The Race: The roads were slick from rain and oil, causing innumerable crashes. Already badly hurt, Chris Froome fell twice before stage five reached the first cobbles. The second crash was the last straw and the 2013 Tour champion climbed into the team car and quit the 2014 Tour de France.

Over the slippery cobbles Vincenzo Nibali asserted his superiority, finally riding in a lead group of three with Lars Boom (Belkin) and teammate Jakob Fuglsang. Near the end Boom blasted away and rode strongly to the finish to win a staggeringly difficult stage. Nibali finished third and in doing so, might have destroyed the hopes of the rest of the contenders. Alberto Contador, especially, who suffered today, finished nearly three minutes down.

Sky seems to have appointed Richie Porte as their new GC man. Porte was falling further behind in the Contador group when teammate Geraint Thomas pulled him up to the next chasing group with Andrew Talansky.

What a day of racing!

Stage 5 live updates:

Weather in Roubaix, France: 14C (58F), light rain, wind from the northwest at 19 kph (12 mph). It has rained 5.88mm (a quarter inch) in the last 24 hours.

Before the start: Bad weather has forced the organizers to remove two cobbled sectors from the day's course. Here's their announcement: Due to bad weather and road conditions, two cobbled sectors have been removed from stage 5 [see map below]. They are sector 7, the 1,000-metres stretch of cobbles at Mons-en-Pévèle, and sector 5, which is the 1,400-metres long portion from Orchies to Beuvry-la-Forêt. It takes the total of pavé sections down to 13 kilometres but the race will remain highly attractive! The total distance is of stage 5 will be 152.5km, which is 3km less than initially planned.

Giant-Shimano rider Koen de Kort tweeted today, "I have to somehow feel like I'm about to be witness to an epic and historic stage. This is a day to never forget."

As exciting as the stage will be to the tough men of the peloton, Alberto Contador's comments reflect the anxiety the GC men feel about the potentially dangerous cobbled stage, “I will cross my fingers for tomorrow - it will be a really difficult day. The weather forecast is very bad. Already without bad weather it will be a complicated stage but with rain it will be like ice-skating with bikes. We will have winds of about 30 km/h, which might cut the peloton into pieces even before the cobblestones. But we are concentrated and we’ll ride the sections together as a team.”

Today's stage will pass through the city of Muscron and the town decided to pay homage to one of her sons, Omer Huyse, who raced professionally from 1924 to 1930. Huyse won the Tour's longest ever stage, the fifth leg of the 1924 Tour, going from Les Sables D'Olonne to Bayonne, a staggering 482 km! Racing was far different then. The ordeal took Huyse 19hr 40min to complete. The town commissioned a bust of the cycling hardman for the occasion. Ottavio Bottecchia won the 1924 Tour, the first of his two consecutive Tour wins.

Km 0, 4:45 AM PDT: The riders roll through the neutralized zone over the cobbles of Ypres (called "Wipers" by British WW1 soldiers) center. It's raining. As they ride through the windy, cold rain under leaden skies, the riders look grim-faced.

Départ Réel: Tony Martin takes a hard pull to get the peloton up to speed. Ben King of Garmin-Sharp then tries his luck with an attack, but he's brought back immediately.

Km 7: Nine riders have gone clear with a five-second gap. They are Lieuwe Westra (Astana), Tony Martin (OPQS), Sam Dumoulin (AG2R), Janier Acevedo (Garmin), Tony Gallopin (Lotto), Marcus Burghardt (BMC), Rein Taarämae (Cofidis), Simon Clarke (Orica) and Matt Hayman (Orica). There's a lot of horsepower here.

Km 10: Giovanni Visconti and Brice Feillu are trying to get up to the break, which now has 48 seconds.

Km 22: Visconti and Feillu could't bridge up to the break and have been caught by the pack. The gang of nine have grown their lead to 1min 10sec. NetApp-Endura has put two riders at the front to work to bring the break back.

Km 31: It's a very wet day in West Flanders. The break is working hard and has 1min 28sec.

Arrgh! Another crash and it's Chris Froome who is down. His jersey is torn. He has a new bike and he's up and chasing with Daniel Oss of BMC. Sky riders are dropping back to motor Froome back up to the field. Sky has kept Richie Porte up in the peloton, surely not wanting to squander his GC chances if Froome should falter. Astana is at the front of the peloton.

Riders in the break are removing their rain jackets.

Km 38: Report that Tony Martin and Janier Acevedo in the break have crashed. This is looking it's going to be a rough day. Azevedo has been caught by the peloton. And now breakaway rider Samuel Dumoulon has punctured and will surely be caught.

The Froome chasing group has made contact with the back of the peloton.

Km 44: Tony Martin and Dumoulin are chasing the break together. Looks like Martin is doing all the work.

Km 50: Martin and Dumoulin have rejoined the break but Marcus Burghardt has dropped back (hunger knock is the report) and has been caught by the pack. The break is now seven riders strong and has a 1min 32sec gap.

Km 57: It has been a fast day, average speed so far is 48.5 km/hr. The break of seven riders is 2min 19sec ahead of the field. It's about 30 km to go before the first cobbled sector.

Marcus Burghardt did not return to the peloton because he got hungry. BMC director Yvon Ledanois wanted him back in the pack to protect BMC GC man Tejay van Gardeen and Greg van Avermaet, who might be able to take the yellow jersey in this first week.

Km 68: Going through the city of Roubaix. Cannondale is at the pack's front doing almost all of the work. The break of seven riders is 3 minutes up the road.

Km 75: The crashes continue. Now it's André Greipel and Matthew Busche. Both are up and chasing. The roads are slippery. Just going around a corner in the pack Sebastien Minard (Ag2r) hit the deck. Cannondale remains at the front. Marcel Kittel has gone down on a roundabout and is calling for service. Arnaud Démare is chasing after a fall as well.

Km 86: The cobbles have arrived, the famous Carrefour de l'Arbre. But the bigger drama is that Chris Froome has gone down again. The mechanics are getting him a bike, but he says no. Froome climbs into the team car. The 2013 Tour champion has abandoned the Tour de France. It looks like Froome's injured wrist kept him from getting a good grip on the bars. Earlier Alejandro Valverde and Tejay Vanderen also fell, but were quickly back on their bikes.

Km 96: Tejay Van Garderen and Valverde have just made contact with the main peloton. The break of seven is 1min 42sec ahead of the pack.

Km 101: There is no relenting, the average speed after two hours of racing is 47.6 km/hr. The break has 1min 29sec. Lieuwe Westra went through the intermediate sprint first. Peter Sagan was the first man in the peloton across the line, getting 8 points, strengthening his hold on the green jersey.

Km 105: The riders are going over the second sector of cobbles, This looks positively villainous. They are wet, slippery and dangerous. The riders are struggling to get over the pavé. No sign of Fabian Cancellara yet. Nibali looks as if he's handling the conditions very well and is right up front. The riders are getting covered in mud. It looks like the yellow jersey group has less than 20 riders. Contador is chasing.

Km 111: Hokey smokes! Contador has been caught out by the cobbles. He is 45 seconds behind the Nibali group of 28 riders.

Km 114: The break, 31 seconds ahead of the yellow jersey group, has entered the Bersée cobbles, it's a long one 1.4 km. Andrew Talansky has crashed as had Jurgen van den Broeck. Nibali looks comfortable with two teammates, who don't have the suds to help him. Nibali is doing the work of leading his group. It's hard to tell, there are so many riders spread back down the road, but it appears that Lars Boom and Sep van Marcke have attacked the Nibali group. Crashes are happening constantly.

I think Fabian Cancellara understated the day's prospects when he said there would be carnage today.

Km 120: So, five riders off the front, Boom and Van Marcke 21 seconds back and chasing. Then, the Nibali group further behind the five and chased by the Contador/Rui Costa group a further 57 seconds behind. Contador is 1min 14sec behind the front five.

Km 125, 26 km to go: Nibali is riding a superb race! His small group (now 16) has hoovered up the the breakaways. Contador/Van Garderen are 1min 16sec back.

Km 129: Now the front group is entering pavé sector 4, Sars-et-Rodières a Tilloy, a daunting 2.4 km long. There are 15 riders up front: Nibali, Fuglsang, Westra (Astana), Sagan (Cannondale), Boom, Vanmarcke (Belkin), Kwiatkowski, Renshaw, Trentin (OPQS), Gallopin (Lotto), Cancellara (Trek), Lemoine (Cofidis), Clarke, Hayman and Keukeleire (Orica). There are no GC contenders besides Nibali in this group. If he can press his advantage all the way to the finish, Nibali will have done himself a world of good. Cancellara has postioned himself well to go for the stage win.

The Contador group is at 1min 5sec.

Km 133: Peter Sagan, in the Nibali group, is pounding away on cobble sector number three. Group Contador is about two minutes back. The Talansky group appears to be between Nibali and Contador. Before the real climbing begins, Nibali may be putting most of the other contenders to the sword.

Km 138: A huge cobbled sector now, 3.7 km. Geraint Thomas is dragging Richie Porte free of the Contador group. Sky has to do something with Froome out of the race. Up front Jakob Fuglsang and Lieuwe Westra, both Astana teammates of Nibali, are hammering the front group and have pulled Nibali clear. The Yellow jersey is at the head of the race! It's Westra, Fuglsang, Nibali and Lars Boom off the front, the tête de la course.

That's how a champion rides the Tour de France.

Thomas and Porte have made it up to the Talansky group, 1min 58sec behind Nibali.

Km 146, 6 km to go: Westra is cooked and dropped back. Nibali, Fuglsang and Boom are 19 seconds ahead of a group led by Fabian Cancellara. The Talansky/Porte group is two minutes behind Nibali and Contador is 2min 16sec behind the leaders.

Km 148: Boom goes clear on the final sector of cobbles while Fuglsang and Nibali try to get back up to him. Boom looks good and quickly has 5 seconds.

The finish: Lars Boom takes a solo win after riding an epic stage. This was racing as hard as it gets. Nibali is third, led by Fuglsang across the line. Peter Sagan takes fourth place in front of Cancellara. The day has totally transformed the 2014 Tour de France. Contador has lost nearly three minutes.
