BMC turning in their stage-winning ride
Rated ascent:

The Race: Before the team time trial began, LeTour summed up stage 9 thus: “This stage is unique in the history of cycling. Usually a team time trial is contested in the first third of a Grand Tour but eight stages have already taken their toll. Orica-GreenEdge, the last squad to have won the TTT at the Tour de France two years ago, is three riders down due to the abandons of Simon Gerrans, Daryl Impey and Michael Albasini after crashing. Vannes to Plumelec is also an atypical course as it's lumpy with an uphill finish in a famous cycling heartland.
“Mûr de Bretagne stage winner Alexis Vuillermoz claimed the GP Plumelec one and half months ago. Plumelec is also the place where Alejandro Valverde took stage 1 in the 2008 Tour de France in which Chris Froome and Vincenzo Nibali were making their debut at the Grande Boucle. The three of them are under stress ahead of this 28-km long stage set to be decisive for the overall classification, as Chris Froome stated after stage 8. Their respective teams, Movistar, Sky and Astana, are potential winners, so are Tinkoff-Saxo and BMC. It won't be just physical but a tactical affair as well in terms of using the different riders' power smartly in the first part of the race and saving some energy for the conclusive hill where the fifth rider's time will count for the rankings.
“Sky team director had this to say before the start, ‘It's true that it's a different ball game with two contenders in this TTT weakened. Etixx-Quick Step without Tony Martin is not the same thing and Orica-GreenEdge have only six riders left, one of them injured. Moreover a week of the Tour levels the chances. I think that with Richie Porte, Geraint Thomas, Ian Stannard and Chris [Porte], we have the riders for this kind of effort for which we have worked hard. It didn't show in the Dauphiné but I'm confident we can do very well in this time trial and even win it.’”
The stage started at 3PM, with the twenty-one teams departing every five minutes. Sky, the team of race leader Christopher Froome was scheduled to start last, as is cycling’s tradition. Orica-GreenEdge was the first team to ride.
Each team’s time was taken as the fifth rider crossed the finish line.
Orica-GreenEdge turned in a slow ride, averaging 49.4 km/hr. I know that’s fast, but for a professional team time trial, it’s well below what is possible. Since the team doesn’t have overall GC ambitions, Michael Matthews said the squad treated the stage as another rest day.
Astana hit the road hard. Nibali, probably thinking of his time loss the day before, took pulls so hard that some of his teammates would lose contact. Despite Nibali’s over-enthusiastic riding, Astana did turn in a good ride, the best so far when they crossed the line. That effort was soon eclipsed by Movistar’s 51.98 km/hr ride that put them a half-minute ahead of Astana.
The crowds along the road were huge. Thomas Voeckler said that at times the available road was only two meters wide.
Then BMC crossed the line. The red-and-black-clad team had scorched the course, steaming along at 52.09 km/hr, the first team to break 52 km/hr. They beat Movistar by 4 seconds. Could Sky do still better? They couldn’t. BMC beat Sky by a single second. A great ride, but not fast enough to yank the yellow jersey from Chris Froome’s shoulders.
Froome remained the overall leader with Tejay van Garderen second at twelve seconds and Greg van Avermaet third, 27 seconds back.
