Caleb Ewan takes the final stage.

The race: Here's the report from GC winner Felix Großschartner's Bora-hansgrohe team:

Cycling's 50 Triumphs and Tragedies

The final stage of the 55th edition of the Tour of Turkey had its big showdown like every year in the city center of Istanbul. Before the riders headed into the tricky finale, which was earmarked with many corners, they had to cover 172km starting from Sakarya.

After yesterday’s impressive solo stage win, Felix Großschartner and his BORA – hansgrohe teammates went more than motivated into today’s finale to defend the leader jersey, with the goal to claim the team’s first ever WorldTour stage race. Like the whole week, a group of several riders went into the day’s break and enjoyed a gap of two minutes, until they got caught by the peloton, led by the BORA – hansgrohe riders, shortly before the finale.

As the race headed into the city of Istanbul, the BORA – hansgrohe guys worked for their two leaders Sam Bennett and Felix Großschartner. They brought Sam into a good position and tried to protect Felix as best as possible to secure the leader’s jersey. Like last year, Sam tried to surprise the other sprinters with an attack just before the Flamme Rouge. But this year Caleb Ewan was able to close on Bennett just before the final turn.

Ewan took his second stage win, while Sam Bennett with a third place today took the overall sprint classification. Felix Großschartner crossed the line in eighth to secure the overall victory at the Tour of Turkey. This overall win is the team’s first ever WorldTour stage race victory and a perfect end to a epic week of racing.

From the Finish Line:
“It is my first overall victory, like it is for the team BORA – hansgrohe. I am so happy to have secured the overall win today. We were close to a stage win again but I think we did a great job today and the whole week. I knew that I am in a good shape and to take my first WorldTour stage win followed by the overall win is just a really big thing for me. I want to thank everyone, who was involved, helping me to achieve this.” – Felix Großschartner

“We have won our first WorldTour stage race, and I am really proud to be part of it. The whole team did an amazing job this week. Of course, I am delighted to have won again the sprint jersey here in Istanbul. I took this year two stage wins and three times podium, I think it was a great week, now it is time to head home, focusing on the upcoming goals.” – Sam Bennett

“Well, of course we wanted to win today again but I think a third place is really good too. However, we won the overall classification, which is our first WorldTour stage race victory since we are a WorldTour team. I am really proud of the whole team, we have achieved that together. Felix showed an incredible shape and deserves that overall win, same for Sam. He took two stage wins and several podium spots and finished it off with the sprint jersey. All in all, it was a fantastic week for us here in Turkey." – André Schulze, Sports Director

Saturday, April 20: Stage 5, Bursa - Kartepe 170 km 164.1 km

Stage 5 profile

Felix grossschartner

Felix Großschartner wins stage five.

Weather: The stage was shortened because of heavy snow on the final climb to Kartepe

Plato's Crito

The race: Here's the report from winner and news GC leader Felix Großschartner's Bora-hansgrohe team.

The penultimate stage of the Tour of Turkey was this year’s queen stage and ended with a mountain top finish on Kartepe after 160 tough kilometers. The organization decided, following the extreme weather protocol, to shorten the stage by four kilometers as snow covered today’s climb near Istanbul.

Right from the start, the riders rode under pouring rain and cold temperatures but nevertheless, three riders built today’s breakaway and kept their lead until the final climb. BORA – hansgrohe switched tactics today, working for Felix Großschartner who was one of the favorites for the stage. Like in the previous days, the German team worked perfectly together and protected their leader, with Michael Schwarzmann and Sam Bennett bringing Felix into the day’s decisive part. Right from the first uphill kilometers several riders lost contact and only a selected group went into the final five kilometers. V. Conti was the first rider to make a serious move, followed by an attack from R. Evenepoel.

But Großschartner kept his focus, following all the moves to remain in control of the race. When Felix attacked with two kilometers to go only M. Kudus was able to follow the Austrian, starting a counter attack straight away. But also this time Großschartner kept his head together, trailing Kudus by just a few seconds. Just under the one-kilometer mark he closed the gap, before making the decisive move with 300 meters to go. Kudus had nothing left to counter and Großschartner took a supreme stage win on the Kartepe.

With this impressive performance Felix Großschartner took over the overall lead of the race from Sam Bennett, who still leads the points classification. With Felix also leading the mountains classification means that BORA – hansgrohe dominates all classifications of the race before the final stage tomorrow.

From the Finish Line:
“I am speechless, this is the first WorldTour victory in my career and my first leader’s jersey as well. I want to say thank you to the whole team for their amazing job today and during the whole week. In the finale, Michael Schwarzmann was so strong and helped position me for the final ascent. When we were just four riders at the front, I knew I could go for a stage win. Of course, I was careful as Kudus attacked, but then I went all in and was so focused, even if I couldn’t feel my hands I just kept going. I am more than happy with today’s win, to wear the leader’s jersey means a lot to me and of course I want to bring it home tomorrow, for me but also for BORA – hansgrohe.” – Felix Großschartner

“Well, what should we say, it is the penultimate day and we are first in every classification, GC, sprint and KOM.  I think there is nothing more to say than just what a strong and class team we have here. Everyone is working for each other, even if it is staff or riders. It makes me happy and proud to go into tomorrow’s last stage, defending the leader’s jersey and to maybe win the team’s first WorldTour stage race in history.” – André Schulze, Sports Director

Caleb Ewan

Caleb Ewan takes the fourth stage.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Caleb Ewan's Lotto-Soudal team:

Olympics 50 Craziest Stories

Caleb Ewan emerged victorious in the fourth stage of the Tour of Turkey today. At the end of the over 190 kilometres long stage, the Australian beat Juan José Lobato and Sam Bennett in a thrilling uphill sprint. Lobato tried to surprise by launching his sprint early, but Caleb Ewan was able to answer that acceleration, passed the Spaniard during the final metres, and took the victory!

The longest stage of the Tour of Turkey unfolded quite traditionally. From the gun, five riders went on the attack, but soon two riders let go and returned to the bunch. That way, it became an almost impossible task for the early break, also due to the headwind, to stay ahead. Eventually, the remaining escapees were caught at around ten kilometres from the finish, which was the sign for Lotto Soudal to get to the front of the peloton. In the run-up to the final climb, Caleb Ewan was kept in a perfect position by his teammates. Moments later, the Australian rewarded those efforts with a stage victory! In an exciting sprint finish, it was the Spaniard Lobato who tried to beat his rivals by starting his sprint quite early, but Caleb Ewan timed his sprint to perfection and passed the Spaniard in the ultimate metres. That way, Ewan took his second official victory for Lotto Soudal.

Caleb Ewan: “Already after the first stages, although not having the best legs, I knew that a stage win would be possible, so I got more confidence as the race progressed and also my legs were feeling better as well. Actually, the last three to four kilometres uphill were harder than I first thought. I did some research online beforehand, but you can never really see the gradients that way. The team always kept me in a perfect position during the run-up to the finishing climb, so I didn’t have to fight too much before the roads started to rise. That way, I could save some valuable energy before the final kick-up to the line, which clearly helped me at the end. Sam Bennett would have been hard to beat, but when he was supposed to start his sprint, I noticed that he was pretty tired. That is when I made my move. I was lucky that I still had a good acceleration left in the end, with Lobato starting his sprint quite early. I did not produce my best sprint power ever but it seemed like I still had the most energy left.”

“I took my two victories so far this year both in uphill sprints, but I am confident that I can still win during the flat finishes as well. I have been missing my lead-out man Jasper De Buyst. During the hectic finishes, I was maybe lacking that last guy to get me in the perfect position. The uphill finishes are therefore a little easier to position myself. It is a relief to take the victory here with the team constantly supporting me, and now I get to reward them with a win. There’s a little less pressure now going into the final days. I hope this victory gets the ball rolling for the Giro d’Italia, which will be my next race in a few weeks. I hope, once the Giro arrives, to be in the best possible shape.”

Thursday, April 18: Stage 3, Canakkale - Edremit, 122.6 km

Fabio Jakobsen

The race: Here's the report from winner Fabio Jakobsen's Deceuninck-Quick Step team.

Fabio Jakobsen made it twenty-four Deceuninck – Quick-Step wins this season at the end of the 122.6km-long stage 3 of the Tour of Turkey, where after being put in a perfect position by Max Richeze, he outsprinted overall leader (Sam Bennett) and Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data), despite a small incident which occurred with 100 meters to go.

“I was a bit far back going into the final kilometer, but I remained calm and confident. Max started his lead-out 400 meters from home and I left it late, because of the headwind. I got a little bit close to the barrier, as the wind was coming from the left, and a flag got caught in my shifter, but fortunately without any consequences, and I could finish off my team’s amazing work”, said the first Dutch rider in seven years to claim a stage win at the Tour of Turkey.

The stage between Çanakkale and Edremit followed its usual pattern: Eros Capecchi took up pace setting duties once again at the start of the day and made sure the advantage of the six leaders didn’t escalate, keeping it at three minutes before beginning to chew into it and reduce it to mere seconds with 15 kilometers left. His hard work paid dividends inside the last ten kilometers of the stage, where the remnants of the breakaway were easily pegged back by a bunch inside which tension was mounting with every kilometer.

The power lead-out machine that Deceuninck – Quick-Step is, comprising Remco Evenepoel, Davide Martinelli, Michael Mørkøv and Alvaro Hodeg, stomped its authority on the final and rode a huge tempo, which put in difficulty many riders, before Richeze dropped off Fabio Jakobsen at the front, from where the 22-year-old sailed to his third victory of the season.

“Without my team it would have been impossible to win, that’s why this is their victory. Of course, I was the one who sprinted to the line, but only after benefiting from their exceptional job. The last meters were slightly uphill, which played a bit into my favour, as I like this kind of finishes. It gives me great pleasure to rack up another victory and be on the top step of the podium in a World Tour race ahead of guys like Bennett and Cavendish. We came here for at least a success, we got it and now we’ll see what else we can do on the remaining stages”, a delighted Fabio concluded after picking up his tenth win in the pro ranks.

Wednesday, April 17: Stage 2, Tekirdag - Eceabat, 183.3 km

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and GC leader Sam Bennett's Bora-hansgrohe team.

Sticky Buns Across America

Stage two at the Tour of Turkey took the riders from yesterday’s finish in Tekirdag over 183km up to the National Park in Eceabat. BORA – hansgrohe with its overall race leader Sam Bennett, went into today’s stage aiming to defend at least the sprint jersey.

Like yesterday, a group of seven riders went up the road to open up a gap of four minutes, while BORA – hansgrohe taking once again control over the peloton. Approaching the final 30km of the race, the bunch started to increase the tempo, and with the gap now dropping steadily, the race was all back together with 20 km to go. Heading into the last 5 km it was Shane Archbold, who increased the pace significantly in order to position his teammates for the final uphill stretch of the day.

Just a selected group was left at the front when Lukas Pöstlberger launched an attack, two kilometres before the line, while this move allowed Sam Bennett to sit on his rivals’ wheels. Lukas was about to be caught with just 200 meters to go, at that moment Bennett took off irresistible to win yet another stage at the Tour of Turkey. Right behind him Felix Großschartner came in second to make it a one and two for BORA – hansgrohe. With this result Bennett also retains the leaders’ and points’ jersey of the race.

From the Finish Line:
“It was an amazing day. We had different cards to play in today’s stage and I think our tactic worked out quite well. While Shane and Schwarzi were pulling a lot, Lukas launched an attack at the end. With Sam and myself finishing on the podium, I think we can be more than satisfied with today’s result and I want to say thank you to the whole team for their work. I feel good and I am looking forward to the upcoming days.” – Felix Großschartner

“I am delighted to take yet another stage win here, my ninth now. Big thanks to the BORA – hansgrohe crew for all their efforts, yesterday and today. I said to my guys, that they should go and I will tell them on the climb if I feel strong enough or not cause the stage wasn’t so easy with the finale. Well, I pushed hard and with Felix finishing in second place I think we showed another amazing team effort.” – Sam Bennett

“Second day, second stage win and a strong second place. They guys did again a great job today. Sam defended and expanded his lead in the overall and sprint classification, but also Felix showed a strong performance to gain some seconds for the GC. The guys worked together from the start to the finish and everyone is fighting for each other. It is great to see such a strong teamwork. We are happy, but we will still give our best also in the upcoming stages.” – André Schulze, Sports Director

Tuesday, April 16: Stage 1, Istanbul - Tekirdag, 156.7 km

Sam Bennett

Sam Bennett wins the first stage.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Sam Bennett's Bora-hansgrohe team.

Tour of Flanders, the Inside Story

The 55th edition of the Presidential Tour of Turkey kicked off today with a 156km flat stage from Istanbul to Tekirdag. BORA – hansgrohe arrived with a strong team in Turkey around Sam Bennett, who won three stages in last year’s edition. But also the lead-out was particularly strong with the team’s latest signing Shane Archbold next to Baska, Pfingsten, Pöstlberger and Schwarzmann. For the GC the German team brought Austrian Felix Großschartner, who showed already a strong performance in this year’s Paris-Nice.

After some kilometres of racing, a group of six riders built today’s breakaway. The escapees enjoyed a gap of more than two minutes, while BORA – hansgrohe stayed in the peloton and took control over the pace in the bunch. As expected, the peloton closed the gap shortly before the finale, and the sprinter teams started their lead-outs.

BORA – hansgrohe did a stellar job to deliver Sam Bennett into a perfect position for the last kilometre. On the final stretch on a wide-open road along the coast, the Irish sprinter remained calm when sitting on the wheel of his opponents, before kicking off his sprint on the final metres. With no doubt the fastest today, BORA – hansgrohe’s sprinter flew to glory and took his eighth stage win in Turkey. By taking the Tour of Turkey opener, Bennett now also leads in the overall ranking and in the points classification.

From the Finish Line:
"I am so happy taking the opener here in Turkey again. I really like this country and I think the country likes me as well. The guys did an amazing job today, they pulled the whole day and delivered me perfectly. They take, as always, a huge part in today’s result. In the finale, I stayed on the wheel of the Deceuninck- Quick Step guys and first I thought it might be difficult today, but then I kicked off my sprint and had the highest speed. It always feels good finishing off a great teamwork.” – Sam Bennett

“We pulled right after the start together with other teams to give the escapees not too much space. Especially Michael Schwarzmann did a great job and pulled hard to close the gap. In the finale, our plan worked out perfectly, the guys brought Sam into position and he finished the great teamwork with a win off. Therefore, of course we are more than happy.” – André Schulze, Sports Director
