Categorized ascent:

Km 31: Côte de Briis-sous-Forges - category 4

The Race: The stage started with a leisurely ride to Paris with the usual champagne toasts. But once the peloton hit the Champs Elysées, it was, "Katy, bar the door!" Sylvain Chavanel blasted off at the first possible moment and from there on the speed was high and the aggression unrelenting.

There was a scare when Jean-Christophe Péraud flatted and had to chase the fast-moving peloton, endangering his second place. But Péraud is a capable time trialist and was quickly back in the peloton. Nibali had signalled to the field that they should ease-up for a moment to let the Frenchman catch on.

The sprinters' teams tried to get the their lead-outs organized, but the speed was high and the attacks seemed to prevent most teams getting a good set-up. It came down to Alexander Kristoff getting the best jump, but Marcel Kittel came up next to him. Then, Kittel just started to go faster than Kristoff could, probably because Kristoff had flatted earlier and been forced to mount a chase.

Kristoff won the stage, giving Germany seven stage wins this year, and Kittel wins in both the first and last stages, a feat he had accomplished last year as well.

Vincenzo Nibali finished safely in the field to win the 2014 Tour de France, an accomplishment for which there should be no apology. If his competitors could not finish the race, the failing is theirs, not his. They all started in good order. That's why winning the Tour de France is a big deal. It's really hard to do.

Stage 21 Live Updates:

Weather at Paris, France at 6:05 AM PDT, 3:05 PM, local time: 28C (82F), Sunny, wind from the west-southwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph), 10% chance of rain. Humidity is 39%

6:17 AM PDT, 3:17 PM local time: The riders are lining up at Evry to start the stage. Vincenzo Nibali is wearing a complete yellow kit for the first time. Looks like Nibali is helping Peter Sagan with his radio wiring.

6:20 AM PDT, 3:20 PM local time: They're off. The Tour's final stage has begun, though they are in the neutralized portion right now. The four jersey holders (Nibali, Sagan, Pinot and Majka) are riding slowly at the front.

6:52 AM, PDT, 3:52 local time: Still in the neutralized section. Nibali is getting champagne.

Okay, we're at Km 0, départ réel. They will still take it easy for a while.

Km 7.6, 129.3 km to go: Still a ceremonial, celebratory ride towards Paris. Blel Kadri stopped by the side of the road to greet some friends. Will this be the day Peter Sagan finally wins a stage? Marcel Kittel put on his gloves and looks as if he will do his best to maintain Sagan's dry spell. André Greipel is talking with his director. Surely the Gorilla is ambitious as well?

Km 16: Astana is enjoying its moment. They've earned it. The team is larking at the front with Nibali. They have averaged a speedy 30.7 km/hr so far during the stage's first 32 minutes.

Km 30, 108 km to go, 7:48 AM PDT: We're coming to the only categorized climb of the day, the Côte de Briis-sous-Forges. There is no urgency to the peloton. So far they've averaged 32.5 km/hr. Six Astana riders are led up the hill at a leisurely pace. Dimitri Gruzdev took the only KOM point in play for the day.

Km 43: Still four Astana riders at the front with attentive Lotto-Belisol riders right behind. The speed is slowly increasing. After 1hr 17min the average is 33.4 km/hr

Km 57, 80 km to go: We're 1hr 38min into the stage and riding into Antony. Astana leads with Cofidis at the back. Average speed is still creeping up, it's now 34.8 km/hr.

Km 67, 71 km to go: It looks like the peloton is getting ready to race. The riders are getting their bottles replaced, the teams are getting organized. In about 14 km the riders will hit the Champs Elysées for eight spectacular circuits. Alexander Kristoff has announced his intention to try to win the stage.

Km 74, 63 km to go: Marcel Kittel is being paced back up to the peloton by teammate Roy Curvers and they ride up the Seine by the Eiffel Tower.

Km 82, 55 to go: Time to race! The peloton is on the circuit.

Bam! Sylvain Chavanel goes on the attack as the skies get dark with the threat of rain.

Km 86: Chavanel has 8 seconds. He's caught. The riders are flying. The peloton, led by Lampre, Astana and Orica, is lined out from the high speed.

Km 88: Of course, Jens Voigt is off the front as the race goes down the Rue de Rivoli. There goes Chris Horner after him. Now we've got the two oldest riders in the race on the attack.

Horner has been reeled in, but Voigt persists and takes the last intermediate sprint.

Km 93: Well, this looks interesting. Svein Tuft and Greg van Avermaet have bridged up to Voigt. That's a lot of horsepower.

Heck, Jean-Christophe Péraud was part of a creash that also took down Martin ELmiger. The peloton is flying and Péraud will have a hard chase. He must bridge or lose his second place in the GC.

Several more riders have bridged up to the Voigt group.

Km 97: Péraud has several teammates pacing him back up to the field. He's got a 30-second gap to close. Nibali is trying to get the front of the race to slow to let Péraud get back on. Péraud still has 22 seconds to close.

Km 99: Péraud has made contact with the peloton. He should be OK.

Km 101, 36 km to go: A break has gone clear: Richie Porte, Armindo Fonseca, Michael Morkov and José Serpa. The quartet has 18 seconds. Giant-Shimano has gone to the front to bring back the fleeing riders. Lotto is also at the front.

Jean-Christophe Péraud is looking scuffed and rattled after his crash and chase.

Km 105, 33 km to go: The breakaway is organized and working well. They have extended their lead to 24 seconds.

Katusha rider Alexander Kristoff has punctured. He got a quick wheel change, but he still has to chase, which might take some of the snap out of those powerful legs.

Km 110: With four laps to go, 110 km ridden: The Porte/Morkov break has just 16 seconds. Kristoff has rejoined the peloton.

Armindo Fonseca has been dropped by the break.

Km 114, 23 km to go: Svein Tuft is back in the pack. Morkov, Serpa and Porte still have thirteen seconds.

Km 117, three laps to go: The trio has pushed out their lead to 23 seconds.

Km 121: The Porte trio has 18 seconds with 15.5 km to go. Tony Martin has flatted and is chasing.

Km 125, 13 km (2 laps) to go: Ritchie Porte has left the break and gone solo. He has 13 seconds. Serpa and Morkov have been caught by the peloton. Tony Martin had to do another bike change and then rode right up to the back of the peloton. Giant-Shimano, Lotto-Belisol and Cannondale lead the pack.

Raindrops have begun to fall.

Km 127: Tony Martin has gone to the front to help with the chase. Richie Porte's gap is seven seconds.

Km 130: Richie Porte has been caught. Alexander Kristoff's leadout man Luca Paolini has flatted. Bell lap. No rain right now.

The sprinters' leadout trains are getting organized at the front.

Km 133: Simon Clarke (Orica) has tried a flier.

Giant-Shimano's efforts have caught Clarke.

Under the red kite: Giant-Shimano and Omega Pharma are at the front. The trains are coming apart. Sagan is trying to use the other teams. This is chaos.

Kristoff and Kittel had a huge drag race and Marcel Kittel took the final stage.

Vincenzo Nibali finished safely to win the 2014 Tour de France.
