The Race: Thomas Voeckler and Luis Maté broke away early, but the sprinters wanted this flat stage for themselves, so the lead never got very large. Maté had bad luck, first having his chain get snarled and needing a new bike (Voeckler waited) and then getting a front flat. At that point Voeckler pressed on. Refusing to give up, Voeckler grimly held on until about 15 km to go, when he was finally caught.
There was more bad luck. Lotto-Belisol had three riders go down, forcing Greg Henderson to abandon. Chris Froome crashed and had to wear a splint for much of the race. At this point I don't know his condition, though he did finish the stage in the front group.
The pack was together for a big sprint and all the good speedsters duked it out. Alexander Kristoff got a jump and Marcel Kittel clawed his way past him. Peter Sagan had a late crash and resolutely made his way to the front and at the last moment landed on Kittel's wheel. Kittel towed the talented Sagan to fifth place.
Kittel has so far won three of the four stages. Vincenzo Nibali remains the GC leader going into tomorrow's stage. Peter Sagan is still the leader in the points and young rider classifications.

Km 33.5: The Tour today is in France, but Andy Schleck did not start. Thomas Voeckler (Europcar) and Luis Maté (Cofidis) escaped early and now have a lead of 3min 15sec. Chris Froome (Sky) and Bauke Mollema (Belkin) crashed. Both made it back to the pelton but Froome is looking banged up.
Km 38: Giant-Shimano and Lotto-Belisol are helping Astana police the front of the pack. The gap to Voeckler and Maté is 3min 32sec. Average speed so far is 43.7 km/hr.
Km 61: The race is 1hr 24min old. Voeckler and Maté are 3 minutes ahead of the peloton. Voeckler's director sportif Dominique Arnould said this about Voeckler, "He told us this morning he wanted to get in the breakaway. He's riding strong and you never know. They may manage to thwart the sprinters, although it would have been better if there'd been other riders with them. It's not easy for two riders on their own. It'll all depend on how the sprinters' teams react."
Km 68, 95km to go: The gap is falling, it's now 2min 22sec. Regarding Chris Froome's fall, one of his directors, Nicolas Portal, said, "It's OK, It's OK. We were scared out of our wits, like everyone else, but after talking with him everything seems OK. He hit the tarmac hard, but everything's all right. We gave him a splint and, of course, we're taking things carefully now. I'm not superstitious, but this is one fall we could've done without." But of course, Sky would not say, Froome is in trouble, he weak and this would be a good time to attack him. Teams almost always try to hide their riders' troubles.
Km 91: We're coming to the intermediate sprint, which is placed 15 deep. Cannondale is moving to the front, bringing points leader Peter Sagan. Maté has a mechanical, a problem with his chain. He gets a new bike almost immediately. Voeckler waited for Maté and the two are together. Voeckler crosses the line first, the pair do not contest the sprint.
The sprint is a long, uphill drag. Cannondale takes Sagan to the sprint, where he gets third place easily. The makes the Points Classification at this point thus:
- Peter Sagan 132 points
- Bryan Coquard 99
- Marcel Kittel 90
Voeckler and Maté now are only 64 seconds ahead of the pack.
Km 99: Well, things just got interesting. Between the accelleration caused by the intermediate sprint and the cobbled descent and tail wind, there is a split in the peloton. Cannondale and Lotto-Belisol are hammering the front, trying to keep the dropped riders, who are not organized yet, from regaining the field. Don't know yet who was caught out.
Km 105: As the pack tries to leave the split behind, Voeckler and Maté are losing their lead. The pair have just 34 seconds. The second group has Joaquin Rodriguez, Arnaud Démare and Michal Kwiatkowski and is a minute behind the main peloton.
Km 109: Maté has a front flat. Voeckler presses on. Maté gets a fast repair, but he is caught by the peloton. Kwiatkowski's getting caught in the second group has Omega Pharma working to unify the peloton and bring their GC man back up to the front group with Nibali and Froome.
Km 112: The Kwiatkowski/Rodriguez group has caught the main peloton. At the back Nicki Terpstra (2014 Paris-Roubaix winner) went down and he's back up almost immediately and chasing the pack.
Voeckler is awesome! He has grown his solo lead to 1min 15sec. He's got 50 km to go.
Km 127: The peloton seems unmotivated and the lone Thomas Voeckler (in a huge gear) has conserved his 1min 15sec lead. Of course, he was first over the fourth category Mont Noir. Lotto-Belisol and Tinkoff-Saxo are at the front of the pack.
Km 132, 31 km to go: The pack has come alive and Voeckler's lead is now just 33 seconds.
Km 137: Going through Armentières, Lotto-Belisol riders Greg Henderson, Lars Ytting Bak and Bart de Clercq have gone down. Henderson crashed hard. This will certainly make André Greipel's job of beating Marcel Kittel, Arnaud Démare and Peter Sagan today much harder.
Voeckler has just 18 seconds and is looking like he's running out of gas. He's making even more odd faces than usual. Giant-Shimano has put a lot of horsepower at the front. The race is going 48 km/hr.
Km 143, 20 km to go: Greg Henderson has had to abandon after crashing and injuring his knee. Voeckler has just 12 seconds.
Km 148: Sagan has had some sort of problem and is making his way through the follow cars alone. Sagan has a scuffed jersey, looking like he crashed. Voeckler, fighting until the last moment, has been caught. At the front, it's Garmin-Sharp and Tinkoff-Saxo.
Km 151, 13 km to go: Sagan has made contact with the back of the peloton. The pack is flying (57 km/hr!) and now he has to make his way to the front.
Km 154: Parallel lines of Tinkoff-Saxo and Garmin-Sharp riders are leading, protecting their GC men Contador and Talansky as the pack blitzes through Lille.
Omega-Pharma went to the front, Tony Martin took a pull and found hismelf with a gap. Martin waited for the field.
Km 159, 5 km to go: Garmin-Sharp is back to leading with Omega-Pharma just taking over. The roads are damp from an earlier rain. Now Europcar is moving up.
The finish: Alessandro Petacchi took a fierce pull and swung off. Now Tony Martin leads.
Giant-Shimano pulls hard at the front while Peter Sagan keeps moving up and now, incredibly, is now on Kittel's wheel.
All the good sprinters were lined across the road for a huge, fast sprint. Kittel just takes it from Alexander Kristoff and Arnaud Démare.
