Major Ascents:
The Race: Blel Kadri was the last survivor of a five-man break that went early in the stage. He went clear on the first categorized climb of the day, the Col de la Croix des Monats and stayed away for the stage's remaining twenty kilometers. He not only won the stage, he now owns the polka-dot jersey of the King of the mountains.
Several minutes back Alberto Contador's Tinkoff-Saxo squad went to the front and seriously ramped up the speed. They did succeed in largely isolating race leader Vincenzo Nibali. But when the final climb got steep and Contador threw attack after attack at Nibali, Nibali hung on. That is, until the final meters. Contador was able to finally get clear, but only by four seconds.
The hard day in the rain seriously reordered the general classification. Peter Sagan was shelled early in the climbing, so Michal Kwiatkowski owns the young rider's white jersey outright. Sagan does have a vise-like grip on the points classification, leading Europcar's Bryan Coquard by 111 points.
Richie Porte rode well and is now sitting in third place. Sadly, Andrew Talansky crashed again. The talented rider lost a couple of minutes and is now 16th, more than four minutes behind Nibali.

Weather at Nancy, France at 2:25 local time: 19C (67F), going to 23C (73F). Wind from the Northwest at 18 km/hr (11mph), just a 20% chance of rain. Cloudy with the sun forecast to pop out from behind the clouds.
Km 35: Of yesterday's 186 finishers, there was one non-starter, IAM cycling's Mathias Frank, who cracked his femur in a crash. That was a particularly hard blow to IAM, as he was their team leader. Andrew Talansky was showing wear and tear from yesterday's crash. When Sylvain Chavanel attacked this morning, Talansky was dropped from the peloton. He has since made it back to the field.
Sylvain Chavanel and Niki Terpstra are currently a minute ahead of the field with Blel Kadri, Adrien Petit and Simon Yates in between, chasing.
Km 41: The chasing trio has caught Terpstra and Chavanel and are 3min 23sec ahead of the field.
With three stiff categorized climbs late in today's stage it's thought Cyril Lemoine will have to give up his KOM leadership.
Km 44: The pack has clearly given tacit permission to the break. The riders 4min 1sec off the front are: Niki Terpstra (OPQS), Blel Kadri (AG2R), Sylvain Chavanel (IAM), Adrien Petit (Cofidis) and Simon Yates (Orica). None are GC threats. The best-placed is Chavanel, who is 73rd, down 26min 24sec.
Astana leads the peloton and seems uninterested in chasing seriously.
Km 49: Bart de Clercq (Lotto-Belisol) has abandonded, the 14th rider to quit this year. Gap has gone out to 5min 14sec. This is the largest break gap since the start of the 2014 Tour.
Interesting statistic: AFP writer Jean Montois says Peter Sagan is the first rider to have made the top 5 of the first seven stages since Charles Pélissier in 1930. That year Pélissier won eight stages.
Km 54: The riders are flying. The tailwind-aided racers have covered 51.2 km in the first hour. Still, the pack has shown no interest in the break, whose lead is now 6min 19sec.
Km 68: Astana, followed by Sky and then Movistar, still leads the pack, which is 7min 43sec behind the break.
Km 75: Astana has three riders at the front and they are not going to exhaust themselves before the climbs, so they have let the Sylvain Chavanel-led break get 8min 30sec ahead. This escape is made of quality riders, Chavanel has several Tour stage wins and is the current French time trial champion. Terpstra is this year's Paris-Roubaix winner. Blel Kadri is tapped as a potential future Tour de France winner. They may go the distance. If they do, Kadri is probably the best climber a possible stage winner.
Km 84: The escapees have 10min 6sec, with 76 km left to race. The stage is 1 hour 56 minutes old and the average speed so far has been 43.7 km/hr. With today's climbing not starting until the final 20 or so kilometers, the break has a good chance of surviving until the end.
Km 92: The peloton has passed through the feed station. Katusha has put a few riders at the front. Is Joaquin Rodriguez finally feeling good? The break has 10min 40sec. It looks like the wind is coming up. Its 20 km/hr, coming from their right.
Km 98, 63 km to go: The break has 10min 43sec. Break member Adrien Petit is starting to look grim-faced and a bit fried from working in the break for a couple of hours.
Km 106: Cannondale has gone to the front. The intermediate sprint is coming up and Peter Sagan wants to put a few more points in the Green Jersey bank. In the past 10 minutes Astana has done 70% of the pacemaking, FDJ 9% and Sky has done 8% of the work. The road is starting to get lumpy.
Km110: Bryan Coquard takes the field sprint for the intermediate sprint, then Marcel Kittel and Peter Sagan.
Km 118: It's raining. I wrote earlier that breakaway rider Adrien Petit was looking like he was having touble riding with the flying Terpstra and Chavanel. Petit's director Jean-Luc Jonrond explained: “He [Petit] crashed two days ago and his knee is in pain. He absolutely wanted to catch this breakaway. He gave his best but he probably hurt his knee again by riding so hard in the first hour. I'm afraid he's paying for it now…”
Km 126: The roads of the final 20 km in the Vosges are narrow and it looks like there is some scrambling for position. The pack's speed is going up and the gap has just come down to 8min 44sec. The peloton is lined out. Some riders are shedding their rain capes.
Km 134: Close to the foot of the first climb, the Col de la Croix des Monats, NetApp-Endura is at the front and driving the pack hard, surely for Leopold Konig. Riders in the peloton are being dropped and the gap has fallen to under seven minutes. In the break, Terpstra has done 23% of the work, chavanel 22% and Petit 19%.
Km 137: Here we go, we're on the first real ascent of this year's Tour. Sylvain Chavanel goes clear and Blel Kadri scrambles up to him. Chavanel's attack was a serious move, he went really hard. Kadri had to dig hard, and makes contact with Chavanel.
Tinkoff-Saxo leads the peloton. The break's gap is down to 5min 22sec. The pack is getting shredded with the high speed on the first climb.
Km 138, 22 to go: Tinkoff-Saxo's efforts have dropped Sagan, Joaquin Rodriguez and KOM Cyril Lemoine. Kadri has dropped Chavanel and is alone, off the front. Simon Yates is chasing Kadri. Kadri represents no GC threat, he's 49min 47sec down, in 159th place. But he was just 1 point behind Cyril Lemoine in the mountains classification. So he's probably headed to a polka-dot jersey at the end of the day.
Km 145: Kadri goes over the Col de la Croix des Monats alone, almost a minute ahead of Chavanel. Tinkoff-Saxo continues to hammer at the front. Don't see Astana riders except Nibali. Have they prematurely tired themselves defending Nibali's lead? Talansky and Porte are up at the front. The pack is 4min 27sec behind Kadri.
Km 148: Now we are on the Col de Grosse Pierre, which has a patch of 16% gradient. Kadri is 58 seconds ahead of Chavanel. Tinkoff-Saxo is banging away, surely preparing things for a Contador attack on the final climb. Nibali remains near the front as is Rui Costa. Michal Kwiatkowski had been dropped, but Tony Martin is pulling him back up to the field.
Km 150: Kadri is riding through a narrow defile of fans. Chris Horner has been dropped. Kadri goes over the Col de Grosse Pierre alone, 3min 55sec ahead of the Michael Rogers-led peloton. Chavanel is now nearly 2 minutes behind Kadri. Tony Gallopin has been dropped. The GC is being re-ordered.
Pierre Rolland looks to be in trouble. Fuglsang has been shelled.
Km 154: Now comes the final ascent, the third-category climb to Gérardmer La Mauselaine. Kadri is taking chances on the slippery, wet roads. The fog is thick, the roads wet. Michael Rogers is descending faster than his team can and he has to slow a bit. Tanel Kangert ran into a spectator's table as he overcooks a corner. Kangert is fine and back chasing.
2 km to go: Kadri is riding to a stage victory. He's on the climb, 3min 29sec ahead of the peloton. Michael Rogers is still leading the peloton, which has not yet reached the final climb.
Aww! Talansky has crashed, so has Geraint Thomas.
The finish: Kadri shook hands with his director a km before he reached the finish. The final 500 meters took forever, but the Frenchman wins the stage under pouring rain and takes the polka-dot jersey.
In the peloton, Nicolas Roche takes over, digging deep. Tejay van Garderen is up at the front as is Nibali.
Under the red kite, Contador attacks and Nibali marks him. Porte is bridging but can't close the gap.
Contador goes hard on the steep part of the climb and cannot drop Nibali.
Contador finally gets a small gap over Nibali and crosses the line second. Porte is just behind Nibali.
