The Race: As soon as the peloton passed the end of the neutral zone and the official racing started, Jean-Marie Bideau accelerated with Czech time trial champion Jan Barta on his wheel. That was the day's break. The pair were allowed three minutes lead, but they were never going to be allowed a big gap. This flat stage was the property of the sprinters and they had no plans to relinquish that title to the duo.
Near the end of the stage the pair still held on to a slim lead, but Bideau buckled and had to let his powerful breakaway partner do all the work. With a few kilometers to go to the finish Barta had dropped Bideau and though the pack was just 10 seconds back, he refused to surrender.
Barta was caught with seven kilometers to go, so things were set up for a big, fast sprint. Omega Pharma took over, but they seemed to have gone a bit early and ran out of gas. Giant-Shimano timed things perfectly and at just the right time unleashed stage one winner Marcel Kittel.
Peter Sagan was perfectly positioned, tucked right in on Kittel's wheel. But no one could come around the blazingly fast German. Kittel charged for the line to take a clean win. But, Sagan's choice of wheel let him come in second and extend his points classification lead.
Vincenzo Nibali rode the race near the front, stayed out of trouble and preserved his two-second GC lead.

Since stage 3 had no rated ascents, Cyril Lemoine just had to finish the stage to retain his KOM leadership.
Jan Barta's combativity prize for stage 3 was certainly well-earned.
Weather in Cambridge: 24C (75F), wind from the southwest at 14 km/hr (9 mph). A mix of some clouds and sun. 20% chance of rain.
Km 1: 4:30AM, PDT. As soon as the neutralized zone was passed and the flag was dropped for the Départ Réel, Jan Barta (NetApp-Endura) and Jean-Marie Bideau (Bretagne) sprinted away from the field and in a couple of kilometers (the time its took me to write this), they have a one-minute gap.
Race leader Vincenzo Nibali's Astana team is leading the field.
Km 12: It looks like the peloton has decided to let this break go. Barta (an excellent time trialist) and Bideau have 3min 28sec. The riders are moving down the road rather briskly, they have been traveling at 44 km/hr.
Km 22: The crowds of fans are astoundingly huge. After 30 minutes of racing the break's lead is 3min 48sec. André Greipel's Lotto-Belisol squad is helping at the front. The Gorilla must be feeling his chances of prevailing in the flat finish are pretty good.
Km 39: 116 km to go and the duo has 4min 33sec. Astana is doing more than half the work at the front (the statisticians say 57%). The average speed has been 40.3 km/hr.
Km 62: 1hr 31min into the stage. Bideau and Barta are 3min 12sec. Jan Bakelants (Omega Pharma) has crashed, taking down Florian Vachon (Bretagne). Vachon was back up immediately and now Bakelants has rejoined the pack as well. The break is not being allowed much of a gap. The sprinters don't want to miss this opportunity.
Km 89: Omega Pharma just can't get a break. Not only have they lost Mark Cavendish, Jan Bakelants hit a water bottle in the feed zone and crashed again. Alessandro Petacchi is having trouble from a bee sting. The break's lead has been cut back to two minutes. FDJ and Giant-Shimano are helping Lotto-Belisol with the chase. The sprinters might want to have Barta and Bideau back in the field in time for the intermediate sprint in Epping Forest, at km 108.
There are a few drops of water on the road and there is some rain in eastern London.
Km 102: Nope, the gap is still 2 minutes and 16 seconds. The break will not be caught in time for the intermediate sprint. Though FDJ's sprinter Arnaud Démare hurt his wrist in a crash yesterday, FDJ is working for him today. FDJ director Yvon Madiot said this about Démare, "He's got a painful wrist but not enough to give up on his ambitions. We're here to lead him out in the final sprint."
Km 108: There's 2,500 Euros waiting for Barta and Bideau (1,500 for the first rider, 1,000 for second) when they take the intermediate sprint. Cannondale has moved up to the front to help Sagan preserve his points classification lead.
Bideau edged Barta to take the intermediate sprint. In the peloton Cannondale was lined up at front and then FDJ came charging up the right and unleashed Bryan Coquard. Coquard and Peter Sagan started shoulder to shoulder and then Coquard just blasted by, crossing the line with a big enough gap to look back at Sagan. The guy is fast and strong. The 13 points Sagan earned with fourth place allows him to preserve his points classification lead.
The sprint results:
- Jean-Marc Bideau, 20 points
- Jan Barta, 17
- Bryan Coquard, 15
- Peter Sagan, 13
- Elia Viviani, 11
- Arnaud Démare 10
The pack's acceleration has cut the duo's lead to 65 seconds.
Km 125, 30 to go: We are in the city of London. The gap has gone back out to 2min 10sec. Andy Schleck, Simon Gerrans and Ted King have crashed. All the fallen riders are back up and chasing the pack. Race leader Nibali is close to the front with at least four Astana riders with him.
When looking at the gap as we get close to the finish, from the BikeRaceInfo glossary:
Chapatte's Law: Formulated by former racer and Tour commentator Robert Chapatte, it states that in the closing stages of a race a determined peloton will chase down a break and close in at the rate of 1 minute per 10 kilometers traveled. If a break is 3 minutes up the road the peloton will need to work hard for 30 kilometers to catch it. TV race commentator Paul Sherwen regularly uses Chapatte's Law to come up with his often surprisingly accurate predictions of when a break will be caught. It's now calculated by computer on French television.
Therefore, if the duo have 2 minutes with 20 km to go, they have a chance.
Km 134, 21 to go: As the peloton passes the Olympic Park the gap has gone down to 94 seconds. The speed is going up and the pack is lined out. Average speed for the day so far is 41.6 km/hr. Barta and Bideau still look good (Bideau is just starting to rock in the saddle) and seemed to have upped their effort. They were probably dosing their efforts over the earlier kilometers so as not to rile the pack.
It's starting to rain lightly.
Km 141: It's raining seriously now. The oily city roads could be as slippery as ice. The gap is 65 seconds. Lotto-Belisol has only one rider at the front. The rest of the effort is being done by Astana. Barta went very carefully around a corner, respecting the treacherous roads. Bideau is having trouble holding Barta's wheel. Barta (Czech time trial champion) waited for Bideau, but he has to do all the work.
Km 145, 10 km to go: The gap is only 30 seconds. Barta will not surrender.
Km 147, 8 to go: Barta has dropped Bideau, who is cooked. Barta has 20 seconds. Bideau has been caught by the pack.
7 km to go: Nicolas Roche leads Contador at the front of the pack. Barta has just a small gap, maybe 10 seconds.
Barta is caught.
5 km to go: The speed is going up and Omega Pharma has formed a train, for Mark Renshaw?
3.5 km to go: Giant-Shimano just went to the front. Sagan is moving up. There was a crash midway in the pack.
The finish: Giant-Shimano led out the sprint, unleashing Marcel Kittel with Sagan on his wheel. All Sagan could do was hold the surging Kittel's wheel. No one could come next to Kittel as he charged across the line.
