Rated ascents:

The Race: It took a while for the day's break to go clear. Martin Elmiger (IAM), Cyril Lemoine (Cofidis) and Anthony Delaplace (Bretagne-Séché Environnement) escaped after about 33 kilometers of racing. Their gap eventually grew to over six minutes. After about a hundred kilometers into the stage, Cannondale and Orica-GreenEdge started bringing the escapees back.

As the lumpy second-half of the stage was reached, Andrew Talansky got into trouble. At one point, clearly suffering from agonizing pain in his back after two crashes in earlier stages, he dismounted and had a long talk with staff in the team car. He got back on his bike and eventually finished more than a half hour down, but within the time limit. He can start tomorrow.

Nicolas Roche made a bid to join the break, but Omega Pharma's Tony Martin chased everyone down. Martin's high-speed descending caused a split in the pack.

Late in the stage on an unrated climb Tony Gallopin took off with Michael Rogers, Michal Kwiatkowski and Peter Sagan for company. The quartet formed a working break. Gallopin tired to get away and was brought back. Undaunted, he went again.

The other three looked at each other for just those few, crucial seconds. Too late. Gallopin had bolted and was hustling for the finish. The other three were quickly reeled in.

Gallopin had just enough of a gap to take his hands off the bars to salute the crowd. Nice ride.

The top of the GC ranks remained unchanged except that Rui Costa was on the wrong side of the peloton split and dropped out of the top 10.

Stage 11 live updates:

Weather at Besançon, 12:45 PM local time: 25c (77F), wind from the north at 10 km/hr (6 mph), sunny with a forecast to warm to 27C (81F). Humidity 46%. Sounds like a nice day for a bicycle race.

Km 8: 179 riders started today. Fabian Cancellara withdrew yesterday to prepare for the world championships this fall.

A break of four riders - Jérémy Roy (FDJ), Gregory Rast (Trek) and Jérôme Pineau (IAM), Dries Devenyns (Giant) - attempted to make a break of it, but the move was quickly snuffed.

Km 20: The peloton isn't being very generous so far. Adam Hansen, Sylvain Chavanel and Peter Sagan have each tried to escape solo and all were brought back. Average speed so far has been a speedy 51.6 k/hr.

Monday's stage turned everything upside down. Only Peter Sagan kept his classification leadership. Vincenzo Nibali became the new yellow jersey, Joaquin Rodriguez has the polka-dots, Romain Bardet is the best young rider and Ag2r took over the team classification.

Km 34: We may have our break: Martin Elmiger (IAM), Cyril Lemoine (Cofidis) and Anthony Delaplace (Bretagne-Séché Environnement). The trio is 1min 10sec ahead of the peloton.

And what is Tinkoff-Saxo going to do now that both Alberto Contador and Jesus Hernandez have crashed out? The team still has a lot of horsepower in Michael Rogers, Nicolas Roche, Sergio Paulinho, Daniele Bennati, Michael Morkov and Rafal Majka. None are riders who can have realistic ambitions for wearing yellow in Paris, but there are lots of other way a team can make an impact. Michael Morkov explained, “It totally changes our way of racing. It's a new race for us. We'll try and go for stage wins, myself included. We have a lot of guys in the team who are fresh and ready to attack. Today it's probably a good day for breakaways. The last part of the stage is hard. It's a question of getting into the right group.”

Km 40: This is the break that will go. The gap has gone out to 2min 30sec.

Km 50: Hokey Smoke Bullwinkle! The trio of Martin Elmiger (IAM), Cyril Lemoine (Cofidis) and Anthony Delaplace (Bretagne-Séché Environnement) is now riding 6min 10sec ahead of the pack.

Km 65: Enough of that! Cannondale and Orica-GreenEdge have strung out the peloton and reduced the trio's lead to five minutes. Astana rides massed near the front. Andrew Talansky, who has had such a rough start to this year's Tour rides at the back.

Km 75: Cannondale, led by Elia Viviani is leading the pack. The gap is down to 4min 40sec. As the peloton roared through Montrond a speed check sign showed 55 km/hr.

Km 92: Cyril Lemoine was the first of the break riders to cross the intermediate sprint line. André Greipel was fourth, followed by Marcel Kittel. Peter Sagan did not contest the sprint and crossed in 11th place. The break's lead is 4min 4sec.

Km 100, 87.5 km to go: The riders have gone through the feed zone and some have stopped to relieve themselves before the road starts getting lumpy. There will be four categorized ascents in the final 40 kilometers. The gap has gone back out to 4min 32sec. Cannondale, Orica-GreenEdge, FDJ and Astana are at the front.

Km 106: Oh no! Andrew Talansky is coming off. He's had a flat tire then stopped to take a "natural break", but can't go the speed of the pack and continues to lose ground. His team, Garmin-Sharp, has so far not sent any riders back to help him regain the field. He's on his own and the pack works to chase down the break that is 3min 36sec up the road.

Km 114: Talansky is 1min 20sec behind the peloton. Still no help sent back to him. Talansky is not only suffering from two crashes, he went deep when he won the Dauphiné a few weeks ago. Riders who win the Dauphiné regularly have trouble in the Tour. Lance Armstrong regretted his winning the Dauphiné in 2003, saying he should have let Iban Mayo win the damn race.

Km 126: The break is descending 2min 55sec ahead of the field before the start of the first categorized climb, the third-category Côte de Rogna. Talansky is more than three minutes behind the peloton.

Km 132: Garmin-Sharp is at the front, chasing. Talansky is obviously being written off. The break's - Martin Elmiger (IAM), Cyril Lemoine (Cofidis) and Anthony Delaplace (Bretagne-Séché Environnement) - gap is down to 2min 34sec.

Km 135: On the Côte de Rogna, lots of riders are being dropped as Garmin-Sharp taps out a serious pace. Anthony Delaplace has been dropped from the break. Talansky will probably have to limit his time loss today to about 25 minutes to avoid being eliminated. He's about eight minutes behind now.

Talansky is off his bike, clearly suffering from serious back pain. He's talking to team staff by the side of the road. Looks to me like he's abandoning.

Km 144: Talansky got back on his bike. Martin Elmiger was first over the Rogna, Lemoine was dropped and has been absorbed by the field. Nicolas Roche and Jan Bakelants are now trying to chase down Elmiger. The pair are a half-minute behind Elmiger and another half-minute in front of the peloton. They are on the third-category Côte de Choux with its 11% patch of gradient.

Km 150: Elmiger is first over the Côte de Choux with Roche and Bakelants just 10 seconds back. The pack is just 40 seconds behind Elmiger. Talansky is 17 minutes back.

The chasing pair have caught Elmiger. Jesus Herrada and Cyril Gautier have set off and are pursuing the lead trio. They are on the fourth-category Côte de Désertin. Herrada and Gautier have the lead trio in sight. The pack is just a half-minute back.

Km 152: The catch has been made. Now there are five off the front: Gautier (Europcar), Herrada (Movistar), Elmiger (IAM), Roche (Tinkoff) and Bakelants (OPQS). The pack chases at 32 seconds. Over the top, the break riders did not contest the KOM points as Elmiger led them over.

Cannondale led the pack over a half-minute later. Simon Gerrans, who has voiced ambitions for a stage win today, is near the front.

Km 168: Roche has taken off and the other escapees have been reeled in. Roche crests the third category Côte d'Échallon with just nine second's lead over the peloton. Michele Scarponi and José Serpa crashed, but both look to be back up.

The descent is very technical, which will play to Roche's advantage.

Nope. Tony Martin has dragged the field up to Roche. Martin leads with Nibali near the front. Looks like a small gap has formed because of Martin's pressure.

Km 174: Tony Gallopin is trying to get away on the descent. It looks like the peloton has come back together. Nope, there is still a split.

10 km to go: Sagan, Nibali are at the front. Sagan leads. Gallopin still has about 10 seconds. The riders are flying crazy-fast down the road. They are going 70 km/hr.

5 km to go: Tinkoff-Saxo's Michael Rogers leads the peloton. Gallopin has just a few seconds lead. Gallopin has been caught by Sagan, Rogers and Kwiatkowski. The quartet have formed a working break.

2.5 km to go: Gallopin goes again. He's got a gap that he might keep to the end.

Under the red kite: Gallopin looks back. He's got it! The Sagan group has been caught.

The finish: Gallopin has time to take both hands off the bars to salute the corwd. Just a few feet behind John Degenkold looks to have won the field sprint with a fantastic jump, coming from way back.
