Saturday, July 13: Stage 14, St Pourçain sur Sioule - Lyon, 191 km

Weather: At the finish in Lyon at 12:45 PM local time it's 25C (77F) and forecast to climb to 27C (81F). Sky is fair, changing to full sun. Wind is from the north at 11 kph (7 mph), rising later to 19 kph (12 mph). Humidity is 47%.

The Race: All 181 of yesterday's finishers started today.

By the 30th kilometer a four-man break with Jens Voigt had established a slim lead of 30 seconds. Just as it looked like the escape would be absorbed a group of 14 made it across. With 104 km to go the big break's lead was 54 seconds. The stage's first hour was raced at a blistering 48.1 km/hr.

Then things settled down. With 42 km to go the escape was five minutes ahead of the Sky-led peloton.

Bam! The first real attacks in the break (the pack was 6min 30sec back) came on the penultimate climb, the Côte de la Duchère. Over the top Julien Simon timed it just right and quickly got a real gap. As he started the last climb, the Croix Russe, Simon had 14 seconds with Blel Kadri in hot pursuit. Over the top and with 9 km to go Simon had 30 seconds.

The chase was disorganized. At four km to go Simon had just 15 seconds while Tejay Van Garderen in the break kept attacking, but always getting caught and then, finally, dropped.

Michael Albasini caught Simon with 1 km to go and then the others bridged. Matteo Trentin came from far back to win the stage, Italy's first stage win this Tour. France and Spain are still without a stage victory.

Christophe Froome had an easy ride today and successfully defended his lead.

Tejay Van Garderen attacked the break several times and then was dropped.
