Ruben Plaza wins stage 16

The Race: Today was a stage more challenging than yesterday's sprinters' fest. There were two second-category climbs facing the riders on the way to Gap, where the stage ended.

Before the racing began, here's how Le Tour saw it:

The sprinters have had their say in Valence, now it's up to the attackers on the way to Gap, where the Tour de France can't be won but can be lost. The downhill of the col de Manse just before the finish in the prefecture of the Hautes-Alpes is a spectacular one.

By experience, Alberto Contador knows how to use this terrain to put his rivals into trouble as he did to Andy Schleck in previous editions. Chris Froome is aware of the danger. He's clearly worried about crashing the day before the rest day. He counts on his team to protect him and lead him safely to the finish. Most probably there'll be two races again, a positive one for the stage win between the attackers who will break away in the first half of the race, and a defensive one in the surroundings of the yellow jersey.

Gap is the often the home of world champions, reigning or not, Thor Hushovd and Rui Costa being the last two winners with the same kind of terrain at their disposal in 2011 and 2013. Michal Kwiatkowski is already kind of the super combative of the Tour this year, having received the red bib on two occasions. He knows what he has to do as the race approaches the Alps with a rest day around the corner before hitting the biggest mountains.

Europcar director Andy Flickinger said this before the stage, "It's a stage favorable to a breakaway, but in this Tour de France, you can never be sure of anything. Actually I see a stage in two parts. In the first, with tailwind, the sprinters teams should be able to maintain a packed bunch until the intermediate sprint. In the second part, a break should take shape and go for victory.

"Of course, our goal will be to go in the break if it is a solid one. We've been seeking victory since the start and we're at stage 16, there aren't that many opportunities left. We have quite a few riders who can do well today like Cyril Gautier, but also Romain Sicard, as the stage profile suits him. Perrig Quemeneur has recovered from his first week and Thomas Voeckler is hopefully better after a bit of flu. Young Angelo Tulik can also do well.

"Afterwards, the end of the Tour is gruelling. There will be a day when Pierre Rolland will need to be present to make a difference. There are two mountain top finishes he has won in the past. The only thing we know for sure is that the course suits him. And if he's in the same form as in the Pyrenees anything is possible."

The race started at 12:43 PM. 170 riders rolled off the line. Belgian ace Greg van Avermaet did not start. He flew home to attend the birth of his first child.

Early on, 29 riders broke at away, and after just five kilometers they were a half-minute up the road. Very quickly, twelve racers left that big group and by the twentieth kilometer were two minutes in front of the peloton: Andriy Grivko (Astana), Christophe Riblon (AG2R), Peter Sagan (Tinkoff Saxo), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), Simon Geschke (Giant-Alpecin), Marco Haller (Katusha), Bob Jungels (Trek), Nelson Oliveira, Ruben Plaza Molina (Lampre-Merida), Daniel Navarro (Cofidis), Pierrick Fedrigo (Bretagne-Séché), Serge Pauwels (MTN-Qhubeka). Again, Peter Sagan had been careful get into the day's move in anticipation of the points to be grabbed in the intermediate sprint.

Twelve of the riders of the original group who missed the front break didn't give up and at km 79, were just a minute behind. The main peloton trailed the leaders by nearly six minutes.

The intermediate sprint came at km 86.5, and unsurprisingly, Peter Sagan won it. Shortly thereafter, the now eleven chasers caught the front twelve and after 115 kilometers of racing, the 23 riders were more than ten minutes ahead of the field.

The break had some true quality riders, including six former stage winners: Thomas Voeckler, Christophe Riblon, Pierrick Fédrigo, Matteo Trentin, Edvald Boasson-Hagen and Peter Sagan. None were GC threat, however. The best-placed rider was Jarlinson Patano, down more than a half-hour on leader Chris Froome.

After climbing the first of the day's big climbs, the Col de Cabre, the pack was still relaxed about the riders up the road. The Sky-led peloton rode thirteen and a half minutes behind the escapees. There was nothing relaxed about Peter Sagan's riding, though. He descended aggressively, opening up a gap. He was caught and then went again.

After Sagan personally went after a three-man attempt to leave the break, Adam Hansen (Lotto-Soudal) went off alone. He was a half-minute up the road with forty kilometers to race while the pack was fifteen minutes behind. Marco Haller (Katusha) quickly went after Hansen and they were soon together and nearly a minute ahead of the break.

The peloton had clearly lost interest in chasing down the twenty-three riders up the road and 28 kilometers from the finish, the gap had grown to eighteen minutes. The pair were caught on the second-category Col de Manse. Quickly, Lampre-Merida rider Ruben Plaza jumped away, chased by Sagan, Riblon, Geschke and Teklehaimanot. Behind, the break came apart as the climb began to bite.

Near the top of the Col de Manse, with just twelve kilometers to go, Plaza was a minute ahead of nine chasers: Sagan, Riblon, De Gendt, Geschke, Voeckler, Jungels, Mate, Pantano and Teklehaimanot.

Sagan, intent upon a stage win after a succession of second places, took off after Plaza on the descent, going down the hill like a madman.

Being crazy wasn't enough. Going under the Flamme Rouge Plaza still had a good gap.

Plaza did it, winning the sixteenth stage in fine style. Sagan came in thirty seconds later, getting his fifth second place this Tour.

Back in the Yellow Jersey group, Vincenzo Nibali attacked on the Col de Manse and crested the mountain thirteen seconds ahead of his chasers, led by Sky. He reached the bottom of the descent with twenty seconds in hand. In the chasing group, Warren Barguil bumped Geraint Thomas, sending Thomas into a telephone pole. Thomas was soon back on his bike, but unable to rejoin the peloton.

Nibali was the best of the rest, with Alberto Contador leading in the rest 28 seconds later. But there was no real change at the top of the overall standings. Chris Froome retained a firm grip on the Yellow Jersey.
