Major ascents:

The Race: The big news, Alberto Contador has crashed out of the 2014 Tour de France.

The day's break went early and had lots of firepower from strong, non GC threats. But things changed when Tony Martin took Michal Kwiatkowski with him while descending the Col du Firstplan and dragged his highly placed teammate up to the break. That could not be ignored. Over the hilly course the break dropped riders and slowly lost its lead.

On the final ascent, the Planche des Belles Filles, It was just Joaquin Rodriguez and Kwiatkowski. Further back race leader Tony Gallopin was struggling.

Kwiatkowski cracked and Rodriguez pressed on. But Vincenzo Nibali and his Astana squad had been closing in all the time and near the summit Nibali passed Rodriguez to take the stage and the yellow jersey. Rodriguez did get the polka-dot jersey for his trouble.

Stage 10 live updates:

Weather at Mulhouse, France, 1:05 PM local time: 22c (71F), mostly cloudy with nearby locations reporting rain. Wind from the west-southwest @ 13 km/hr (7 mph), humidity is 62%. Over the last 24 hours it has rained 24.1mm (.96 inch).

Km 0: The peloton is riding through the neutral zone with Tony Gallopin the first Frenchman in yellow since Thomas Voeckler spent 10 days leading the Tour in 2011. Gallopin said, "It's incredible and indescribable. This is going to be a great Bastille Day. I would have preferred an easier stage to defend the lead but I hope the Maillot Jaune will boost me. I'm realistic. I only have 1 minute 34 second lead over Nibali, it's not much in a stage like this but I will fight at 200%."

This will be a very difficult stage with seven categorized climbs and Gallopin went deep yesterday.

Km 1: We've had the départ réel. From the gun the speed is high and break attempts are already starting. Every Frenchman will want to win today, July 14 (Fête nationale), what the English speaking world calls Bastille Day.

Km 5: We've got a break of seven containing four Frenchmen, Thomas Voeckler is among them. Peter Sagan is trying to get across. Joaquin Rodriguez and Jan Barta are on his wheel. The seven, who have a 20-second lead, are: Giovanni Visconti (Movistar), Lieuwe Westra (Astana), Christophe Riblon (AG2R), Amaël Moinard (BMC), Thomas Voeckler (Europcar), Markel Irizar (Trek) and Arnaud Gérard (Bretagne). Westra was the initial animator of the break.

It's raining on the riders and pouring at the finish.

Km 11: The riders in the break are working well together and they are flat-out hauling! They are 35 seconds ahead of Sagan's trio and 1min 30sec in front of the peloton. Jan Barta is sitting on and not helping Rodriguez and Sagan bridge up to the seven riders up the road.

Km 15: Just a few kilometers before the first climb, Col du Firstplan. The good climbers are packing a 36 x 29 gear for the day's hard climbing. Sagan and Rodriguez are not closing the gap, they are at 41 seconds behind the seven breakways, who are now 3min 12sec ahead of the pack.

Km 21: Lotto-Belisol is leading the peloton. Jerome Pineau is trying to get from the peloton up to the break. With the current high speeds I think his solo effort has zero percent chance of making it. Sagan and Rodriguez (with Barta just punching tickets behind them) are now 54 seconds behind the fast-moving seven, then Pineau at 3 minutes. The pack is now 4min 6sec behind the break of seven.

Km 23: The break is on the second-category Col du Firstplan. Lotto-Belisol leads the pack, working to defend Tony Gallopin's lead. It's pouring rain now. Sagan and Rodriguez have closed the gap a bit. They are 36 seconds behind.

Km 25: Joaquin Rodriguez is pulling his trio up to the break. They are just a few meters behind now. They've done it. The break of seven is now 10. Pineau is still trying to get up to the break, but he's four minutes behind.

Km 28: IAM Cycling has gone to the front to bring back the break. They don't have a rider in the escape (IAM's Jerome Pineau has given up his attempt to get up to the break) so Sylvain Chavanel is pulling the pack through the pouring rain.

Km 32: Thomas Voeckler took the KOM sprint from Rodriguez, Sagan was third. Now the riders have a descent on a narrow, wet mountain road. Sagan, a good bike handler, has gone clear. In the peloton, riders are getting dropped.

The intermediate sprint is at the bottom of the hill and Sagan is looking like he'll get it. The pack is nailing back the break, the gap is only 2min 31sec.

Km 39: Holy mackerel! Tony Martin descended the Firstplan really fast and brought Omega Pharma teammate Michal Kwiatkowski and a couple of other riders with him. Sagan won the intermediate sprint and has sat up to wait for the break.

Km 46: The race is on the second climb of the day, the first category Petit Ballon. Lotto-Belisol leads the peloton, which is 2min 41sec behind the break. The Martin/Kwiatkowski chase of five riders (with Reto Hollenstein, Danilo Wyss and Rein Taaramae) is in the middle, 1min 30sec behind the front riders.

In the break, Sagan, Barta and Arnaud Gerard have been dropped.

Km 48, midway up the Petit Ballon: Lieuwe Westra and Voeckler have left the other riders in the break behind. Rodriguez scrambled up to the pair as has Amaël Moinard.

Ted King (Cannodale) has abandoned. He was the Lanterne Rouge, 1hr 34min behind in the GC.

Km 51: Giovanni Visconti has made it up to the front four riders (Westra, Moinard, Vockler and Rodriguez). The Martin/Kwiatkowski group is 1min 22sec behind.

Christophe Riblon has bridged up to the front riders, now it's six. André Greipel is leading the peloton up the mountain, working for teammate Gallopin.

Km 54: The Martin group has caught Peter Sagan and Markel Irizar near the top of the climb.

Rodriguez sprinted hard for the top of the Petit Ballon with Voeckler digging deep, trying to catch him. Voeckler can't and Rodriguez takes the climb and the 10 KOM points in play. Voeckler takes the lead on the descent.

Km 64, 98 km to go: All the breakaway riders have come together. Martin has brought Michal Kwiatkowski up to the regrouped Voeckler/Rodriguez group. They are 13 riders strong. With the break 4min 26sec ahead of the peloton, Kwiatkowski (down 2min 26sec) is the virtual yellow jersey now.

Tiago Machado (NetApp-Endura), who was third in GC has crashed and abandonded. Now it is announced he has re-started.

Contador has crashed and he looks very roughed up. The doctor is examining him.

New bike for Contador. He's telling the doctor to hurry up as he gets bandaged. No panic as he adjusts his shoes. He mounts his bike. He's at least four minutes behind the peloton.

Km 67: Word is that Contador's frame snapped. Bjarne Riis looks at him from the team car and looks glum. They are climbing the Col du Platzerwasel.

Tinkoff-Saxo has sent lots of riders back to pace Contador back up.

So: The break of 13 riders, then the peloton with yellow jersey at 4min 42sec and the Contador group 3min 45sec behind the peloton.

Km 71: It looks like Tony Martin is doing all the work of leading his break up the Platzerwasel. The peloton can't be courteous, even if it were so inclined, and wait for Contador with Kwiatkowski off the front.

The Tour reports that Contador has Nicolas Roche, Michael Morkov, Daniele Bennati and Matteo Tosatto to help him regain the peloton. They've gotton a minute closer to the pack already.

NetApp Endura has brought Tiago Machado up to the peloton and next to yellow jersey Gallopin. Gallopin is unable to ride at the front of his group. Not surprising after the work he did yesterday.

Rodriguez jumped for the KOM sprint and Voeckler looked like he was ready for him. But Joaquin Rodriguez can be unbeatable in these uphill sprints and this was no exception. Rodriguez easily outdistanced Voecker to take the Platzerwasel points.

Km 76: Contador is over the summit of the Plazterwasel, four minutes behind the Gallopin group. Contador, who struggled up the climb after his crash, is going to have to have to blitz the descent

Km 79: Astana leads the peloton through thick fog on the descent. They have to catch Kwiatkowski, which is horrible for Contador.

Contador is losing ground. He's 4min 40sec behind now.

Alberto Contador is abandoning. He climbs into the team car. His Tour de France is over.

Km 96: The Martin/Kwiatkowski/Rodriguez group is 4min 15sec ahead of the peloton with race leader Gallopin. Astana continues to drive the peloton, working to nail back Kwiatkowski.

Km 98: The riders are on the second category Col d'Oderen. The race is completely changed. Instead of a Contador/Nibali shootout today, Astana has to worry about Kwiatkowski being dragged up the road by the finest living time trialist, Tony Martin. Astana remains at the peloton's front. Has Astana worked too hard the first week? They still have two more weeks of racing.

Km 101: The lead group is down to nine: Visconti (Movistar), Rodriguez (Katusha), Kwiatkowski and Martin (OPQS), Riblon (AG2R), Taaramäe (Cofidis), Wyss (IAM), Voeckler (Europcar) and Moinard (BMC) Jan Barta and Lieuwe Westra are back in the peloton. Astana probably needs Westra's strong legs to help with the chase.

Lotto-Belisol has thown in Adam Hansen to help with the chase.

Bam! Up at the front, Rodriguez jumps, with Voeckler on his wheel. Rodriquez easily takes the Col d'Oderen KOM.

Km 110: The peloton went over the Oderon 4min 35sec behind the break. Tony Martin is doing an incredible amount of work leading the break. The peloton isn't putting a dent in his lead. Under pressure from Astana's effort, the peloton is lined out.

Km 127: On the third category Col des Croix. The break is 2min 39sec ahead of the peloton. Rodriguez takes the two KOM points in front of Vockler. Astana looks to be running out of gas. Riders are being dropped with two more climbs to go.

Km 132: Tony Martin is still pulling the break, which is 2min 45sec ahead of the pack. There is some struggle in the peloton for position before the Col des Chevrèes which is very steep at the end, a patch of 18% gradient.

Km 138: Team Sky is at the front of the peloton. They must have plans for Richie Porte. Lotto-Belisol is bringing Gallopin up to the front. Rui Costa is also there. The break still has 2min 24sec.

Km 140: The break is on the day's penultimate climb, the first category Col des Chevrèes. On the initial 8% section Martin has to give up. He comes to a near stop. Kwiatkowski takes over the break's lead. Cancellara is leading the pack for Frank Schleck.

20 km to go: Astana at the front of the pack. The front break is shattered, Kwiatkowski, Rodriguez and Visconti remain. Martin had gone deep. He's zig-zagging to get up the mountain.

Gallopin and Andrew Talansky are being slightly distanced.

The front break is just Rodriguez and Kwiatkowski, Visconti has been dropped. Visconti makes it back to Kwiatkowski and passed him.

Km 142, 19 km to go, 1 km from the summit: Kwiatkowski can't hold Rodriguez' wheel. Rodriguez goes over the Chevrèes first.

Gallopin is well dropped. Nibali is riding in second place in the peloton, on the wheel of a teammate, I think Michele Scarponi.

Km 145: Rodriguez is flying down the mountain. The Nibali group is 1min 33sec behind Rodriguez. Astana rider Michele Scarponi crashed into hay bales on a corner. Nibali has just Jakob Fuglsang for help.

In the break, Kwiatkowski, Moinard and Visconti have made it up to Rodriguez.

And now Kwiatkowski has gone clear on the descent, riding down the wet road at 75 km/hr. Yellow jersey Gallopin is a minute and a half behind the Nibali group.

Km 153, 8 km to go: We're coming to the final ascent, the Le Planche des Belles Filles. Rodriguez has made it back up to Kwiatkowski.

Scarponi is making his way through the peloton, trying to get back up to his team leader, Vincenzo Nibali. Thomas Voeckler, who has spent most of the day off the front, has been caught by the peloton.

Gallopin has clawed his way back to the back of the pack.

6 km to go: The final ascent has started. The Nibali group is 1min 36sec behind Kwiatkoski/Rodriguez. Rodriguez takes off, leaving Kwiatkowski to fend for himself.

4 km to go: This is steep. Even a gifted climber like Rodriguez is having trouble. Kwiatkoski is just 28 seconds behind him. Visconti has been caught by the Nibali group.

2.5 km to go: Bam! Nibali attacks. He goes right by Kwiatkowski, who has cracked, and is hunting Rodriguez. Richie Porte cannot respond.

1.4 km to go: Nibali is catching Rodriguez. He's done it. Rodriguez gloms onto Nibali's wheel. Porte pulls the chasers with Van Garderen and Valverde behind him.

1 km to go: Nibali has dropped Rodriguez and is heading to the stage win and the yellow jersey. Rodrigeuz has been passed by the other riders.

The finish: Nibali has won his second stage. Looks like Thibaut Pinot was second.
