The Race: A nervous peloton suffered numerous crashes on the wet, slippery roads of today's stage. Alberto Contador will have to do without one of his climbing wingmen, Jesus Hernandez, when the Tour hits the high mountains. Hernandez fell hard enough to temporarily lose consciousness.
As the peloton closed in on the finishing city of Reims, crosswinds tormented some of the riders. Belgian squad Omega Pharma, experienced in racing under these conditions, used the wind to shell some competitors. One after another, Omega Pharma team members took hard, ferocious pulls, upping the speed sometimes to 55 km/hr. The pack was shattered into several echelons. The result was that several sprinters including Arnaud Démare and Marcel Kittel never saw the front again. Earlier reports (repeated in this site's live updates) were that Kittel had flatted, were wrong, he just couldn't get up to the front group when the hammer was dropped.
Under the Red Kite, Omega Pharma's Michal Kwiatkowski took off and for a while it looked like he might make it to the finish alone. But Europcar's Kévin Reza closed the gap. Then André Greipel unleashed an irresistible sprint that gave him the stage win. All bunch sprints in the Tour have so far been won by Germans (Greipel and Kittel).
Vincenzo Nibali stayed at the front and out of trouble, giving him another day in yellow.

But back in the 1930s when the publicity caravan started, the revenue from the advertising vehicles was an extremely important part of the Tour's revenue stream.

Weather at Arras, 1:25 PM, local time: 16C (61F), wind from north-northwest at 26 km/hr (16mph), some fog, humdity is 95%. It was raining at the start. Reports are it's raining at the finish at Reims as well.
Km 33: Four riders broke away at the start: Tom Leezer (Belkin), Luis Maté (Cofidis), Jérôme Pineau (IAM) and Arnaud Gérard (Bretagne-Séché). The quartet currently has a lead of 4min 5sec.
192 riders started today's stage. One of yesterday's finishers, Ariel Max Richeze (Lampre) was not on the line today.
Km 48: The peloton has clearly decided this is the day's break and the lead is still around four minutes (3min 48sec to be exact).
I just posted more photos from yesterday's difficult stage.
Km 57: Giant-Shimano is leading the peloton and they have brought the break's lead down to 3min 11sec.
Regarding Chris Froome's abandonment after crashing twice yesterday, LeTour.fr has noted that no defending Tour champion had quit the Tour since Bernard Hinaut's bad knee forced him to abandon at Pau in 1980. Hinault was asked about Chris Froome's departure, "As he crashed several times, bruises added to each other and he didn't want to race anymore. Had he continued, he would have been frightened on the pavé. He crashed twice on asphalted roads, how worse would it have been on the pavé! This stage is a message to the young cyclists: 'come and do Paris-Roubaix, you'll know what it is about and it'll help you when you'll ride on the pavé at the Tour'. Because the Tour will come back to the pavés again!"
Km 73: Things are stable with the break leading the peloton by 3min 2sec. None of the riders in the break are threats to the GC. Jérôme Pineau is the best-placed escapee at 22min 9sec. Chinese rider Ji Cheng (Giant-Shimano) is doing a lot of the work at the front. There are at least four Giant-Shimano riders at the front. Marcel Kittel must be feeling good today.
Km 85: It has been a brisk stage, 47.6 km ridden in the first hour. So far the stage average speed is 46.2 km/hr. The break is 3min 7sec ahead of the field. It is not raining right now.
Km 110: Luis Maté was first over the fourth category Côte de Coucy-le-Château-Auffrique, keeping anyone else from gettin the single point in play and therefore protecting his teammates Cyril Lemoine's KOM lead. Break's gap is 2min 47sec.
The riders are getting set up for the intermediate sprint at Pinon. Giant-Shimano continues to do lots of work at the front.
Shoot! A crash. Arnaud Démare is down. And another crash. Andrew Talansky and Jack Bauer are among the fallen. The roads are slick. Looks like all the fallen riders except Sky rider Xabio Zandio are getting up. The peloton is slowing at the request of Vincenzo Nibali.
Km 118: The breakaway riders did not contest the intermediate sprint, Tom Leezer leading them over the line. Giant has taken over the peloton to help Sagan get 11 points for fifth place. Mark Renshaw took the fifth place from Sagan, who was sixth.
Egor Silin (Katusha) and Xabier Zandio (Sky) have had to abandon after those recent crashes.
Km 126: Peter Sagan has crashed and is back to the rear of the peloton. The speed has suddenly gone up and the peloton is lined out. More crashes!
FDJ manager Marc Madiot had predicted that the race will get interesting at this point, “It's windy. The wind blows from the left side. There will be echelons! But it's a bit far away from the finish, so I'm not sure if it can work. There might be a regrouping before a bunch sprint.”
Km 130: Omega Pharma is hammering the front, which has reduced the break's lead to 26 seconds. Riders off the back, there have been some splits, will have a lot of trouble getting back on. Peter Sagan is almost a minute behind.
Cannondale riders have dropped back to help Sagan and it looks like his group will get back on.
Km 138: The Sagan group has made contact with the main peloton. The break still has 31 seconds.
Km 148: The peloton isn't too anxious to catch the breakaway of four riders. That would invite an attack of fresh riders, which would be more difficult to control. The gap has gone out to 56 seconds. Since this stage is devoted to the fallen of the First World War, French president François Hollande has joined Tour boss Christian Prudhomme's follow car.
Tinkoff-Saxo rider Jesus Hernandez has abandoned. Contador will miss the help of the good climber when the race reaches the high mountains. Hernandez fell hard and lost consciousness.
Km 162: Luis Maté was first over the Côte de Roucy and took the only KOM point available. The breakaway, made of Tom Leezer (Belkin), Luis Maté (Cofidis), Jérôme Pineau (IAM) and Arnaud Gérard (Bretagne-Séché), is 65 seconds ahead of the pack. Belkin, Tinkoff-Saxo, Astana, Giant-Shimano are leading the peloton. Some rain is falling.
Km 171, 23 km to go: The speed is going up, the break has only 19 seconds. The break's follow cars have been pulled. Bernard Eisel of Sky is leading with Richie Porte next to him. With Chris Froome's abandonment Porte is Sky's protected GC man for this Tour.
With the high speed and cross winds the peloton is breaking into echelons.
Km 175: Gérard and Leezer have been caught. Pineau and Maté are pressing on with their break, they have just 10 seconds. Maté attacked Pineau and is pressing on alone. Pineau is back in the peloton. Maté looks like he's in a 200-inch gear.
Km 181, 13 km to go: Maté is caught. Omega Pharma is leading the peloton. Omega's speed has caused splits in the peloton. The cross winds and high speed are shredding the pack. André Greipel is riding in third place. The Gorilla is obviously ambitious for a stage win. Démare is in a chasing echelon.
Km 187, 7 km to go: The contenders all look to be in the front group. Omega Pharma is driving hard, making sure the dropped riders in following echelons stay dropped.
5 km to go: A lot of riders, including several Sky riders (not Porte) are a half-minute back in the chasing echelon. Omega Pharma is hammering hard. This has the feel of a planned set-piece.
The finish: 2 km to go, lots of elbows being thrown as Katusha moves up. Sagan is well-placed. Sprinters Marcel Kittel (Giant) and Danny van Poppel (Trek) have had late flats and are not in the front group.
Kwiatkowski tries a flyer with a km to go. Kevin Reza drags the field up to Kwiatkowski. André Greipel comes past Reza and punches a giant gear and takes the stage.
