Major ascents:
- Km 217.5: Côte de Maron, 3.2 km @ 5% average gradient - category 4
- Km 229: Côte de Boufflers, 1.3 km @ 7.9% - category 4
The Race: The second-longest stage of this year's Tour was again marred by many crashes. Cannondale spent most of the day at the front, keeping a six-man break within reach. As the peloton got closer to the end, other teams, notably Orica-GreenEdge, brought the pace up to a point that a lot riders were getting shelled out the back.
Before the final climb there was a big crash that brought down several BMC riders, notably Tejay van Garderen. He had lots of help from teammates, but the pack was moving so fast he was unable to reduce his one-minute deficit to the speeding peloton. The unfortunate BMC rider is now 3min 14sec behind race leader Vincenzo Nibali.
Over the crest of the final climb, the Côte de Boufflers, BMC rider Greg van Avermaet attacked (while van Garderen was struggling to catch the pack) and over the crest he had a small gap and Peter Sagan for company.
The pair were caught near the finish and just as the pack was in full flight, Andrew Talansky went down hard.
Sagan and Matteo Trentin fought for the stage win and everyone initially thought Sagan had taken the stage. Trentin even congratulated Sagan. But a look at the photos revealed that Trentin was first over the line.
Race leader Vincenzo Nibali finished 16th, in the front group, to remain the overall leader.

Weather at Nancy, France at 12:45 local time:10C (66F), wind from the northwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph), 78% humidity. The forecast is windy with rain showers.
Km 48: Stage seven is this year's second-longest stage. All 189 stage six finishers signed on to start today. Just before the day was ten kilometers old six riders had broken away: Alexandre Pichot (Europcar), Matthew Busche (Trek), Nicolas Edet (Cofidis), Martin Elmiger (IAM), Bartosz Huzarski (NetApp) and Anthony Delaplace (Bretagne-Séché). None of the six represent a GC threat. Elmiger is the best placed, 43rd, 9min 25sec behind race leader Vincenzo Nibali.
The break at this point has a lead of 3min 0sec.
Km 53: Earlier, Stef Clement crashed, forcing the Belkin rider to abandon. The race is 1hr 11min old and there is drizzle falling on the riders. Average speed so far has been 43.1 km/hr.
Km 72: The gap has come down to 2min 30sec. These gents are going to be on a short leash today.
Km 95: Break is 2min 42sec ahead of the pack. Average speed of the stage so far, 42.7 km/hr.
Km 109: The break just passed through the feed zone 2min 3sec ahead of the peloton. Cannondale looks to have selected this stage as a good opportunity for Peter Sagan. Cannondale has lots of bodies at the front, keeping the break from romping away.
Km 122: The race is in the Verdun area, scene of some of the First World War's greatest horrors. The pack passed right in front of the ossuary at Douaumont which contains the bones of Verdun's fallen. No one can visit it without being terribly saddened.
The entire Cannondale team remains at the front, keeping the gap to the break at 2min 17sec. Astana with race leader Nibali is lined up behind Cannodnale and then Sky follows. Roads look dry.
Km 131: Speed looks to have gone up, the pack is lining out and some riders (Thomas Voeckler among them) are scrambling to regain contact with the back of the peloton. The gap to the break is down to 1min 36sec. The break: Alexandre Pichot (Europcar), Matthew Busche (Trek), Nicolas Edet (Cofidis), Martin Elmiger (IAM), Bartosz Huzarski (NetApp) and Anthony Delaplace (Bretagne-Séché).
Km 140: We're coming to the intermediate sprint at km 148. The wind is blowing at 20 km/hr which has largely been either a cross or tailwind.
Km 148: The gap to the break is only 68 seconds. The peloton can see the escapees up the road when the road straightens. Martin Elmiger sprints out of the break and wins the intermediate sprint.
Bryan Coquard went by the Cannondale train to take the field sprint followed by Mark Renshaw and then Sagan. Sagan, who didn't look like he wanted to go too deep with his stage win ambitions, was eighth, still good for 7 points.
Word has just come that Trek rider Danny van Poppel has abandoned. Van Poppel was the youngest rider in this year's Tour and the second Dutchman to abandon today. Now the peloton's youngest rider is Orica-GreenEdge's Simon Yates, who is 21.
Km 171, 63 km to go: The riders in the break are running out of gas. They aren't properly taking their turns at the front. Nicolas Edet tries an attack and is brought back by the other breakaways. The road is becoming hillier. The break's gap is 56 seconds. Average speed for the stage so far is 42.7 km/hr
Km 191, 43 km to go: Martin Elmiger (IAM) attacked the lagging break, taking Bartosz Huzarski (NetApp) with him. The pair are 55 seconds ahead of the peloton. The other four breakaway riders are about to be swept up by the peloton.
Cannondale is not lacking for confidence. Their Director Stefano Zanatta said this in a television interview, “With two small climbs, the finale is good for Peter Sagan. That's why we do all the work at the head of the peloton. We have taken the responsibilities because we have the best team. I hope that Peter will win. He had a good night after his crash yesterday. He doesn't suffer. He's got the strength and the personality for finishing it off today.”
Km 204, 30 km to go: Cannondale is still hammering at the front. Cannondale riders Elia Viviani and Ted King, exhausted from hours of tempo riding, have dropped off from the front. Elmiger and Huzarski still have a 35-second lead.
At the Tour of Austria, Tinkoff-Saxo rider Evgeny Petrov has won the hilly 6th stage. Peter Kennaugh remains the overall leader. I'll have complete results and GC posted later on in the day.
Km 212, 22 km to go: Time to race. The speed has gone way up. Riders are coming off the back. The leading duo has only 12 seconds. Orica-GreenEdge has moved to the front, fancying Simon Gerran's chances. Kittel has just ocme off the back.
The break has been caught.
Km 215: On the Côte de Maron, Thomas Voeckler has attacked. Of course he has. André Greipel and Arnaud Démare have been shelled. Orica-GreenEdge is not letting Voeckler get very far up the road. Voeckler is caught.
Simon Gerran's says he's recovering from his stage one crash. Sagan says he's feeling better also. It will be an interesting finish to today's stage.
Big crash near the front! Tejay van Garderen is down and is up immediately. He's got a tough chase ahead. He's got help from other fallen riders and some teammates who have dropped back. He's got a 47-second gap to close while Tinkoff-Saxo is forcing the peloton's pace.
Km 222, 12 km to go: John Darwin Atapuma (BMC) has abandoned after being part of that crash. Van Garderen is riding teammate Peter Velits' bike. Van Garderen has three teammates. Gap is 53 seconds.
Km 226: The BMC team time trial has made it to the car convoy. We're getting close to the last climb, the fourth category Côte de Boufflers. Peter Sagan looks to be down to one teammate.
Km 228: Cyril Gautier attacks and Tinkoff-Saxo, led by Nicolas Roche, nails him back. Nibali and Contador are next to each other, close to the front.
BMC rider Greg van Avermaet crests the hill with a small lead, Sagan is with him. Sagan leads on the descent. BMC has a rider attacking the front while BMC rider Van Garderen is trying to get back in the peloton.
3 km to go: Sagan and van Avermaet are flying and Orica-GreenEdge are slowly bringing the pair back.
The finish: Another crash in the pack. The pair have been caught. Andrew Talansky fell hard near the line. Sagan and Matteo Trentin lunge for the line and it's a photo finish. Van Garderen comes in a minute later. Trentin looks to have thought Sagan won and congratulates the Cannondale rider.
But, the judges have given the stage victory to Matteo Trentin
