Rated ascent:

The Race: What a wet, miserable day!

Before the rainy day was even twenty kilometers old, five riders had established themselves as the working break: Rein Taaramäe (Cofidis), Cyril Gautier (Europcar), Martin Elmiger (IAM), Arnaud Gérard (Bretagne) and Tom-Jelte Slagter (Garmin). None were GC threats, but the break was never allowed to gain even a four-minute lead.

As the race closed in on the day's only categorized climb, the Côte de Monbazillac, the steam was coming out of the break. Tom-Jelte Slagter, in what turned out to be a planned set-piece, left the break. Then, on the ascent Ramunas Navardauskas blasted away from the field, bridged up to teammate Slagter and then kept right on going. It looked for a while as if he were going to be caught, but misfortune did not strike Navardauskas the way it did teammate Jack Bauer a few days ago. Navardauskas drove across the line with seven seconds in hand for a lovely stage win.

His chances were improved because of a big fall at the front of the peloton, ruining Peter Sagan's chances. Because the crash occurred with less than three kilometers to go, there was no change to the GC.

Vincenzo Nibali finished safely and need only ride a decent time trial and stay upright Sunday to win the 2014 Tour de Frace.

Stage 19 live updates:

Weather at Bergerac at 12:45 PM: Light rain with thunder, nearby locations reporting thunderstorms. 17C (63F), wind from the south at 21 km/hr (13 mph), gusting to 40 km/hr (25 mph). 43.4mm (1.71 inches) of rain in the last 24 hours. Humidity 94%

Forecast is for 27C (80F), sun and clouds mixed, wind from the west-southwest at 11 km/hr (7mph), 20% chance of rain.

Km 0: 164 riders started the stage at 12:22 PM. Peter Sagan has the points classification mathematically locked up, his lead of 155 points is greater than the 150 points that are available between now and Paris.

Rafal Majka has nailed down the Mountain Classification. He is thirteen points ahead of Vincenzo Nibali and there are only two points in play before the end of the Tour.

Km 19, 189 km to go: There is already a working break of five riders two minutes ahead of the field: Rein Taaramäe (Cofidis), Cyril Gautier (Europcar), Martin Elmiger (IAM), Arnaud Gérard (Bretagne) and Tom-Jelte Slagter (Garmin).

Km 30: 37 minutes into the stage the group of five has a lead of 2min 35sec. Cyril Gautier is the best-placed of the breakaways at 57min 15sec.They have been averaging 48.2 km/hr. Giant-Shimano and Cannondale are leading the field.

Km 53: Cannondale leads the pack which is riding under a downpour, 3 minutes behind the five-man break.

Km 78: The sun is peeking out from behind the clouds, but the roads are wet and the follow cars have their wipers working. Right now the five breakaways are 2min 40sec up the road. Average speed has been 42.6 km/hr.

Km 91: Lars Ytting Bak is bossing the peloton's chase. The last man in the GC, Giant-Shimano's Cheng Ji, is leading the pack, 2min 8sec behind the break.

Km 105: Luca Paolini (Katusha) leads the field (which is being pushed by a tail wind) through the feed zone. The break is still 2min 15sec ahead of the pack.

Km 114, 94 km to go: The gap remains steady, at 2min 22sec.

Km 122: Over the last ten minutes Cannondale has done 77% of the peloton's pacemaking. Marcel Kittel has a flat tire, which is being repaired in good order. Under grey skies the break of five still have 2min 10sec. It has been a speedy day of racing. The average speed has been 43.8 km/hr. Lots of flat tires. With the wet roads, debris can stick to the tires.

Km 131: Martin Elmiger leads the break over the intermediate sprint line at Tonneins, followed by Rein Taaramäe and Arnaud Gérard. The riders do not contest the sprint. Peter Sagan was seventh.

Km 148, 60 km to go: The gap had gone down to 1min 40sec, but it is back out to 2min 40sec.

Km 160: What an awful day. The riders are again under a downpour. The five brreakaway riders, Cyril Gautier (Europcar), Martin Elmiger (IAM), Arnaud Gérard (Bretagne), Tom-Jelte Slagter (Garmin) and Rein Taaramäe (Cofidis), are 2min 2sec ahead of the field. Thomas Voeckler has had a puncture repaired and is chasing through the cars.

Km 165: The break riders have lifted their pace, as has the peloton's chase. Everyone is looking tired as they ride under dark skies. The stage's average speed has been a quick 43.9 km/hr. The break's gap is 1min 50sec. The road is going to get lumpy as it approaches the day's only categorized ascent, the fourth-category Côte de Monbazillac.

The peloton is stringing out under the pressure of the chase.

Km 174: The road is rising and falling now as the Tour enters the Dordogne province. the break's gap has fallen to 1min 22sec. Lotto-Belisol is doing the lion's share of the chasing, surely setting things up for André Greipel.

Km 177, 31 km to go: With the escape's gap down to 68 seconds, Tom Jelte Slagter has attacked the break and quickly has a sizable gap. Katusha has joined Lotto-Belisol in the chase.

Km 186, 22 km to go: Slagter is 25 seconds ahead of the break, which is now down to three riders, and 45 seconds in front of the pack. Arnaud Gérard has given up and returned to the peloton.

Km 187: The peloton has caught the three breakaway riders. Only Tom Jelte Slagter is off the front, 35 seconds up the road.

Bam! Jan Bakelants (Omega Pharma) attacked the pack, but he's not getting much of a gap and he's caught.

Km 194, 14 km to go: Slagter is in sight, 20 seconds up the road as the day's only climb, Côte de Monbazillac, is attacked. Marcel Kittel has been dropped, so Giant-Shimano is probably going to ride for John Degenkolb instead.

Ramunas Navardauskas has joined his teammate Slagter. Peter Sagan is in hot pursuit.

Slagter has been caught but Navardauskas is pressing on.The peloton has been split. I don't see André Greipel in the front chase group.

10 km to go: Navardauskas has 13 seconds.

7.7 km to go: Pouring rain, Navardauskas is 24 seconds ahead.

6 km to go: Greipel is in the front chase group. Tinkoff-Saxo has four riders at the front of the chase for Daniele Bennati. 22 seconds

3 km to go: 21 seconds

Big crash with Peter Sagan, Romain Bardet and Frank Schleck. Inside 3 km, so no effect on GC.

2 km to go: Navardauskas has 14 seconds.

Under the red kite: Navadauskas is being chased by a small group, reduced by the crash.

The finish: Navardauskas is not going to be another Jack Bauer. He crosses the line alone and salutes the crowd.
