomorrow I go to the World Championships and I don’t think you could have a better preparation than this, so yeah, I’m super happy,” exclaimed Skjelmose.
“I think we did a really good job as a team to control it and limited to what I had to do until the last climb. When it’s so steep it’s all about the legs, and luckily mine were good today.”
After a four-man breakaway was contained in the ending kilometers and a late antagonist tagged back, the bonus seconds on the line posed the biggest threat to Skjelmose.
The young Dane needed to be attentive in the final uphill sprint as Kévin Vauquelin was only three seconds in arrears. With 10, 6, and 4 seconds on the line for the top three places, the best defense for Mattias was offense – finish ahead of Vauquelin and the title was his.
The first attack on the climb to the line came with 1400 meters to go and it came from Valentin Madouas, who won Stage 1 and led the race for the first three days. It drew out the four strongest: Vauquelin, Skjelmose and Kevin Geniets, Madouas’ teammate.
Skjelmose explained: “On the last climb, I had to go deep, that’s for sure. It was all about positioning. I remember in Denmark we had a similar finish like this, and afterward, I spoke with my teammate Alex Kirsch, and he told me that you have to be up there and believe that this is your spot. So that was all I had in mind today. I had to fight for position before the last climb, but I think that was what made the difference. One or two positions further back and it would have been a difficult situation.”
The road leveled before it punched up again, and Skjelmose decided to take the race into his hands. With 250 meters to go, he jumped. Leading out the sprint this early seemed dangerous, but only Madouas was able to overtake the young Dane.
“At first, I was shit! I opened up the sprint too early. But then I saw it was Madouas going past me. I saw Vauquelin on the left, but I knew that if he was second and me third I would still win. In the end it was not so bad as it looked like,” explained Skjelmose.
Skjelmose held on for second place and sealed his second pro win, and first stage race GC, in two days – a significant achievement for the promising Dane.
“I am still very young, and I still have time to develop,” pointed out Mattias. “This year I showed I am good in one-week races, and the team wants to see me develop into a Grand Tour rider. I took a huge step after the Giro and if I can keep making these steps, I am really confident I will be a really good rider in the future, and go for a Grand Tour win. That’s the dream and what I will fight for.”
Of course, Mattias added the Tour of Luxembourg best young rider jersey to his collection, too.

Weather at the start/finish city of Remich at 1:20 PM, local time: 16C (61F), cloudy, with the wind from the northwest at 19 km/hr (12 mph). There is a 20% chance of rain, rising to 60% at 5:00 PM.
The race: The race organizer posted this short report.
The fourth stage of the SkodaTour Luxembourg featured a 26.1 km long time trial with the start and finish in Remich. In partly rainy weather conditions, Mattias Skjelmose Jensen (TFS) won with 3” ahead of Kévin Vauquelin (ARK) and 13” ahead of Morten Hulgaard (UXT).
Skjelmose Jensen has also taken over the overall leader’s yellow jersey from Valentin Madouas (GFC), who finished 39” behind.
Mattias Skjelmose Jensen: “To be honest, I haven’t felt that good in the past few days. I think the last riders were all riding in the same conditions. You had to be a bit careful sometimes, but it could have been worse with the wet roads. Tomorrow, of course, I want to defend the yellow jersey. But the competitors have been very strong in the last couple of days.”
Here's the report from winner Mattias Skelmose Jensen's Team Trek-Segafredo:
After a remarkable second season as a professional, Mattias Skjelmose finally achieved a major milestone in his career – his first professional win. Skjelmose stopped the clock on the hilly time trial in 34’05”, three seconds faster than his closest competitor on the day. Additionally, Skjelmose’s effort was enough to overcome his deficit in the general classification and position him as the new race leader by three seconds with one stage to come.
Speaking immediately after his win was confirmed, Skjelmose said: “This [victory] means a lot! I’ve been close; I can’t even remember how many times this year. We really believed I could win this one and it was a big goal coming in to the race. To finish this off is just amazing. I can’t really describe it. We knew it would be a really painful way home with 8 kilometers slightly headwind, and also a painful start with a very steep climb, so it was all about pacing this one. I was a little bit conservative on the way out, I tried to keep a little bit [of energy], and then just closed my eyes and went all out the last eight ks on the flat part. To be honest I haven’t been feeling super this week, but I have the power. It was the same yesterday, I don’t know why. But obviously the bike is going fast and that is the most important.”
Skjelmose came close to victory yesterday with a gutsy late attack but was brough back in the final kilometer. Despite a very impressive season of several podium placings, the highly sought after first pro win managed to elude Skjelmose until today. Along with his Trek-Segafredo team, the Danish neo-pro has one stage remaining to defend the lead, hoping to double his win tally with a GC victory.
“The strategy tomorrow is to keep [the leader jersey], but it’s going to be difficult. We saw Madouas and Geniets are looking really strong. And [Vauquelin] finishing second today is also looking really really strong. I hope we can have some allies in those looking for a stage result, because otherwise it’s going to be really difficult being one and half men down.
The first professional victory is something every rider chases, and also remembers for the remainder of their career. For Mattias, it’s been a long time coming after a season full of ‘nearly-wins’, but finally his frustration has turned to joy, and we’re sure there will be plenty more to celebrate through his career.
“It’s really special. I have been close so many times this year and at one point I thought I wouldn’t get it. But It’s finally here and I can’t describe this. It’s really nice to have the first one crossed off and hopefully I will have many more in my career.
“Two days ago it was my 28th top 10 finish this year without a win, and in the end you race to win all the time. It’s your childhood dream. It’s why I want to be a pro to win races and to finally have it, is really special. I mean, I am just so happy! Also for the people at home who have sacrificed so much, for them this also means so much. They have given up their own dreams to have me at the best form possible, and without them I could not have done this. This is a mix of everything: happiness and to finally give something back to people that support me all the time. Just to crack the first win hopefully means I can hope for more. The team has not given me any pressure, they have given me a lot of chances.”

Thursday, September 15: Stage 3, Rosport - Diekirch, 188.4 km
Aaron Gate wins stage three.
Bill & Carol McGann's book The Story of the Tour de France, 2020: The Tour During Covid-19, Better Late Than Never is available in both Kindle eBook and Audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.
Weather at the finish city of Diekirch at 1:30 PM, local time: 18C (65F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the northwest at 13 km/hr (9 mph). There is just a 2% chance of rain.
The race: Here's the report from third-place Davide Ballerini's Team Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl.
Despite a hilly route and two steep climbs stacked in the final 15 kilometers, stage 3 of the Tour de Luxembourg didn’t see any big gaps open between the general classification contenders, in part thanks to Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, who rode hard to keep things together. Even when the bunch split on the final climb and Davide Ballerini and Tim Declercq slipped to the second group while Florian Sénéchal continued with what was left of the peloton, our guys didn’t give up and came back for the closing kilometers.
“El Tractor” drove a big tempo at the front, bringing back the only rider who managed to escape over the top of the ascent, before shutting down another attack, two kilometers from the finish. But when another acceleration involving two men came, the duo managed to hold off the chasers, despite a stunning effort of Davide Ballerini, who came close to bringing them back before eventually running out of road. The Italian finished third, followed by the French Champion, who is our best placed rider in the standings, in fifth place.
“Our team did a very good stage, they kept riding well and showed their shape, but today two guys jumped away just as we made the catch and kept going until the finish. We did our best, but came up short, just like on the previous stage. We miss that win, and it’s frustrating as we gave everything, but we’ll keep trying”, said sports director Brian Holm ahead of the penultimate stage, an individual time trial.

UAE Team Emirates' Matteo Trentin wins stage two.
Les Woodland's book Sticky Buns Across America: Back-roads biking from sea to shining sea is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.
Weather at the finish city of Schifflange at 1:15 PM, local time: 23C (73F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). Currently there is a 19% chance of rain, rising to 54% at 3:00 PM. There are thunderstorms in the area.
The race: Two riders did not finish yesterday: Juan José Lobato (Euskaltel) and Christophe Masson (Geofco Doltcini). That left 111 riders in the race, who all stated today's stage.
Here's the report from stage winner Matteo Trentin's UAE Team Emirates:
Matteo Trentin took full advantage of a perfectly executed team lead-out today with an impressive victory on stage 2 of the Tour of Luxembourg.
A group of 8 riders formed the days breakaway on the 163km around Junlinster, though they would be picked up by the UAE Team Emirates lead peloton with inside the final 10km to go.
The final climb of the day with a maximum of 16% at 1km long came at the 7km mark, though UAE would hold strong and bring back any last minute attacks through Rafal Majka.
Rui Oliveira launched the sprint forcing the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl train to react with Trentin able to power past, beating Frenchman Florian Senechal on the downhill sprint to the line for his second win of the season.
Trentin: “It was a really nice final with a small climb and fast run through the city. We planned to do the climb with a hard but steady tempo with Majka and then focus on the leadout with Suter, Oliveira and our stagiaire Kluckers. The guys made a really good leadout and we forced Quickstep to go early and so we were able to come around in the last metres. The time-trial should decide the final GC but we’re focused day by day and making another good stage tomorrow.”
The third stage, from Rosport to Diekirch (188.4km) will be another day of rolling terrain.

Tuesday, September 13: Stage 1, Luxembourg - Luxembourg Kirchberg, 163.8 km
Valentin Madouas takes the first stage.
Les Woodland's book Cycling’s 50 Craziest Stories is available in print, Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.
Weather at Luxembourg at 1:30 PM, local time: 22C (72F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 10 km/hr (6 mph). No rain is forecast.
The race: Here is the stage one report from winner Valentin Madouas' Team Groupama-FDJ.
A bit more than a week ago, Valentin Madouas brought a nice touch to his superb year with a great victory in the Tour du Doubs. On Tuesday, the Frenchman further enhanced his 2022 record by winning solo on the first stage of the Tour Luxembourg. Following good work from his teammates throughout the whole day, the 26-year-old puncher was strong enough to go solo on the last climb, less than two kilometres from the line, thus conquering the victory… and the first yellow jersey! A perfect start.
On Tuesday, Groupama-FDJ returned to a race they left on a high last year. In the streets of Luxembourg, David Gaudu indeed closed his stay in the grand duchy with a nice victory. Frédéric Guesdon and Jussi Veikkanen’s men were then eager to restart in a comparable way with the opening stage of the 2022 edition. “We came here to win stages, especially the first one as we knew that the final suited us”, introduced the French sports director. “We also had in-shape like Valentin and Kevin.” Around the Luxembourg capital, the riders had to tackle several climbs over the route’s 163 kilometres, including two climbs in the last ten kilometres”.
Fully confident with its leaders, the team took responsibility when a five-man breakaway developed. “We hoped that other teams would help us control the break, but we took part in the chase”, said Frédéric. “We had a plan, and we were aiming for a stage victory, so asked Clément to pull”. The young Frenchman therefore spent most of the stage at the head of the peloton to manage the gap, but not only. “We wanted to make the race hard, that’s why Clément went quite fast in the climbs, both to reduce the gap on the breakaway, but also to tire our opponents”, added Valentin Madouas.
After a long chase and a great work by his young teammate, the breakaway was eventually caught at the bottom of the penultimate climb. “We wanted to arrive all together with 12 kilometres to go and make a hard pace from the bottom to get rid of as many riders as possible”, added Frédéric. “Tobias positioned us well then Lorenzo set a strong tempo to make things hard. We know that the harder it is, the better it is for Valentin. We had to make the bodies suffer and not climb at a slow tempo”. At the top, about fifty riders broke away from the rest and then headed to the last climb: the Kirchberg (1.6 km at 6.3%), whose summit was located just over a kilometre from the finish. “We did a recon of the climb yesterday because our hotel is close”, said Frédéric. “Lars and Kevin needed to make things hard again for Val to counterattack with 1000-1500 metres to go”.
From the first slopes, the former Luxembourg champion indeed made a strong acceleration that few riders were able to follow. “Kevin attacked first to force the others to make an effort,” said Frédéric. “They came back, and Valentin went immediately”. “I also had pain in the legs”, admitted the Breton. “Kevin put in a big attack. I didn’t want to bring the others to him. I bided my time. When I then saw that they slowed down, that everyone needed to breathe and that they were struggling to come back to him, I knew it was the right time to attack”.
This time around, no one was able to follow his wheel. With a bit less than two kilometres remaining, the rider from Brest left everyone behind. “I made a gap right away,” he said. “I had a difficult time afterwards. I had to catch my breath because I gave everything at the top of the climb to get as much of a lead as possible. The last 500 metres were very hard, the legs were full of toxins, but it was enough to join the line. It’s really great”. A solo winner, three seconds ahead of his first chaser and eight on the bunch, Valentin Madouas was able to fully celebrate his second success in ten days. “It’s a wonderful day for us,” he added.
“We prepared it well. The whole team did a great job, and the legs are really, really good. My recent victory certainly gave me confidence. Winning is liberating. I recovered well from the Tour du Doubs, where I managed to win despite not having a great day. What gave me confidence was actually to think that I could have won more easily if I had had a good day. Today, I looked at the startlist and I knew that I had to go before the sprint”. “Valentin was motivated, and with his latest victory, he took off some pressure and knew he was going well”, confirmed Frédéric. “We did everything to put him in the best possible conditions at the bottom of the climb, then it was up to him to do his thing. He made a very good effort. We saw that they tried to chase behind, but they just couldn’t match him”.
While his selection for the Worlds Championships’ Road race was made official on Tuesday, the French puncher took his fourth win among the pros as well as the leader’s yellow jersey. “It’s a great race with good competition, and it’s for sure a good sign for the world championships”, concluded Valentin. “Nevertheless, I have a race to finish before going there. We will try to keep the jersey as long as possible. In any case, I might be in a shape that I have never been in during my career”. “This Tour Luxembourg will certainly not be a failure, but there are still other stages that may suit us”, ended Frédéric. “We’re not going to take stock after this victory. We hope to win a second one and why not get in the mix for the overall. The most important thing is that we don’t make any mistakes and that the team gives everything”.
