The Race: The overall standings are a bit different after today's stage.
Early on, Tony Martin and Alessandro de Marchi escaped. At about the 40th kilometer, a good-sized chase group formed containing Tony Gallopin and Pierre Rolland.
As Martin and De Marchi were riding part way up the penultimate ascent, the first category Markstein, Martin simply rode away. Martin was never seen again until he arrived in Mulhouse. He rode the remaining 59 kilometers powerfully, never betraying weakness, his shoulders and body remains steady on the bike. He rides to the finish nearly three minutes ahead of his chasers. It was a fabulous ride.
As the chase group pulled away form the peloton, the possibility grew that the break's best placed rider, Tony Gallopin, might grab the lead. With tomorrow's brutal stage facing the contenders, the peloton's chase lacked drive and force.
Rolland, who had suffered earlier time losses, was also motivated to drive the break hard. His Europcar teammate Cyril Guatier buried himself helping pull the group. As hard as they rode, they never really cut Martin's lead by much. But, they came into Mulhouse with enough time to make Tony Gallopin the new yellow jersey, and Rolland the new eighth place.
Gallopin will have the pleasure of being a Frenchman in yellow on Bastille Day.

All 184 riders who finished stage 8 signed on to ride today's stage 9.
Km 0: The riders are riding the neutralized part of the start, the départ fictif. Vincenzo Nibali's current lead marks the 200th day in Tour de France history that an Italian is leading the Tour.
Km 1: We have the départ réel. Stage nine has begun. It's an uphill start, the second category Col de la Schlucht comes almost immediately.
Km 9: Several riders attacked early, including Peter Sagan. 17 riders are said to be be in the day's first break, they are about 20 seconds ahead of the peloton. Riders (including Arnaud Démare) are alreading being dropped.
We have the names of the riders in the break, and of course Thomas Voeckler is there: Danny Pate (Sky), Jesus Herrada (Movistar), Joaquim Rodriguez and Simon Spilak (Katusha), Sergio Paulinho (Tinkoff), Alessandro De Marchi (Cannondale), Laurens ten Dam (Belkin), Jan Bakelants (OPQS), Ben Gastauer (AG2R), Tom Dumoulin (Giant), Kristjan Durasek (Lampre), Arthur Vichot (FDJ), Tony Gallopin (Lotto), Amaël Moinard (BMC), Perrig Quémeneur, Cyril Gautier and Thomas Voeckler (Europcar), Dani Navarro and Nicolas Edet (Cofidis), Michael Albasini (Orica), Danilo Wyss (IAM), Leo König and José Mendes (NetApp) and Brice Feillu (Bretagne)
Km 24: Thomas Voeckler was first over the Col de la Schlucht, capturing the five KOM points. He was followed by Nicolas Edet, Joaquin Rodriguez and Tom Dumoulin. The pack went over 20 seconds after the break. Soon thereafter the break was caught.
Then Tony Martin and Alessandro de Marchi took off. De Marchi was the KOM at this spring's Dauphiné. The pair are 25 seconds ahead of the peloton while a groups of stragglers that includes Marcel Kittel are one to two minutes behind the peloton.
Km 41: De Marchi and Martin are near the summit of the Col du Wettstein, 1min 10sec ahead of the peloton. A group of twenty-six riders are between the duo and the pack.
Km 45: De Marchi led Martin over the Wettstein.
A group of 25 riders followed: Rojas (Movistar), Rodriguez and Spilak (Katusha), Paulinho (Tinkoff), Koren (Cannondale), Boom and Kruijswijk (Belkin), Chérel and Montaguti (AG2R), Dumoulin (Giant), Valls (Lampre), Ladagnous (FDJ), Gallopin (Lotto), Moinard and Van Avermaet (BMC), Rolland, Gautier, Pichot, Quémeneur and Reza (Europcar), Cancellara (Trek), Navarro and Edet (Cofidis), Meier (Orica), Chavanel (IAM), Machado (NetApp), Feillu and Bideau (Bretagne)
And from these 25, eight emerged: Spilak, Montaguti, Van Avermaet, Rolland, Quémeneur, Navarro, Edet, Machado
The peloton is 2 minutes behind the Martin/De Marchi break. KOM classification leader Blel Kadri, who suffered a mechanical, had a long, hard chase, but is back in the field. Astana has been leading the peloton.
Km 75: Alessandro De Marchi led Tony Martin over the third climb of the day, the Côte des Cinq Châteaux. 28 riders are 1min 21sec behind as they descend. The peloton with all the classification leaders is 4min 3sec behind the Martin/De Marchi duo.
The chase group of 28 has five Europcar riders and they lead their break. Right now Kévin Reza is at the front of the group of 28. Michael Albasini was in that group, but has flatted and is waiting for a new front wheel.
Km 82: Astana has the peloton in a long line. Average speed for the day so far is 44.3 km/hr. The most dangerous man in the chase is Tony Gallopin, he's 11th, just 3min 27sec behind Nibali.
Km 83: The break has reached the fourth climb of the day, the second-category Côte de Gueberschwihr. The riders just passed through the feed zone and are sorting out the chow in their musettes. The two breakaways are 4min 36sec ahead of the peloton. KOM Blel Kadri looks to be struggling after his long, solo chase following his early mechanical.
Km 92: De Marchi was first over the Gueberschwihr and picked up 5 KOM points. Joaquin Rodriguez was first of the 28 breakaways to go over the climb. The 28 are 1min 57 back and the peloton trails the front duo by 6min 10sec. Some of the sprinters are not enjoying the day. Marcel Kittel, Mark Renshaw and Arnaud Démare as well as Ji Cheng are about 11 minutes behind DeMarchi and Martin. The time cutoff for elimination is going to be about 26 minutes.
Astana continues to lead the peloton.
Km 99: Sylvain Chavanel, Lars Boom and Kévin Reza have left the chase group and dropped back to the peloton. With the gaps having gown so large, Tony Gallopin is now the virtual yellow jersey.
Km 107: Through the intermediate sprint, Martin led De Marchi, who seems to be having some sort of problem with his right hand. Martin (world time trial champion, remember) and De Marchi are 2min 36 seconds ahead of the chase group with Pierre Rolland and Tony Gallopin. The peloton trails the duo by 6min 40 second.
They are ascending the first-category Markstein.
Km 111: Bam! Tony Martin attacks De Marchi and goes solo. Martin quickly has a gap. Martin has 59 km to ride to the finish.
Geraint Thomas and Matthew Bussche have crashed but both look OK.
Km 119: It's raining. Martin rides strongly over the crest of the Markstein, 1min 45sec ahead of De Marchi, 3min 19 sec ahead of the Gallopin/Rolland Group (now down to 20 riders) and a giant 8 minutes ahead of the peloton with the yellow jersey.
Joaquin Rodriquez sprinted with Nicolas Edet for third place over the Markstein, Rodriquez got it. Astana continues to lead the peloton, unhurried nor worried about the riders off the front. Are they trying to hand the yellow jersey over to Tony Gallopin and let his team do the work of policing the pack for a while?
Km 126: Tony Martin is on the final climb of the day, the Grand Ballon. Then he'll have a long descent to the finish.
Km 129: Bam! Joaquin Rodriguez blasts out of the 20-man chase group, zooms by De Marchi and gets second place over the top of the Grand Ballon and the single KOM point. Rodriguez crashed in the Giro and looks to be riding himself into good form. Tony Martin is now the King of the Mountains.
Some of the sections of the descent are paved with cobblestones. Yikes! Martin, a skilled descender, is flying down the mountain.
Km 137, 33 km to go: The Tour's computers calculate Martin will arrive at the finish about a minute and a half ahead of the Rolland/Gallopin group. He is currently about three minutes ahead of them. The peloton is more than eight minutes behind Martin. With the finish well after the final climb, it looks like the GC men have sheathed their broadswords for the day.
Romain Bardet, 7th place in the overall, has had a problem and is being paced back up to the pack by a couple of his Ag2r teammates.
Km 149: Tony Gallopin has left the chase group. He has been joined by Ag2r rider Chérel. They are 3 minutes behind Martin. Gallopin is pounding away at a giant gear. If he goes fast enough, he'll be in yellow in Mulhouse. He has to finish 3min 28sec ahead of Nibali to make that dream come true. He's got more than 5 minutes right now.
Km 154: Egoitz Garcia (Cofidis) has abandoned. Gallopin and Chérel are three minutes behind a beautifully riding Tony Martin. Martin is doing an awesome ride. If Gallopin pulls off his coup, he'll be a Frenchman in yellow on Bastille Day (July 14).
Km 159, 12km to go: The situation, Tony Martin in front, then Gallopin/Chérel @ 3min 4sec.
The pair has just been caught by the Rolland group. These 19 riders are 5min 1sec ahead of the peloton. Gallopin should be in yellow tonight.
Fabian Cancellara is joining in the effort to pull the Gallopin/Rolland group. Next, Rolland took such a hard pull the others couldn't hold his wheel. He looks back, irritated with the others.
6 km to go: Martin still has 3min 9sec over the hard-charging Rolland/Gallopin group. Martin, Rolland and Gallopin are burying themselves. Others in the group, knowing that they will enjoy a huge time gain, are joining in the work.
2 km to go: Martin is still driving a giant gear and his shoulders are still steady. Perfect form.
Under the Red Kite: Martin looks back, smiles. He's done it! What a beautiful win.
The finish: Tony Martin wins stage nine after being away for 150 kilometers, and riding alone for 59 kilometers.
Cyril Gautier drives the Gallopin/Rolland group hard for his teammate Rolland. It looks like Fabian Cancellara was second @ 2min44sec. Greg van Avermaet was third.
The peloton comes in at 7min 46sec. That makes Tony Gallopin the yellow jersey.
